Abstract

Amaranth seeds cultivated for agricultural purposes may experience a decline in vigor and viability beyond their expiration date, resulting in reduced or failed germination. Osmopriming, a seed priming technique, germination capacity, and seedling vigor by regulating partial hydration while preventing premature radicle protrusion. The objective of this research to certain effective concentration and soaking duration of KNO3. The experiment used six-year expired green amaranth seeds and a two-factor factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The first factor was KNO3 concentration at 0% (water), 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%, and the second factor was soaking duration at 1 and 10 minutes. The observations encompassed germination percentage, vigor index, and radicle emergence, among other parameters. KNO₃ osmopriming effectively restores the viability and vigor of deteriorated green amaranth seeds. The most effective treatment is 2% concentration of KNO3 and 10 minute soaking time duration for germination capacity and vigor index. Abstract

The mangrove forest is the habitat of several animals, such as crabs, gastropods, and bivalves. Some species of animals live around mangrove roots, both in hard and soft (muddy) substrates; among them are mangrove crabs. Mangrove crabs (Scylla spp.) belong to the Portunidae family and are found in nearly all coastal waters, particularly on coastal areas covered with mangroves. This study aims to assess crab diversity in the Ketapang Indah mangrove forest in Aceh Singkil. Sampling points for collecting mangrove crabs were determined using the random sampling method. Crabs were collected using traps with a diameter of 45 cm². Traps were placed randomly at three locations within a 10 m × 10 m area in each mangrove sampling plot. The results of the study revealed a diversity of five mangrove species: Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora stylosa, and Sonneratia alba. The diversity of mangrove crabs found at the study site consisted of three species: Scylla serrata, Scylla olivacea, and Scylla paramamosain. The overall species diversity of mangroves and crabs were moderate category. Although the mangrove ecosystem provides suitable habitat for Scylla spp., mangrove stand density were not reflected in crab density. Mud crab abundance is influenced more by habitat quality than by mangrove density alone. Conservation efforts should also emphasize maintaining habitat complexity and environmental quality besides increasing mangrove stand density to support sustainable mud crab populations. Abstract

  Ultisols is a soil type characterized by low fertility, particularly deficient in phosphorus (P), which is essential for plant growth. Organic amendments, such as compost, have the potential to improve soil nutrient availability. This study aimed to analyze the effect of applying a mixed compost of chicken manure and Leucaena leucocephala on several chemical properties of Ultisols.  The experiment was conducted from February to July 2023 in Simpang Sungai Duren Village, Jambi Luar Kota District, Muaro Jambi Regency. A Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six treatments and four replications was used, resulting in 24 experimental plots. The treatments consisted of different application rates of compost made from a mixture of chicken manure and Leucaena leaves, namely 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 tons ha⁻¹, applied 15 days before planting. The results indicated that the compost derived from chicken manure and Leucaena leaves significantly increased the available P content in Ultisols compared with the control treatment. The highest available P content was obtained at the highest compost application rate, which increased available phosphorus by 1245% compared to the control. In addition, compost application improved several soil chemical properties, including an increase in soil pH by 28.2% and soil organic matter content by 38%, which contributed to the enhanced availability of phosphorus in the soil. The compost mixture of chicken manure and Leucaena leaves proved effective in increasing the availability of phosphorus in Ultisols, offering a potential strategy for improving crop productivity in nutrient-poor soils. Abstract

Diaporthe vexans (syn: Phomopsis vexans) is a major postharvest pathogen causing Phomopsis blight and fruit rot in eggplant (Solanum melongena), leading to significant economic losses in Indonesia. This study aimed to identify the causal agent of eggplant fruit rot, evaluate its virulence and host range among some Solanaceous crops, and determine the optimal synthetic media for mycelial growth and sporulation. Fungal isolates were obtained from symptomatic eggplants at Kemang Wholesale Market, Bogor, and identified through morphological and molecular analysis amplifying the ITS region. Virulence was tested using mycelial plug and conidial suspension methods, while host range assays were conducted on tomato, chili, black nightshade, and cucumber. Isolate V2 was identified as putatively belonging to D. vexans, showing 98% sequence identity with D. vexans from the Philippines and submitted to the GenBank with accession number PV936605.1. Pathogenicity tests indicated that the apical and middle regions of eggplant fruits tended to be more susceptible to infection than the basal region. Host range evaluations revealed that while D. vexans is primarily asssociated with eggplant but was capable of infecting other Solananeous hosts under artificial inoculation. For laboratory assays, potato dextrose agar (PDA) supported the highest radial growth (79.03 mm), but cornmeal agar (CMA) was the effective for stimulating dense sporulation (4.9 x 106 spores mL⁻¹). These results indicate that D. vexans poses a cross-contamination risk during postharvest storage and that among the media evaluated, CMA was the most effective medium for inoculum production of isolate V2.
