Abstract

This study is a need analysis of the development of sketch module for secondary D&T students. This study is in a form of a survey using questionnaire as a research instrument. A total of 287 teachers were involved in the study sample. The study sample was randomly selected. The data were analyzed using a descriptive analysis to meet the objectives of the study. The findings show that teachers are facing difficulties in implementing D&T teaching in schools. The majority of teaching teachers consist of non-option D&T teachers, lack of D&T knowledge and skills, intensive course requirements, less teaching aids and less conducive workshops. Students found that it was difficult to master topics that the teachers teach, especially the topic of sketching. The majority of teachers agree that the topic of sketching ought to be developed in a way to enhance students understanding, and along with helping the less skilled teachers. The implication of the study is that this module can be used by D&T teachers and students as a reference to improve the teaching and learning to become more effective.

Abstract

The call for continuous creation of industrial and technological workforce cannot be overlooked, in view of the fact that it will boost the sustainable industrial and technological development of any nation. A vital programme that can bring into being requisite workforce for sustainable industrial and technological development is Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). To this end, this study investigated the strategies for sprouting sustainable industrial and technological workforce through TVET in Nigeria using the descriptive survey research design. The study was guided with two research questions and two hypotheses. The sample was made up of 300 respondents comprising of 154 TVET Lecturers from Universities and 146 TVET industry-based workers in South-South Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria, who were selected using simple random and convenience sampling techniques respectively. The instrument used for data collection was a 69-item questionnaire which was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Cronbach Alpha and a reliability coefficient of .86 was obtained. Mean and standard deviations statistics were used to answer the research questions, whereas t-test statistic was used to test the null hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The findings of this study revealed that TVET programmes had some policy-related challenges; and TVET institutions-workplace collaboration is a possible strategy for sprouting sustainable industrial and technological workforce in Nigeria. Thus, among others, it was recommended that firm TVET policy document be set-up by government and all stakeholders to appropriately synchronize TVET programmes towards sprouting sustainable industrial and technological workforce in Nigeria.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the effects of phosphate solubilizers and biochar on growth and yield of tomato plants. For this purpose, a 4×3 factorial experiment based on Completely Randomized Block Design (RCBD) with 4 replications were conducted in the growth room. In this factorial experiment, 4 levels of phosphate solubilizer bacteria (B1, B2, Bmix and Control) and 3 levels of biochar (Powder, Large Size, and Control) were applied on tomato plants to identify changes in growth parameters and yield. Results were analysed using Genstat Statistical Package (16th Edition). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were conducted to test the effects of each factor and their interactions. Subsequently, Tukey test was used to compare the treatments means at P<0.05. The results showed that phosphate solubilizers had no significant effects on the growth parameters measured, while biochar treatments significantly affected the total fresh weight of the tomatoes and increased the speed of plant growth in tomatoes (Flowering and fruiting). In addition, there was no interaction between bacterial inoculation and biochar application on the parameters studied. The bacterial inoculation did not significantly affect any parameters studies. This is contrasted by the results from the treatments with biochar application which showed the enhancement of plant growth and yield. The sustainability of the bacterial strains used are suggested to be tested before starting the experiment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the implementation of dual system education at SMK Muhammadiyah Wanareja, a vocational high school (VHS) in Central Java, Indonesia, starting from the preparation stage to the implementation and the obstacles faced and the solutions implemented. The method in this study used a descriptive qualitative technique with data collection, documentation, and observation. The data analysis technique uses the interactive techniques of Milles and Hubberman with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Test the validity and reliability of the data using the source triangulation technique. Respondents in this study were the vice principal of public relations affairs, teachers, students, and leaders or trainers from the industry. The results of the study show that the dual system education implemented is going well even though there are some obstacles in its implementation. Industrial work practice activities are carried out for the full six months and based on the results of competency tests carried out by the school after the industrial work practice activities. Data is obtained that students have competencies by following the expertise program and the competency grid determined by the school. Both institutions face obstacles in the implementation of dual system education. The obstacles faced by schools are the non-implementation of learning normative and adaptive subjects planned with online systems, the limited means of learning vocational and workforce practices. The obstacles faced by the industry are with single instructors and the number of participants in industrial work practices and implementation that are different from each school. Solutions implemented by schools related to normative and adaptive learning during the implementation of industrial work practices, schools conduct material enrichment for one month with a block system.
