American fantasy movies Lord of the Ring, Harry Potter, Pirates of Caribbean, and Narnia have become significant especially in the world of entertainment. They have attracted a lot of people around the world to watch. Therefore, it is interesting as well as essential to identify what kind of pleasure people get when they watch fantasy films and how this kind of genre may contribute to society. This study is theoretically useful to contribute to the development of theories in the relevant fields and practically help people to gain better understanding about fantasy films, especially for researchers, academicians, or students. Since films can be treated as symbols, theory of representation is used to show the meaning reflected from watching fantasy movies. The result indicates that fantasy films may offer pleasure such as escaping from the reality and evoking nostalgia which may be significant to understand the essence of life in American society.

Abstract

This research entitled “Exclusion Passivation Strategy of Representation of Social Actor on Aung San Suu Kyi Criticism in The Case of Rohingya Crisis on Online Media Headlines (A CDA Approach)” Exclusion itself is a strategy to disappear the social actors from the text. This strategy is a part of Critical Discourse Analysis tool from Theo Van Leeuwen (2008:29). According to Theo van Leeuwen there are two kinds of exclusion, suppression and backrounding. Suppression is the exclusion that leaves no traces in the representation, excluding both the social actors and their activities, whereas backgrounding is the exclusion that leaves traces in the representation. However, in this article, the type of exclusion used is suppression, especially passivation strategy; the strategy is used as a limitation in the research for this article. There are 3 data collected when two data are pros with Suu Kyi criticism and one data sounded neutral with Suu Kyi criticism.

Abstract

The research proposes that entities occupying as AGENT and AFFECTED apparently appear in clauses of trilingual Balinese Folklores. Although they play as main roles in semantic role system, a concept of animate things has a potential influence in giving a notion. Thus, the aims of the research are to identify and to analyze: (1) the roles of entities in semantic role system, and (2) a concept of animate things. Applying research procedures of analytic descriptive method, collected and classified data are analyzed using Kreidler’s semantic role theory (1998). Briefly, Kreidler (1998:70) claims that AGENT is an entity or a main actor in an event that results or gives a change to another entity, and AFFECTED is an entity that receives the change. In this research, 48 data from 9 books of trilingual Balinese Folklores are analyzed based on the issues suggested. As a result, 45 AGENTS and 49 AFFECTED are identified. Furthermore, all those roles take animate things.
