Abstract

Since the existence of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson (2003), many research has focused on how the conceptualization of the abstract domain is represented in a concrete domain. This leads to a realization that metaphor is more than just a poetic device, it can show how a community understands an abstract concept using a more concrete one. In this study, conceptual metaphors of terrorism are investigated to find out how the Indonesian mass media represent it in their publication. The results show that most of the metaphors are conceptually related to LIVING ORGANISM while one being specific to Indonesian culture, which is SHADOW PUPPET. In contrast, there are no violent conceptual metaphors found in the Indonesian mass media, such as TERRORISM IS WAR or DISEASE. This can bring different effects on the readers of mass media, such as psychological and social. Also understanding the conceptual metaphors in mass media can help us understanding the framing of terrorism, in this case, in Indonesia.

Abstract

The study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the messages conveyed by the posters related to COVID-19. Employing descriptive qualitative method, the study analyzed the verbal and visual elements of health promotion posters posted by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) official Instagram, using Halliday’s social semiotic metafunction and Kress and van Leeuwen’s multimodality. The study found that the multimodal posters effectively conveyed messages related to instructions, information, and prohibitions. However, an imbalance in the application of various modes within the posters was identified, posing the potential for misunderstanding and confusion among viewers. Nevertheless, the study offers several suggestions on creating health promotion posters that are both persuasive and informative. The findings contribute to the development of health campaign poster materials that capture attention, convey messages effectively, and align with expectations outlined in health campaign targets, while simultaneously ensuring comprehensive communication. The study provides evaluative results that can inform effective communication strategies for promoting public health during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Advertising is an endless source of research. The language used in advertising is a language that is easy to understand and persuasive. This paper discusses the Japanese language of Japan’s advertisements taken from printed and online magazines. This research was analyzed with Systemic  Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 64 ) and Multimodal by Kress & van Leeuwen (1996, 2006). This research is qualitative and descriptive and analyzed as grammar of Japanese advertisements. The objects of the advertisement were obtained in three stages of advertising - pioneering, competitive, and retentive stages. This type of pioneering advertising is used in the introductory stages of the life cycle of a product. Competition is useful when the product has reached the market-growth and especially the market-maturity stage. The Retentive advertisement is when the product has achieved a favorable status in the market, maturity, or declining stage. The results showed that many Japanese advertisements in pioneering and competitive steps can be analyzed with SFL and used material process. In the Retentive step, many ads are in ellipsis words so only analyzed with Multimodal. All the advertisements used the grammar of material and relational processes.  This paper is useful not only for the linguistic world, especially Japanese linguistics but also for the actors or advertisers so that consumers are more interested in using their products

This paradox is narrated in the novel series entitled Kelir Slindet and Telembuk: Dangdut dan Kisah Cinta yang Keparat by Kedung Darma Romansa. Two characters (Pak Darmawan and Kaji Nasir) used Qasidah and Dangdut as political tools. This research aims to find out the factors that influence differences in public perceptions of qasidah and dangdut and how the strategies of the two characters dominate the arena. This was a qualitative descriptive study. It used the theory of Pierre Bourdieu's Habitus and Arena. The results showed that the different perspectives and choices of people in the two novels were influenced by social piety, prestige, experience, and taste. In conclusion, Pak Darmawan with his strategy using Dangdut won the village head election because Dangdut was not only considered entertainment but it depicted the culture of Indonesia.

The imagination set forth in a literary work is closely related to the author's environment and social phenomena, together with the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of a literary work, these messages are made livelier so that they are more accepted by their respective audience.
