Abstract

There had been a research of antibacterial extract of white pumpkin leaves (Lagenaria cineraria) activity towards some pathogen bacteria. The objective of the study was to present the antibacterial activity of extract of white pumpkin leaves, commonly called Lagenaria siceraria, against some 8 pathogen bacteria such as (Escherichia coli, Vibrio sp, Streptococcus mutants, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella thypi, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus epidermidis). The research was conducted by extracting the white pumpkin leaves and using 96% ethanol liquid. Afterwards the screening test was performed using microbe test and ethanol extract of white pumpkin leaves with 0,5% concentration and 1 % (b/v) with negative control of disc piper. It was found that the 0,5% concentration could prevent 4 pathogen bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutants, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. After conducting the screening test followed by the mutant prevention concentration (MPC) test and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test, in which the result was the ethanol extract of white pumpkin leaves with 0,5% concentration could prevent 4 pathogen bacteria which was obtained from screening test 2 % concentrationagainst extract of white pumpkin leaves that are able to kill 4 pathogen bacteria. Another test was performed with inhibitory test through agar diffusion method so that some blocking pathogen bacteria to screening result (Escherichia Coli, Streptococcus mutants, Staphylococcus Aurous, and Staphylococcus Epidermidises) against 0,5%, 1% and 2 % concentration. Moreover the chloramphenicol is as positive control. The result which was obtained respectively was the biggest obstacle zone diameter towards Escherichia coli, Streptococcus mutants, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria were 2,2 cm; 4,1 cm; 2,43 cm and 3,73 cm.

Abstract

The Islamic law of tahkim (med-arb) has stipulated certain qualities which must be observed to qualify as a mediator- arbitrator. However, having understood that mediation is actually a method developed under the framework of tahkim and the person who conducts it is by right an arbitrator, it poses the question of whether a mediator-arbitrator is required to possess qualifications similar to those of arbitrator. This paper seeks to examine and analyse the conditions and qualifications of a mediator and an arbitrator from the Islamic law perspective. The study adopts content analysis approach. It is therefore conducted based on and with reference to the Islamic law method of med-arb (tahkim) as discussed by Muslim jurists in classical texts. The findings show that in Islamic law of tahkim, a mediator and an arbitrator share almost similar roles in resolving marital disputes. A mediator and an arbitrator supposedly reflect each other in character and qualifications in many ways if not all.

Abstract

Apart from corporate governance which is of priority among the shareholders and stakeholders, the issue of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been of growing concern to all members of society lately. This is because the current global economic and recent US financial crisis had severely impacted the global economy which served a good reminder. The consequences of the crisis not only made many investors around the world lost money but also caused many employees in US, Europe and to some extend in Asia lost their jobs permanently. The repercussions would hinder social progress as people have to live below their means to cope with higher cost of living. Meantime, irre- sponsible corporations that contributed directly or indirectly to global warming continued to threaten people’s living environment amidst of the above two issues.
