Abstract

Red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is an important commodity and has high economic value in Indonesia. Problems encountered in the cultivation of chili in Indonesia decreased productivity due to pests attack. Aphids (Aphis gossypii) is a major pest that attacks the chili leaves. This research was aimed to determine the effectiveness of ered pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) extract on mortality of aphids; especially  the effective concentration and LC50 of red chili extract on mortality of aphids (Aphis gossypii). This research tested five concentration of chili extract treatments with four replicates each. Third instar of nymphs were fasted for 30 minutes before, then nymphs attached to the chili leaves were trasferred into the petri dish. Each petri dish filled with 10 nymph of Aphis gossypii. Red chili extract of 3%, 5%, 7% and 9% sprayed 3 times on the nymph. Mortality rate was calculated 24 hours after application. The results showed that the extract of red pepper were effective to kill aphids nymphs, the lowest mortality was  35% at a concentration of 3% and the highest one was up to 92.5% at a concentration of 9%. Effective concentration (LC50) extract of red pepper that cause 50% of the mortality of the aphids for 24 hours of testing was  7.46%.

Abstract

Organic matter and inorganic fertilizer application are important to maintain the existence of potential microbes in the rhizosphere and maintain the soil quality. A greenhouse experiment has been carried out to determine the effect of  vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on total bacterial and Azotobacter  population in rhizosphere and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) grown in soil order of  Inceptisols. The experimental design was a factorial randomized complete block design with three replicates were tested three doses of vermicompost (7.5, 15 and 22.5 t ha-1) and four doses of inorganic fertilizers; NPK (300; 450; 600 and 750 kg ha-1). The results showed that there was no significant interaction between vermicompost and NPK fertilizer on either total bacterial or Azotobacter population, as well as on fresh weight of lettuce. Both vermicompost and NPK fertilizer did not affect the biological parameters. However, the application of 750 kg/ha NPK fertilizer can increased lettuce weight up to 24% compared to that of control. This study suggested that in the relatively poor soil nutrients, lettuce growth was depend on inorganic fertilizers.

Abstract

Kakao is one of important estate commodity for the national economy, since kakao plantation provide a significant number of employment which is support national income and foreign exchange. This study aims to determine  farm  incomes of kakao farmers in  Hinekombein Village,  Waibu Subistrict of Jayapura District. Primary data was collected by used of interview and observation guided by a questionnaire. The primary data obtained through interviews with farmers using a questionnaire. Secondary data has been obtained from secondary data sources associated with the research. Sampling was done by simple random sampling for cocoa farmers in Hinekombe Village, number of respondents was 30 farmers cocoa farmers This study showed that annual revenue of cocoa of farmers which has 0.5 of cultivated area  was Rp 1,150,556. The revenue of farmer which has 1 ha of cultivated area was Rp. 2.662.500.

Abstract

Substituting a part of soil on tea Camellia Sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) nurseries by using organic matter could minimize the remove fertile soil from nature. Biofertilizing are a way to improve the biological quality of soil and subsequently tea seedling quality. The aim of the research was to determine the effect of planting media composition and biofertilizer doses on total fungal and bacterial population on planting media; as well as tea seedlings growth. The experiment was conducted using a randomized block design consisting of 9 treatments and 4 replications, each replication consisted of three plants. The treatment consisted of soil without biofertilizer (control), soil + 5% biofertilizer, soil + 10% biofertilizer, cocopeat without biofertilizer, cocopeat + 5% biofertilizer, cocopeat + 10% biofertilizer,  filter cake without biofertilizer, filter cake + 5% biofertilizer, and filter cake + 10% biofertilizer. Biofertilizer used in this experiment were Azotobacter vinelandii and Azotobacter chroococcum that was mixed with growing media before planting. Result of the experiment showed that planting media affect microbial populations differently. The population of total bacteria, total fungi and Azotobacter sp. in the filter cake media with 10% biofertilizer was significantly higher than those of other growing media. However, Azotobacter biofertilizer had no effect on seedling growth of tea (Camellia Sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze) clones Gambung-7

Abstract

High population of inhabitans in watershed area is an important factor which increase watershed’s damage so that, proper land conservation should be done. Research in the watershed Wae Lela has been done to analyze the dominant factors causing soil erosion due to changes in land use, and determine the amount of erosion after land use change in the watershed. The research method was field survey with a synthetic approach pattern by using free surveys observation distance. This observation distance used according to the pattern of land use changes on certain land units, with the type of profile observations/boring. The study found that land use in the watershed Wae Lela has undergone considerable changes in the last 25 years between 1988-2013. Natural forest generally has been transformed to be used for landfarming. Fram planted with multiple cropping of cloves, nutmeg, coconut, tubers, vegetable was become less effective to prevent erosion. This change leads to increased erosion which mainly occurred in mixed farm area up to  6415.06 t/ha/year; covered an area of  220.6 ha or 26.2% of the research area.

Abstract

The use of land without a good management lead to land destruction and environmental damage. Prevention should  be done by soil conservation. The objective of this research was to estimate the level of soil erosion in the upstream of watershed area of Wai Illa by using a survey method for field observations and USLE (Universal Soil Loos Equation) method to predict the amount of eroded soil. The results showed that the existing land use in areas of research was mixed farms, and scrub with a low level of soil damage on land L433 unit1 and high slopes on the land slopes L533 unit 4. It was predicted that actual annual erosion ranged from 16.524 t/ha up to 315.659 t/ha.
