Abstract

Simawang village has been experiencing a drought since the 2000s due to the uncertainty of the seasonal pattern. All paddy fields in the village depend on rain for irrigation. Consequently, the activities of paddy farming were also disrupted. Some farmers leave their rice fields unplanted, and there is approximately 60 ha of rice fields in Simawang village have turned into abandoned land. In 2014 the farmers started to plant citronella grass on that abandoned land, and in 2017 they already had a citronella oil distiller. This paper discusses the financial feasibility of citronella grass farming and processing and analyzes the farmers' response to those activities. The research found that citronella grass farming and processing in Simawang village is feasible to be implemented. It can be seen from the NPV, IRR, and B/C ratio values of Rp. 218.438.869, 33,2% and 2,1 respectively. Moreover, the farming and processing payback period is two years and 11 months. The cognitive and affective responses of the farmers to farming and processing are good; meanwhile, the conative response is poor. Despite the farmers having good knowledge about farming and processing citronella grass and agreeing that those activities could benefit them both economically and environmentally, most of them have not yet practiced the activities due to land ownership issues.

Abstract

Comprehensive assessment of the Food security situation, analyses of its trends, and early projections are not simple tasks and, therefore, require the application of a well-developed methodological framework and tools. The present article is dedicated to the Food security assessment framework in Armenia, identification of shortfalls in its methodology, and drawing practical recommendations for improvement. In general, Food security assessment in Armenia is based on methodological guidelines provided by UN FAO. However, there is room to improve adaptation in some areas, address local specifics and needs, and enlarge applied tools. Particularly, we discuss the following potential directions for further improvements: 1) synchronization of existing statistical systems and introduction of mutual verification and adjustment mechanisms, 2) adjustments in the calculation of food consumption volumes and food self-sufficiency data, 3) introduction of new aggregated and integral indicators for reflecting different aspects of the Food security situation and 4) improve timelines for data availability, especially period of summarizing and publication of Living Conditions Survey results. It should be noted that, although the discussion is based on the methodology of Food security assessment in Armenia, the issues raised relate to many developing countries around the world, which mostly use the same methodological framework.

Abstract

The research was conducted to assess the satisfaction of tourists with local community-based tourism services in the My Hoa Hung (MHH) commune in Long Xuyen, An Giang, Vietnam. The research findings will be the scientific and practical basis for effective and sustainable tourism development in MHH. A mixed-method of qualitative and quantitative is used in this study. Tourist local officers and tourist providers were interviewed as key informants. Such samples of domestic and foreign tourists were interviewed using a questionnaire survey to collect and analyze the tourists' satisfaction with tourism services. The result shows that tourists visiting MHH come from different regions and countries, from different age groups, and occupations, so their needs and satisfaction with MHH's community-based tourism services are also very diverse. The study uncovers that tourists are most satisfied with the human factor, especially the enthusiasm attitude of the tourist service provider (reaching 4.07 points), and then environmental landscape (3.90 points), infrastructure (3.90 points), price (3.80 points), and the lowest security- safety factor (3.73 points). However, in each factor, there are still a number of criteria that tourists are not satisfied with, which should be paid attention to for sustainable tourism development, such as environmental sanitation, traffic safety, and English communication ability of tourists' service providers.

Abstract

Latex diagnosis was introduced to monitor plant physiological status. In this study, we observed the effect of tapping system alteration in 2019 and 2020 on the latex physiological status. Latex samples were collected from 26 blocks of 10 rubber estates in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The physiological parameters assessed were totally solid, sucrose, inorganic phosphorus, and thiol contents. Our observation showed that the tapping system change did not significantly affect the total solid content. In terms of sucrose content, a significant effect was detected only in tapping change from quarter spiral upward tapping d3 to d4 (7.80 mM and 2.30 mM, respectively). While, inorganic phosphorus content decreased in all tapping system alterations, suggesting a metabolic response to tapping system adjustment. According to sucrose and inorganic phosphorus contents, yield optimization could be implemented in appropriate blocks. The thiols content was not significantly affected by tapping system alteration. The RSH values ranged from 0.32 mM to 0.76 mM, suggesting a wide variation in the antioxidant level of the plant. While sucrose and thiols content showed some discrepancies to the LD theory, Pi content exhibited a dependable response, suggesting that this parameter could be a good indicator to evaluate the tapping system regime. Our result could be a beneficial input for rubber planters to maintain the physiological level to the commercial extent.

Abstract

There are different relationships between people and nature. One of them is about the satisfaction of a basic need for survival: feeding, which in addition to being a human right, is also one of the most important concerns in the world since there are high levels of malnutrition, obesity, insufficiency, and food insecurity. One of the proposals to understand the link between people and nature related to feeding is food sovereignty, which was conceived by civil society to re-signify the role of peasants and their autonomy. This paper is a result of a theoretical reflection to propose a different vision of food sovereignty based on sustainability. Sustainable food sovereignty could promote the visibility and improvement of the different relationships between people and nature throw sustainable agriculture, self-consumption and sustainable consumption, and fair distribution and trade
