Abstract

The significant gap between the potential zakat collection of Rp327.6 trillion and the actual realization of Rp22.4 trillion challenges zakat management in Indonesia. Rp61.258 trillion in zakat funds remain unrecorded in the National Zakat Report (LZN) due to informal payments through mosques, Islamic boarding schools, or directly to recipients, leading to potential dishonesty and inequality. This study aims to identify the factors influencing the decision to pay zakat through official Zakat Management Organizations (OPZ) in Indonesia, comparing urban and rural muzakki. The research employs Structural Equation Modelling - Multigroup Analysis (SEM-MGA) using SmartPLS for data analysis. The subjects are 400 muzakki in Indonesia who have paid zakat through OPZ. The research findings indicate that trust and accessibility significantly and positively impact the decision to pay zakat through OPZ for both urban and rural muzakki. However, zakat knowledge and income do not influence rural muzakki decisions but have a positive effect on urban muzakki. The regional classification moderates the impact of accessibility on the decision to pay zakat through OPZ but does not moderate the influence of trust, zakat knowledge, and income. This research provides a comparative analysis of urban and rural muzakki, offering new insights into regional differences in zakat payment behavior. The findings of this study also provide practical implications for zakat institutions and policymakers in aligning zakat programs with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Poverty remains a significant challenge in many developing nations, including Indonesia. Poverty is also considered a problem caused by uneven economic growth. An effective approach to reducing poverty is through the equitable distribution of zakat, which can help narrow the disparity between the wealthy and those in need. Equitable distribution of zakat can be done by determining the level and potential of poverty in each province in Indonesia. To find out the poverty potential in each province in Indonesia, it is necessary to conduct a cluster analysis by looking at several poverty and economic growth variables. Cluster analysis is an analytical method employed to classify similar objects or individuals based on multiple criteria. Cluster analysis specifically used is k-means clustering which divides provinces in Indonesia into groups by identifying any similarities in the economic growth variables of each province. This analysis aims to categorize provinces in Indonesia based on economic conditions and levels, thereby assisting the government and zakat institutions in the effective distribution of zakat.

Abstract

The declining levels of zakat and waqf literacy among Generation Z pose a challenge to the development of Islamic philanthropy in Indonesia. Conventional educational methods have not been effective in enhancing this generation's understanding of zakat and waqf concepts. Therefore, research is needed to analyze the effectiveness of using digital comics as a strategy to increase zakat and waqf literacy among Generation Z. This study aims to measure the improvement in Generation Z's understanding of zakat and waqf after exposure to digital comics, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of this medium as a learning tool. The research employs an experimental method with pre-test and post-test, involving a sample of 96 Generation Z respondents. The results show a significant increase occurred in zakat and waqf literacy scores, with an average increase of 35.2% from pre-test to post-test. A total of 91.67% of respondents experienced an increase in scores; this finding implies that digital comics have the potential to be an effective medium. However, this finding must be interpreted with caution given the single-group research design used and the measurement focusing only on short-term retention. Further analysis reveals that digital comics are effective in presenting complex information, aligning with Generation Z's preferences, and enhancing learning enthusiasm. This study also demonstrates that the use of digital comics successfully narrows the comprehension gap among respondents, reflecting flexibility towards various initial levels of understanding and different learning styles.

Abstract

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world. With this growth, many new mosques have emerged, but their financial and social performance has not necessarily kept pace. Nowadays, many mosques prioritize saving money for construction and restoration, even when the mosque has already been completed. Moreover, there are many poor people living in the surrounding areas of these mosques. This implies that mosques often lack effective financial management and do not provide the expected spiritual, social, and economic benefits to their communities. This study finds opportunities and potentials of idle money amounting to IDR 1 trillion per month or approximately IDR 12 trillion per year in Indonesian mosques. Some factors that affect the presence of idle money in mosques are: ongoing or planned mosque restoration projects, the absence of clear work programs, a prevailing belief that a mosque’s success is measured by the size of its savings, and the tendency to save for future operational or emergency needs.

Abstract

Adequate competencies of zakat officers (amil) significantly impact the overall effectiveness of zakat programs. This study aims to examine the implementation of Islamic Competency-Based Human Resource Management (ICBHRM) in zakat institutions, focusing on identifying key competency dimensions of zakat officers that support professionalism in zakat management. The method employed is a literature review through a systematic analysis of relevant studies from journals, books, and conference papers. Data were collected from academic sources such as Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. The findings suggest that technical, personal, and social competencies serve as the core pillars supporting the professional performance of zakat officers. These competencies play a crucial role in ensuring effective and accountable zakat management. Technical competencies include a deep understanding of zakat jurisprudence, management, and sharia accounting. Meanwhile, personal and social competencies encompass integrity, trustworthiness, and strong interpersonal skills. Zakat officer certification is also considered vital in enhancing the quality of zakat officer performance and the accountability of zakat institutions. This study concludes that implementing ICBHRM in zakat institutions can significantly improve the professionalism and efficiency of zakat management, mainly through applying the core competencies outlined in the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) and leadership competencies, such as the ability to influence others, develop talent, and provide clear guidance. The discussion of these findings suggests the importance of continuous development through training and certification to ensure zakat officers can compete and adapt to modern management standards without compromising Sharia principles.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of BAZNAS (Badan Amil Zakat Nasional) scholarship on the personal growth, academic stress and educational outcomes of recipients at AIU (Albukhary International University). A sample of BAZNAS AIU scholarship recipients was analyzed using regression analysis. Data were gathered through surveys, with 52 BAZNAS AIU recipients as respondents. The results showed that mentorship, provided as part of the scholarship program, has a significant positive impact on personal growth, with 12.8% of the variance explained by this factor. Financial support, however, does not have a statistically significant negative effect on academic stress, suggesting that other factors may play a role in managing students' pressures. Additionally, institutional collaboration between BAZNAS and AIU was found to significantly improve educational outcomes, accounting for 33,3% of the variance. The findings reveal that mentorship and institutional collaboration all play significant roles in influencing personal growth and educational outcomes. However, financial support has a negative effect on academic stress, highlighting the need for comprehensive support mechanisms beyond financial aid.

Abstract

The diversity of methods used to distribute zakat is a new challenge that every institution must face. Generational differences in utilizing online zakat platforms reflect technological advancements. For example, Generation Z tends to trust technology more and feels comfortable with cashless transactions, as evidenced by their dominant presence in online zakat contributions. This study aims to identify the factors influencing generational digital behavior in fulfilling Zakat, Infak, and Sedekah (ZIS) obligations and analyze generational differences in zakat behavior through online and offline channels by examining zakat preferences across generations. Consequently, the most effective strategies to encourage active participation in digital philanthropic activities for each generation can be determined. Using a questionnaire involving 200 respondents from various generations who actively use social media, data collection and analysis were carried out using a simple random sampling technique, the statistical method ANCOVA, and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify factors influencing individuals in paying zakat. The findings indicate that generational differences do not have a significant impact. Based on the ANCOVA test, the p-value for the generational variable was 0.302. Meanwhile, the p-value for the education variable was 0.007, with a sum of squares value of 2.018, indicating that education significantly influences the intensity of paying zakat.

Abstract

Zakat, as one of the five pillars of Islam, carries profound implications not only for economic justice but also for mental and spiritual well-being. This paper explores the interconnection between zakat and mental health through the lens of Islamic values in modern society. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and library research method, data were gathered from Qur’anic verses, hadith, classical fiqh literature, and contemporary journal articles related to Islamic psychology, spirituality, and social welfare. Thematic analysis was employed to identify how zakat contributes to psychological stability, emotional resilience, and social harmony. The findings reveal that zakat functions as both a spiritual and psychosocial mechanism. For muzakki (zakat givers), it purifies the soul from greed, nurtures gratitude, and fosters happiness through altruistic behavior. For mustahik (zakat recipients), it alleviates economic stress, restores dignity, and strengthens hope — all of which are essential components of mental health. Furthermore, zakat builds social solidarity and reduces feelings of isolation by promoting empathy and collective responsibility. The study concludes that zakat reflects a holistic model of well-being that integrates faith, emotion, and social ethics, providing a sustainable framework for mental health promotion in Muslim communities. When managed effectively, zakat institutions such as BAZNAS can serve as faith-based mental health systems that support both individual and societal resilience in facing modern psychological challenges.

Abstract

The digital era continues to innovate to provide new breakthroughs in the world of technology. The number of social media platforms in fact makes people increasingly curious about using them, one of which is the TikTok application. In fact, Indonesia is listed as the largest Tiktok user in the world with 157, 6 users. This certainly attracts the interest of various groups, especially marketing media. Currently, there are many social media that can be used not only as entertainment but also as a place to raise donations. This study investigates young people's behavioral intentions in making decisions to donate through the TikTok platform. Not only that, this can be used by institutions as a reference in developing donation collection to be more optimal, especially on the TikTok platform. This research uses a qualitative method obtained through distributing questionnaires dominated by young people. From these results, it can be analyzed that many young people's decisions to donate online are due to the emotional influence that exists in themselves to contribute to donations. It is hoped that this research can help improve zakat institutions in reaching donations using TikTok and increase the contribution of young people to participate in social care to achieve mutual prosperity
