Abstract

Tradition is a habit of people in an area that has been passed down from generation to generation by our ancestors for a long time. One form of tradition that develops in the community is an oral tradition, for example, the tradition of customary prohibitions in Ponorogo Regency. This study aims to find out about the existence of the customary prohibition tradition found in the Golan and Mirah villages, given that these villages have customary prohibitions not to unite in any case, including marriage and other activities involving the Golan and Mirah village groups. In order to approach the problem, an anthropolinguistic approach is used as references. The data were collected through interviews and literature studies which were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The results of this study indicate that there are 5 swearing utterances by Ki Honggolono: 1) Golan and Mirah residents are prohibited from marrying; 2) goods originating from the Golan village are prohibited from being brought to Mirah, and vice versa; 3) goods originating from the two villages are prohibited from being collected or combined; 4) the people of Mirah are prohibited from planting and are not allowed to make products related to soybeans; and 5) Golan residents are prohibited from using straw as roofing material for houses. It is disastrous if anyone violates these rules. This tradition can be interpreted as a form of identity for a community group. Until now, the tradition of customary prohibition is still maintained and maintained in the midst of globalization.

Abstract

Muslims in America again became a concern when the events of 9/11 occurred in 2001. Muslims who already have a negative image in the eyes of the West have strengthened again, especially when it is associated with the issue of terrorism. The stereotype of Muslims as a religious and cultural identity is echoing again. The aims of this research is to explain Muslim stereotypes in the novel Saffron Dream by Abdullah (2009). This researchy uses a qualitative descriptive method with sociology of literature approach. The result of this research is that in the novel Saffron Dreams, there are two forms of racism experienced by the main character: the stereotype that they (Muslims) are terrorists. The second is that the stereotype leads Arrisa into discrimination, leading to physical and verbal violence. Based on all the explanations in the previous discussion, one of the main conclusions drawn by the author is that the cause of the racist behavior accepted by Arrisa stems from bad prejudice against Muslims because of their religious and racial similarities with the terrorists in the 9/11 tragedy in America which claimed thousands of lives. Because these prejudices make Americans think that Islam is a religion that teaches the science of terror and that all Muslims are terrorists.

Abstract

Kuantan Singingi Regency is believed to be a gender-responsive village model in the Small-Scale Gold Mining (PESK) sector, the only one in Indonesia, where more than 204 women participate in the PESK sector. The purpose of study is to analyze the work activities and the forms of work relations among the gold-panning women with gold boss (tauke) using Social Exchange and Rational Choice theories. The research took place in Logas Kuantan Singingi village using qualitative methods through observation, interviews, documentation and triangulation being the data collection techniques. This study found that the work activities of gold-panning women began with preparing work tools, moving to the work site, panning for gold, separating gold and selling gold. The working relations established between gold-panning women and gold boss include permanent buying and selling, accounts receivable, bonus giving, holiday allowance (THR), non-material assistance and family relations. The gold-panning women are still very dependent on the existence of gold boss in selling their panned gold products recalling that the Tombang Wanita Amanah Duo Cooperative still have limited capital and cannot operate as it should.

Abstract

Since 1995, reclamation has been used by the government to provide new land areas for settlements, ports, urban areas, tourism areas, etc. Proponents of reclamation have mentioned several positive benefits of reclamation: creating new land, developing tourism, improving the economy of communities around the coast, increasing employment, increasing productive land, and helping improve aquatic habitats. However, reclamation also has negative impacts: eliminating fishermen's livelihoods, causing water pollution, destroying ecosystems, and eliminating access to fishing grounds.  Out of many negative impacts of reclamation, what has not been widely discussed is the negative impact on women, especially women who work in post-production sector. This article aims to fill this research gap. This article raises the results of a study on the negative impact of sea wall reclamation on female clam shellers in coastal area of Kalibaru, Cilincing, North Jakarta. Based on data collected using the Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) approach with the FGD and in-depth interview methods, various impacts of the sea wall construction were found felt by women shellfish workers: economic impacts, psychological impacts, ecological impacts, socio-cultural impacts, etc. This article focuses on discussing the impact of sea wall construction reclamation on female clam shellers by highlighting the conditions before and after the construction of the sea wall, and the differences in the impacts and effects of sea wall construction based on gender using a feminist political ecology approach.

Abstract

This article reviews studies on women and Christianity that are currently developing in the field of anthropology, and seeks to curate the literature in the discipline to discuss how Christianity conditions sociocultural processes in gender relations. To discuss this, we critically examine the results of ethnographic research on Christianity conducted in the Oceania countries of Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands in the last two decades. Gender is used as a lens to examine these studies. Important findings from this research include studies on cultural transformation, gender roles, and processes of change. Christianity brings changes in social dynamics to a community that differs from before. By providing a space to express masculine and feminine values, Christianity generates tension between gendered values in society such as egalitarianism and hierarchy. Studies on Christianity and gender can help to observe and understand cultural transformation phenomena taking place within a community.
