Abstract

This article discusses the representation of cultural intersection in M.H. Szekely-Lulofs' novel Kuli, a colonial text that records the lives of indentured laborers on Deli plantations. Starting from the multi-ethnic historical context of North Sumatra, this research highlights how cross-ethnic encounters—Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese, Betawi, Malay, and even Chinese—are constructed through stereotypes, conflict, and power relations. Lulofs, a Dutch-descended female writer, uses her personal experiences in Deli as both the setting and the medium to depict a fragmented social reality. Utilizing the perspective of literary sociology, the analysis is directed towards two main aspects: first, ethnic diversity as the foundation of Deli society, shaped by migration and colonization; and second, intersectional conflicts arising as a consequence of differences in ethnic identities and representations within the narrative. The novel Kuli presents ethnic stereotypes in layers: Betawi people are depicted as arrogant, Madurese as tough, Sundanese as polite, and even Chinese who are socially and economically marginalized. This stereotype is not only an identity marker but also a source of conflict that culminates in intergroup violence. Inter-ethnic intersection is depicted ambiguously—on one hand, it gives rise to "ship brother" solidarity, while on the other, it triggers exclusion and criminalization. The novel Kuli, therefore, presents plurality as an arena of tension, where ethnic representations operate within a colonial framework that reinforces social hierarchies

Abstract

This investigation seeks to identify and scrutinize the typologies of vocabulary exercises incorporated within the "Grow with English" textbook designed for Grade 4 students. Vocabulary acquisition is fundamentally crucial to language learning, particularly at the elementary level where learners are establishing foundational linguistic competence. This textbook, extensively utilized in Indonesian primary education, is structured to support English acquisition through diverse and engaging pedagogical activities. Employing a content analysis methodology, this research systematically examines the vocabulary tasks presented in each unit of the Grade 4 textbook. The exercises were subsequently categorized according to established activity formats, such as picture-word matching, multiple-choice questions, cloze (fill-in-the-blank) tasks, crossword puzzles, and word searches. The findings reveal a predominance of matching and fill-in-the-blank activities, which are specifically aimed at developing both lexical recognition and contextual comprehension. While more interactive formats, including crossword puzzles and word searches, are also incorporated, their frequency of appearance is comparatively lower. The diversity of exercise types suggests the textbook endeavors to provide a balanced and stimulating approach to vocabulary development. This study is anticipated to contribute to the evaluation and refinement of English instructional materials, particularly concerning the selection of effective vocabulary pedagogy for primary learners. Furthermore, the results may serve as a valuable reference for educators in designing or supplementing classroom vocabulary interventions tailored to student requirements.

Abstract

This study explored the use of TikTok as an informal learning platform to support Generation Z English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in improving their English speaking skills. A qualitative descriptive method was applied, involving 20 Gen-Z EFL learners selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected over an eight-week period using semi-structured interviews, observations, and analysis of learner TikTok video testimonies. The findings indicated that learners perceived TikTok as an engaging, accessible, and motivating platform that contributed to improvements in pronunciation, vocabulary use, fluency, and speaking confidence. Learners frequently engaged with content such as pronunciation tutorials, daily conversation expressions, and short vocabulary lessons, which encouraged repeated exposure and self-directed speaking practice. Despite these advantages, the study also identified several challenges, including distractions, limited depth of explanations, and the presence of unreliable learning content. These issues suggest that learners require adequate digital literacy and strategic guidance to maximize the educational benefits of TikTok. Overall, TikTok was found to be a supportive tool for developing speaking skills when used intentionally, although it is best utilized as a supplementary resource alongside formal English instruction.

The research utilized a descriptive qualitative design and was conducted out at SMA Budi Utomo Medan over a duration of four weeks. The participants included 27 EFL students and one English teacher, chosen by purposive sampling. Data were gathered via classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The findings indicated that Quizlet was methodically utilized as a primary instructional resource. The teacher employed many Quizlet features, such as flashcards, matching activities, spelling drills, and Quizlet Live, to facilitate vocabulary acquisition. Students exhibited significant engagement and conveyed positive perception of the platform. Despite the identification of various hurdles, including initial difficulties and unreliable internet connectivity, these issues lessened over time. Overall, the study concluded that Quizlet served as an excellent tool for vocabulary instruction in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a critical component of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), particularly for nursing students who must process spoken information accurately in academic and professional healthcare contexts. Despite its importance, listening instruction in many nursing programs remains insufficiently aligned with learners’ actual communicative needs. This study aims to investigate the target listening needs of nursing students at Universitas Bunda Thamrin in relation to their academic studies and future professional responsibilities, as well as to identify the listening difficulties they currently experience in learning English. Adopting a descriptive needs analysis design, the study employs a convergent mixed-methods approach that integrates quantitative data from questionnaires and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. The needs analysis framework combines Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA) to examine the gap between students’ current listening competence and the demands of academic and clinical nursing contexts. The findings reveal that nursing students prioritize professional listening needs, such as understanding patient complaints and medical instructions, over general academic listening tasks. Additionally, students experience significant listening difficulties related to limited medical vocabulary, fast speech rate, unfamiliar accents, and listening anxiety. These findings highlight the necessity of designing ESP listening instruction that is context-specific, learner-centered, and grounded in empirical needs analysis. The study contributes to ESP pedagogy by providing evidence-based insights for improving listening curricula in nursing education.
