Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the influence of variation of current strength, cooling medium, and brand of electrode to tensile strength and distortion connection angle of st 37. SMAW welding using E6013 electrode having 2 mm diameter. The test specimens use st 37 plate with a thickness of 5 mm. Furthermore, distortion testing and tensile tests were performed. In determining the result of the variance of tensile strength and distortion, the experimental design of the Taguchi method is used. The tensile strength response characteristic is the larger is better, while the distortion response characteristics are the smaller is better. The results showed that the optimum condition for tensile strength was a factor of A strong current at level 2 of 65 ampere, C brand factor electrode at level 2 using brand RB electrode, while cooling factor B at level 2 using water type refrigerant. While the optimum condition for the distortion response of factor B cooler with level 2 using air conditioner, brand C factor electrode using RB brand electrode, and factor A strong current level 2 using 65 ampere. Based on ANOVA, the two responses of these three factors have no significant effect on the response.

Abstract

Mechanical Engineering Department of Sebelas Maret University participated on the development of a national electric car (Molina UNS). One of the main components of this car is the brake system. Molina UNS use disc brakes type for all wheels. In this brake type, squeal can arise in the form of disturbance. Therefore, this study aims to determine the dynamic characteristic of disc brake during braking and the effect of brake lining cross-section geometry to brake squeal occurrence. Analysis were performed with the finite element simulation using ANSYS 14.5 software. The pressure of 0,6 MPa is given on lining, disc rotation at 5 rad/s, and friction coefficient is 0,405. Geometry variation of this simulation are brake lining without slot, single slot, double slot, and chamfered. Eigenvalues of simulation results extracted on the frequency between 0 and 13 kHz. The results show the unstable vibration mode that potentially squeal on the configuration I, II, III, IV sequentially occurs at frequencies 8769 Hz, 8713 Hz, 11737 Hz and 11460 Hz. Most of the unstable vibration modes became twisting and bending moment on the lining. Brake lining with chamfered configuration has the smallest squeal potential.

Abstract

On the boiler combustion technique using tiny oil gun is a new environmentally friendly technologies. Application of tiny oil gun on the boiler pulverized coal can reduce oil consumption HSD, ensuring combustion stability at low load conditions and prevent loss of heat energy in the combustion chamber. The tiny oil burner technology used in the sub-critical pulverized coal boiler Pacitan power plant 315 MW. The purpose of this study was to determine the performance and combustion characteristics of a tiny oil gun and compare the efficiency of the use of tiny oil gun at startup conditions in Pacitan 315 MW power plant boiler when compared to using the oil gun. From the analysis of the operating data can be known the performance results of the tiny oil gun is farmore efficient than oil gun, which reached 74.8%.

Abstract

In friction stir welding, it is very important to understand temperature distribution. A three dimensional model temperature distribution during friction stir weldingof the nylon 6 using cylindrical and tapered pin has been simulated using finite element method. A steady state finite Element analysis are performed to obtain the temperature distribution in the welded nylon 6 plate during the welding operation. Heat source from the tool shoulder and the tool pin are set up 80% of the melting point nylon 6. The model has been implemented and solved using ANSYS CFX software. The result showed that peak temperature are higher on the advancing side than the retreating side at the beginning and middle position of friction stir welding process using cylindrical and tapered pin. While the final position of the friction stir welding process with cylindrical and tapered pin, the peak temperature at the retreating side was higher than the advancing side. For overall position of the friction stir welding process with cylindrical and tapered pin, temperature distribution behind the pin was higher than the front pin.

Abstract

Stick-slip motion in a mechanical system is undesirable because it hasnegative effects on the performances such as positioning errors and excessive wear. Stick-slip motion is caused by various parameters such as the difference between static and kinetic coefficient of friction, ❍s-❍k. In this study, the effect of the difference between static and kinetic coefficient of friction, ❍s-❍k, on stick-slip occurrence is numerically simulated and experimentally tested using a mass-slider system. The objective is to find out the effect of ❍s-❍k parameter on the stick-slip propensity, qualitatively, using viskoelastic material. The results indicated that the amplitude of the stick- slip motion increased significantly with the increased value of ❍s-❍kparameter.

Abstract

The potential for biomass to supply much larger amounts of useful energy with reduced environmental impacts. Pyrolysis and other thermochemical conversion processes offer an important opportunity for utilization of biomass and waste. Pyrolysis of biomass can be described as the direct thermal decomposition of the material in the absence of oxygen to obtain an array of solid (char), liquid (tar) and gas products. Pyrolysis agricultural waste are produced tar, char and organic component. The thermal behaviour of selected biomass as rice straw, cassava peel, rice husk, saw dust and corncob was investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Thermogravimetry has proved to be a useful tool in elucidating the decomposition of various biomass material. In thermogravimetric analyzer have RS Key and Adam Utility to convert data from TGA to computer. Sampel weight used 20 gram with heating rate 15 oC/min, maximal temperature 600 oC, holding time 10 minute and irrigated with 100 ml/min gas nitrogen. Result in this research indicates that drying process occur loss weight agricultural residu consecutive 5,35 %, 9,28 %, 12,91 %, 7,83 % and 7,82% and volatile matter in rice straw: 53,16 %, cassava peel: 60,28 %, rice husk: 48,24 %, saw dust: 64,32 % and corncob: 66,71 %.

Abstract

Lightweight concrete foam technology obtained by adding foaming agent (liquid form) into the concrete mix. Lightweight concrete has more advatages than conventional bricks. Lightweight concrete can reduce more structural weight on building. This research use rice husk as an added ingredient on lightweight concrete. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of rice husk addition on compressive strength and water absorption of cellular lightweight concrete. Variation of rice husk adding on lightweight concrete is 0% ; 0,25%; 0,5%; 0,75%; and 1%. Compressive Strength and Water Absorption test were performed using SNI 3421-2011 and SNI 03-0349-1989 standard respectively. Density test was performed to ensure that sample specimens appertain lightweight concrete. The observations during the experiment and test show that the lightweight concrete with 0,5% addition of rice husk has the highest value of compressive strength which 5.30 Mpa. The value of water absorption is directly proportional to the addition of rice husk, where the highest value shown on 1% addition of rice husk. Increasing value of water absorption occurs because rice husk can keep water and can’t easy to remove water content when be dried.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of slant angle (α) on heat transfer enhancement in concentric pipe heat exchanger with forward arrangement of louvered strip insert. In this study, louvered strip insert is varied with α = 15o, 20o and 25o. The working fluid in the inner tube was hot water and in the annulus was cold water, with the flows direction were counterflow. Tests were conducted at a Reynolds number (Re) 5300 – 17,500). At 5300 < Re < 17500 the value of Nui in the inner pipe with the addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o increases in the range of 19.04% - 22.86%, 48.09% - 54.83%, and 67.43% - 77.02% compared with Nui of plain tube respectively. At Re 5300 < Re < 17500 The value of friction factor in the inner pipe with the addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o is 1.52, 2.56 and 3.35 times greater than friction factor of plain tube respectively. Heat transfer enhancement ratio with addition of louvered strip insert with α = 15o, 20o and 25o in the range of 1.00 – 1.06, 1.02 – 1.08 and 1.03 – 1.12 respectively.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the influence of the implementationof CAD/CAM for CNC milling process to the surface roughness andprecision. Specimens were made by using seven types of cutting process.There are face milling, pocket milling, profile milling, slot milling, drilling,thread milling, and surface contouring. The results showed that theimplementation of CAD/CAM with a variation of the cutting processproduces roughness value which is lower than without the implementation ofCAD/CAM. The surface roughness values for each of the cutting processwere face milling process (0.5028 μm; 0.5132 μm), slot milling (0.664 μm;0.6556 μm), profile milling (1.282 μm; 1.3128 μm), pocket milling (1.3852μm; 1.4856 μm) and drilling process (1.9944 μm; 2.1136 μm). The averagevalue of the dimensions from the measurement showed the differencebetween the results of the implementation of CAD/CAM and without theimplementation of CAD/CAM. The percentage difference in the length andwidth were respectively 0.037%; 0.059% for profile milling; 0.039%;0.061% for pocket milling; and 0.151%; 0.317% for drilling. Statistical useof the implementation of CAD/CAM does not significantly affect the value ofthe surface roughness but it has a significant influence on the precision ofthe product with a 95% precision level.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the flow characteristic of two phases through the channel with sudden expansion in the form of change of flow pattern and pressure recovery. The test was carried out with variation of superficial velocity of water 0.2-1.3 m / s and superficial air velocity of 0.2-1.9 m / s resulting in pattern of three flow patterns ie bubble, plug, and slug. The expansion channel resulted in some changes to the flow pattern that originally plugs in the upstream channel into bubble in the downstream channel and the slug becomes plug. Pressure recovery experimental results compared with the homogeneous model flow equation and Wadle correlation, both correlations have predictions with standard deviation values of 0.32 and 0.43.
