Abstract

The prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents in Indonesia has significantly increased; however, this rise has not been accompanied by adequate recovery facilities, particularly for this vulnerable age group. Existing mental health recovery facilities predominantly emphasize conventional psychotherapy methods. In contrast, art therapy provides a more engaging and interactive approach by utilizing art as a medium to facilitate the recovery process. Therefore, this study aims to identify the essential facilities required in an art therapy center, particularly in supporting the recovery of mental health disorders among adolescents in Indonesia. The research approach was conducted using an inductive qualitative method, including observation and field surveys at established art therapy facilities. This method, is analyzes data, essentially involving producing an overall summary of the content of the data set. The findings indicate that art therapy is a deeply personal experience for each individual, as it involves expressing emotions. Because of this, the approach should be personalized to each person's unique needs and supported with a variety of art media and appropriate facilities to support a meaningful and effective creative process. Due to the complexity of various methods that can be used in art therapy, further research is needed to explore the relationship between art therapy methods and the design of specialized art therapy spaces.

Abstract

Rattan is a natural material with high fiber content.  Rattan is cut into various sizes and types to be utilized. The process of cutting and slicing generally leaves waste in the form of elongated rattan hearts of irregular shapes and sizes. The amount is large, almost 30%, and is not utilized. However, waste from the splitting process in the rattan industry is usually disposed of through burning, leading to substantial waste. Therefore, this study aims to reduce rattan splitting waste through weaving techniques and then use it as a basis for innovation in furniture products and interior elements. The study was conducted using an experimental research method to produce woven sheets. Karen weaving has been applied to materials with similar characteristics, such as lidi, vetiver, and bamboo. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis, with inferential analysis, tests the hypothesis by generalizing. Following the weaving experiment, natural coloring and interior product design were conducted. The design process included sketching, creating shop drawings, modeling, and bringing the design to life through prototypes. The results consist of woven rattan fiber strip sheets with a striped pattern, light brown color, textured, somewhat rigid, yet flexible enough to be folded or rolled lengthwise. Various techniques can be applied to crafting products, such as gluing, bending, rolling, folding, and sewing. The most effective application of woven rattan fiber sheets is fixed attachment on a flat surface with a flat direction. The contribution of research results can add alternative materials for the creation of craft products, furniture, and interiors made from rattan waste woven sheets. These rattan fiber strip sheets can be applied in 2D and 3D homeware product designs, serving decorative and protective functions.

Abstract

The illustration process in visual communication design plays a critical role in supporting product development; however, there remains a lack of systematic and empirical studies that examine its practical stages within the design research context, particularly in the field of storybook illustration. This study aims to identify and describe the stages of the illustration process specifically applied in the development of storybook products. A qualitative descriptive case study approach was used, with data collected through literature review, in-depth interviews with four professional illustrators, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using content analysis techniques to extract patterns of practice and define the illustration workflow. The findings reveal an integrated, eleven-stage illustration process that includes narrative exploration, concept development, sketching, refinement, visual enhancement, layout, validation, and final presentation. This process is shown to be iterative, reflective, and context-sensitive, rather than strictly linear. The study contributes a structured conceptual model of the illustration process in design practice, providing theoretical insights and a practical reference for researchers, educators, and practitioners in visual communication design.

Abstract

This study investigates narrative strategies in contemporary Indonesian horror films to understand how they convey cultural meanings and engage audiences. While horror is often dismissed as entertainment, Indonesian horror serves as a cultural mirror, reflecting societal fears, spiritual beliefs, and identity struggles. The study focuses on eight films released between 2019 and 2024, selected for their narrative complexity, cultural relevance, and critical reception. Using qualitative narrative analysis, the research applies Seymour Chatman's distinction between story and discourse alongside classical and modern narrative theories by Bordwell, Todorov, Genette, and others. The analysis identifies three-act and five-act structures and nonlinear, circular, and episodic narratives. These structures enhance suspense, emotional engagement, and thematic depth. The findings show that Indonesian horror films blend local folklore, Islamic rituals, and communal values with experimental storytelling. For example, Siksa Kubur uses fragmented timelines to depict trauma, while Qodrat integrates religious exorcism into its plot structure. Such strategies deepen audience immersion and articulate culturally specific anxieties. This research contributes to Indonesian cinema studies by highlighting how narrative form shapes meaning and emotional impact. It offers a framework for analyzing horror beyond Western paradigms and provides insights into how traditional and modern storytelling coexist in Southeast Asian media. Academically, it advances narrative theory in a non-Western context. Practically, it supports filmmakers and cultural producers in using horror to engage with social issues and connect with global audiences through culturally grounded storytelling.

Abstract

Selonding Gamelan in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Bali, plays an important role in the traditional Mekaré-kare ritual and represents the close relationship between art and the social structure of the local community. This study aims to reveal how the aesthetics of Selonding Gamelan are mobilized as a symbolic strategy in responding to external influences on the local cultural order. Using ethnographic and participatory observation methods, especially in the context of the Mekaré-kare ritual, this study finds that Selonding Gamelan not only functions as a musical instrument, but also as a cultural medium that dampens elements of violence, negotiates identity, and strengthens social cohesion. Gamelan aesthetics are used consciously as a mechanism for protecting customary values against external cultural intervention. The conclusion of this study shows that ritual art has a transformative power in shaping the collective identity and cultural sovereignty of traditional communities. These findings open up new space for studying the relationship between art, ritual, and politics in the study of Nusantara performing arts.

Abstract

This research deeply examines how the lyrics of Anang Ardiansyah's songs reflect the dynamics of character values and cultural identity of the people of Banjarmasin, by using Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic approach which consists of 5 stages: (1) Theme Identification; (2) Naive Understanding; (3) Deep Interpretation; (4) Fusion Horizon that allows researchers to capture the various layers of meaning contained in song lyrics. This systematic analytical process provides a solid methodological framework to examine the representation of fundamental values such as Islamic religiosity, local wisdom, patriotism, and social solidarity, which are inherent in the cultural identity of the Banjar people. This research analyses the symbolic and metaphorical meanings in four selected songs: Bastamiyah, Bismillah Kata Bamula, Puhun Rambai, and Paris Barantai. Through a systematic interpretive analysis, which involves a layer-by-layer interpretation to decipher the text based on its cultural and historical context, this study reveals that the lyrics represent fundamental values such as Islamic religiosity, local wisdom, patriotism, and social solidarity that are deeply rooted in the cultural identity of the Banjar people. The findings show that the songs function as a medium for transmitting and preserving cultural values, bridging tradition and modernity. The significance of this research lies in identifying the mechanisms through which traditional art has a role in transmitting and preserving cultural values.

Abstract

Digital creative enterprises face significant strategic risk from platform dependency, as reliance on a single marketplace can lead to unstable revenue when algorithmic changes reduce visibility. This research addresses that risk by designing and empirically testing a brand activation strategy to elevate brand awareness for Kemsgraphics, a virtual studio highly dependent on Fiverr. The strategy was developed using the Brand Activation Process (Discovery, Strategic Development, Creative Development, Delivery, and Evaluation) as the primary framework, enriched by the incorporation of the Steps of Effective Communication Development for strategic planning and Design Thinking principles for creative solution development. The impact of the strategy was tested using a quasi-experimental, time-series design with mixed-method analysis, collecting daily performance data and qualitative insights from five digital platforms. The intervention produced an 890% increase in TikTok follower growth and substantial improvements in reach, engagement, and profile visits across all platforms during a five-day period. This research demonstrates how an integrated, theory-based brand activation strategy can help remote creative businesses build brand resilience and reduce platform risk, providing a practical blueprint for managing digital brand presence in the creative sector.

Abstract

The transformation of Lampung tapis cloth into a modern fashion product through innovations in manufacturing techniques and materials used has had a significant impact on cultural and economic aspects. The purpose of this study is to analyze the transformation of tapis cloth with a focus on innovations in techniques and materials used and their impact on cultural and economic aspects. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The data sources used are informants, places and events, and documents. This study collected data through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The data obtained were analyzed using an interactive model. The results of the study indicate that the transformation of Lampung tapis cloth through innovations in techniques and materials was carried out to adapt to the development of the times and dynamic consumer tastes, so that tapis cloth remains relevant and in demand by the wider community. The transformation of tapis cloth has an impact on the cultural aspect, namely supporting efforts to preserve regional culture, strengthening regional identity, and promoting Lampung culture to the national and international levels. In the economic aspect, the transformation of tapis cloth is able to increase people's income and absorb labor, thus providing a positive contribution to the local economy and improving people's welfare.

Abstract

This study examines how a “Crackers Man”, an Instagram content creator and crackers maker, publicly known through his Instagram account @jeniinugraha, utilizes distinctive costumes for visual self-representation and shaping a digital persona, which transcends the conventional perception of his profession. This study aims to analyze the strategies and impacts of this unconventional approach. A qualitative case study method was employed, utilizing in-depth content analysis of @jeniinugraha’s Instagram profile, semi-structured interviews with the creator, and a survey of audience perceptions. The main findings of this study suggest that the consistent use of thematic costumes combined with humorous messaging strategies contributes to the visual uniqueness of the content and an approachable digital persona. This study underscores the effectiveness of innovative visual communication for personal branding by micro-entrepreneurs on social media, offering a model for leveraging creativity to build distinction in crowded digital markets.

Abstract

In addition to contributing to economic growth, the textile industry has the potential to produce large amounts of fabric waste, which often ends up in trash cans and pollutes the environment. Responding to these conditions, this study aims to explore the use of fabric waste as the main material in the creation of fiber art, evaluate environmental and economic benefits, and see positive impacts on society. This research uses an art practice-based approach to create fiber art from waste materials using weaving, collage, and patchwork techniques. The method includes collecting and selecting fabric waste based on the type of textile material, applying various artistic techniques, and analyzing the aesthetics and functionality of the artwork made. The results of the study show that textile waste created through a combination of weaving, collage, and patchwork techniques can produce artistic and aesthetic fiber artworks.  This fiber artwork contributes to the concept of sustainability in fine art and emphasizes that fabric waste can be converted into creative products to extend the life cycle of materials. Thus, it can open new opportunities in the recycling-based creative industry.
