Focus Journal of Asian Orientation in Theology (JAOT) is founded and sponsored by Sanata Dharma University School of Theology. It publishes scientific and critical thoughts in Asian Theology with Contextual and interdisciplinary approaches. Scope JAOT develops contextual theological discourses in dialogue with sociological, anthropological, comparative religion, religious studies, historical, cultural and psychological perspectives and takes the diversity of Asian societies and cultures as its context. The journal is open to scholars from all religious backgrounds.

Abstract

This article attempts to answer the following question: how to elaborate an Indonesian social mariology that is based on the experience of the faithful? In answering this question, this article uses the critical reading method on four main themes, namely: (1) social mariology according to Clodovis M. Boff; (2) Contextual theology according to the FABC (Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences); (3) The methods of contextual theology according to Stephen B. Bevans; (4) Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. The results of this critical reading have been synthesized in the following 3 subjects: (1) social mariology, (2) social mariology within the context of the FABC’s contextual theology; (3) a plan of Indonesian social mariology based on the experience of the faithful. An authentic contribution of this article is found in number 3: it offers a way to be applied in heeding the context, namely by processing the experience of the faithful. This approach is based on the way of Asian contextual theologizing according to the FABC and Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics. Besides to social mariology, this method can be applied to other themes of contextual theological studies.

Abstract

This qualitative research with a phenomenological approach aims to describe nyadran as a tradition that is a means for the community to preserve a harmonious life together. Used observation and interview methods to collect data related to the nyadran ceremony. Observations were carried out to get an idea of the process of the nyadran ceremony. Next, the researcher interviewed three respondents who had experience preparing and carrying out the nyadran tradition in the Sorowajan hamlet, Banguntapan sub-district, and Bantul district. The data are analyzed using the essential elements of harmony in studying Javanese philosophy. There are three critical findings from this study. First, the Sorowajan hamlet community holds a nyadran ceremony annually involving interfaith community members. Second, the nyadran ceremony is a means to maintain and preserve the harmony of the Sorowajan community through ritual ceremonies that unite adherents of different religions. Third, the nyadran ceremony in the Sorowajan hamlet is a local tradition that has developed into a celebration of togetherness that involves people from different religious backgrounds and beliefs. Members of the community of interfaith and theology work together and are responsible for the implementation of the nyadran ceremony in a solemn and lively manner for the realization of a harmonious life together in the unity of Indonesia, which has diversity in religion, belief, ethnicity, race, culture, and local wisdom.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to show that the spirituality of Francis de Sales in his work, “Introduction to the Devout Life” is still relevant today, especially for the formation of priests and religious candidates in Indonesia. His work was written when as the Bishop of Geneva, he was concerned for the spiritual life of the laity in his diocese because of the Protestantism movement that swept most of Europe at that time. Francis wants to tell his people that, not only in the Protestant Church, but in the Catholic Church also that holiness belongs to everyone, not only for the clergy, monks, and nuns. His book provides a practical guide for anyone who wants to develop a spiritual life. De Sales offers a new perspective that the first step to develop a spiritual life does not begin with the celebration of the sacraments and liturgies but from the human longing for God that arises from everyone#39;s heart. This longing of God must be cultivated and nurtured, first of all, in spiritual friendship with those who are more experienced in spiritual life. In the formation, this is known in several forms such as spiritual guidance, personal assistance, or cura personalis.

Abstract

Catholic Bishop Conference through the Catechetical Commission Catholic to youth to involve in political issues and to become political leaders has become an embryonic momentum for ‘citizenship catechesis’. How does social activism among Catholic youth at St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Kotabaru Yogyakarta become the embryo of the birth of citizenship catechesis? The two authors conducted qualitative research with a naturalistic descriptive design through participative observation, literature review and semi-structured interviews to collect data. The Catholic youth in St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Kotabaru Yogyakarta, who belong to the Z generation and are actively involved in social activism, is the leading research informant. Citizenship catechesis embryo grows organically through social activism, such as Interfaith Dialogue and Sega Mubeng. Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, parishes need urgently to initiate citizenship catechesis with activities that allow the faithful Z generation to borrow Pope Francis’ terminology, ‘to be involved, not just observers, even spectators.’

Abstract

This qualitative research uses a literature review method with the aim of exploring Charles de Foucauld's thoughts on dialogue and evangelization among Muslims. The ideas of dialogue and evangelization can be traced from his life story as a Catholic priest and missionary.  His spiritual life was colored by seeking the last place, as Jesus lived in Nazareth, in several Trappist monasteries, and finally chose to become a missionary priest. He became a missionary in Algeria in preparation for a mission to Morocco. He lived among the Muslims in Beni Abbs - Tuaregh and Tamanrasset. He built a house of brotherhood to build brotherhood with everyone. He testifies to a simple and ascetic life. After Foucauld's death, several groups of followers grew in Europe, namely Piccoli Fratelli and Piccole Sorelle. They form small communities that continue the spirit of dialogue and evangelization by living as a unit in society in the form of an inclusive basic community. The basic community aims to build universal brotherhood, regardless of ethnicity, religion, and race. The inclusive dialogue model is very relevant for the multicultural and multireligious Indonesian society.
