Abstract

Abstract The research observed the life of people who live on the slopes of Mount Raung, precisely in Prengpadduh Village. They live on the slopes of Mount Raung with a radius distance of 7 km from Mount Raung and including KRB II with the threats of hot clouds, lava eruptions, lava rain, heavy ash rain, avalanches of volcanic debris, or hurl of incandescent rocks, but they still survive to stay at the area. Using the theoretical framework of social action of Max Weber and Verstehen method, the researcher observed how the meaning of life on the slope of Mount Raung for Prengpadduh Village is. In this research, the researcher used the technique of interview, observation, and literature review. The used determination technique of informants was purposive, and triangulation technique was used as a test of the data validity. The research result showed that Prengpadduh Village had the meaning of life on the slopes of Mount Raung as the source of life, as a comfortable place to live and as a place of social relationships. On the other sides, people interpreted the disaster as an event that disrupt the continuity of daily life, such as the declining quality of the latex, the contamination of an open water tank, the damaged coffee plants, the grass for fodder affected by volcanic ash, the disrupting of driving, the strong winds that knock down the pine trees and houses, the disrupting of rain to work activities, and the damaging of electronic devices caused by lightning. Abstract

As elaborated in a research background, the flood has occurred in Wonoasri Village since 1954, and the disaster frequently occurs every year. A seasonal flood happens every year, which causes physical and non-physical damages. The flood damages agricultural lands, animal farms and wipes away inhabitants’ residence, facilities, and infrastructure, resulting in serious impacts on the inhabitants’ economy. In such condition, the people that live in the Village of Wonoasri feel worried and scared. In this case, the people have mitigation skill that can be performed after a seasonal flood, and they carry out the mitigating activities in the process of flood recovery, such mitigating aspects by the people, particularly related to the social aspect, allude to Ecological recovery through non-physical and physical means. Ecological recovery by non-physical means represents an effort to deal with social functions. The research focused on the description approach with case study type, using purposive sampling. The theory employed alluded to Constructivist theory by Petter L Begger, which especially pertains to elaborating the process of knowledge in daily life as derived from human thinking and acting, and those maintained in reality. The process of knowledge itself consisted of the social reality that was derived from the process of knowledge. In emphasizing awareness, human’s awareness is always focused on an object. The fundamental of awareness could not be made obvious because humans only have awareness of the phenomenon. Keywords: Construction, Seasonal flood, Mitigation, Human Ecology

Based on 2012 Tsunami Master Plan, Jember Regency, East Java, is categorized as a tsunami-phone area. Therefore, BPBD (Regional Board on Disaster Management) of Jember Regency carries out a community capacity building through the establishment DESTANA (Disaster Resilient Village), dissemination of disaster and installatiom of EWS sirens. This research focuses on how the communities' understanding and interpretation on the siren as a medium for tsunami EWS. The research aimed to identify and describe the knowledge construction of Watu Ulo coastal communities about Tsunami EWS sirens using descriptive, qualitative method. Informans were determined by purposive sampling technique. The research used Peter L. Berger's theory of Social Construction of Reality to analyze the knowledge construcion of Watu Ulo coastal communities about the EWS sirens. The result showed that the residents of Watu Ulo have knowledge about the condition of the area which has tsunami potentials as well as nature signs of the tsunami. Constuction of Watu Ulo as a tsunami prone area is strenghened with the installation of EWS sirens as a medium for tsunami warning. The construction of public knowledge about EWS passed through three processes i.e. externalitation, and internalition objectivation. The construction of knowledge establised among Watu Ulo residents on EWS results in: 1) public awareness; 2) public peacefulness despite being in a tsunami prone area. Abstract

Abstract The shift of conventional farmers in Wates Village to an organic farming system is a long process. The fairly long transition process is due to the different treatments of both conventional and organic farming systems. The difference is from seeding to harvesting process which requires special, different treatment from conventional farming. Various obstacles must be passed by farmers to switch to organic farming systems. This research focuses on the construction of knowledge of organic farming which makes the farmers switch towards organic farming systems. The research used the social construction theory of Petter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann that would examine the construction of knowledge about organic farming among farmers in Wates Village. The research used a constructivist approach. The informants were determined by purposive sampling. Furthermore, data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The results showed that the organic rice farmers in Wates village experienced a construction process through knowledge of farming systems. The knowledge was from a variety of sources including books, the Agricultural Extension Agency, and farmer groups. The role of governments, NGOs and civil society greatly helped the transition process towards organic farming systems among farmers in Wates Village. Objective reality and subjective reality were experienced by farmers in Wates Village in the transition process. Keywords: Construction, Science, Farmers, Organic Rice
