JLA (Jurnal Lingua Applicata) is an academic journal in Indonesian published by the Departemen Bahasa Seni dan Manajemen Budaya (DBSMB), Sekolah Vokasi UGM, which manages several Diploma majors in foreign languages. JLA accepts scientific articles in the field of study in applied foreign languages, especially in English, Japanese, Mandarin, and Korean. JLA aims to provide comprehensive knowledge of the applicative aspects of foreign languages in its real-life practice, especially in academic and workspace settings. JLA is issued twice a year, in the first and second semester.

Abstract

Language teaching in the 21st century should accommodate various skills that must be acquired by the students which include skills to analyze and solve problems, create and innovate, think critically, collaborate, and communicate. Language teachers should also integrate information and communication technology in the learning process to improve the quality of learning instruction and help to reach those learning goals. Addressing these challenges, teachers as well as teacher candidates need to develop their qualities and keep updating their knowledge. Teaching training program in the university therefore offer courses and programs to improve the competence and skills of the teacher candidates. English Program of Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada also offer similar training although it is not extensively implemented since it only covers the introductory foundation for language teaching.  Nevertheless, the students successfully demonstrate their teaching potentials and self-actualize themselves as teachers. The results of questionnaire, observation, and reflection show that the teacher candidates actualize their potentials as decision maker, designer, manager, learning facilitator, motivator, as well as creative, reflective, technology-literate, self-efficacious, and communicative teacher.

Abstract

This article aims at describing the test item making process in developing OLIVE, Online Listening for Individual Practice. OLIVE is a combination of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) and ICT (Information Communication Technology), which is an e-learning format. It is a web application prepared by Sekolah Vokasi Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta to enhance listening skill for non-English major students. OLIVE provides supplementary listening materials in the form of test which can be self-accessed online outside the classroom. There are four parts of the listening practice served in OLIVE; Short Conversation, Question-Response, Longer Conversation, and Talks. Meanwhile, the process of the test making includes design, operationalization, and administration.

Abstract

The research aims to identify obstacles and possible challenges in deploying project based learning as learning method for translation course in vocational education.  Given that vocational education should shorten the gap between well-equipped skill of graduate with labor market demand, each courses offered are obliged to ensure that skill delivered in the course are practically in line with labor demand and are ready to use, including translation courses. The research adopted qualitative approach and putting case study method completed by interview and survey as method of data collection. The interview was intended to dig the faculty’s experience in facilitating translation courses in class within last one year period, particularly on its challenges and obstacles. Meantime, the survey was designed to absorb the learner’s perception and opinion towards the advantages of project based learning implementation. The respondent involved in the research are students of English program Vocational College Universitas Gadjah Mada who already taken translation 1 and 2 courses. Next,   The data are descriptively presented along with related supporting figures and tables. The research reveals that in the context of vocational education, translation teaching using project based learning offers a lot of advanteges to the students particularly in equipping them with proper undersntading on conceptual knowledge and its practical implementation in work place. However, its implementation hit some obstacles which could be derived as follow 1. Lack or time preparation and length of time to conduct the team project, 2. Lack of lecturer’s experience in delivering PBL in class.

Abstract

Mandarin is widely needed in Indonesia nowadays. It is used in many fields, like in service, tourism, education, marine, and journalism industry. Practical Mandarin is definitely required in the working world, for example Mandarin for housekeeping in cruise ship communication. Manpower with additional abilities and skills such as foreign language mastery would improve their competence in the competitive working world. In addition to increasing competencies of the prospective workers, it is also important to provide the best service for the guests. This research will present practical Mandarin teaching methods that can be applied to prospective workers in housekeeping cruise filed. The methods used in this research are library research, field study, and interview.

Abstract

Learning method is one of the important aspects to reach the aim of learning. In foreign language learning, especially in Japanese, various method is needed in order to improve the student’s skill and also give chance to the students to be more active in learning Japanese. This paper aims to explore the impact of various method used in Japanese learning in Vocational College, UGM. Based on the research, there are several impact on various method use to the student’s learning outcome. First, the students become more active in learning and show their opinions. Second, various method build the student’s self-reliance, and third, improving the student’s skill of communication, especially in Japanese.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety becomes one of the toughest barriers in EFL learning. In the meantime, speaking competence is paramount for vocational graduates at job market. Therefore, big and continuous efforts must be done to maximize the learning outcome. This paper aims to examine how active and guided peer mentoring among learners can actually decrease anxiety of vocationa learners. For the purpose, qualitative research employing a case study design involving fourteen participants of vocational learners taking Speaking II was conducted. Stages including peer mentor screening, peer mentor preparation for guidance, peer mentoring activities, peer mentoring monitoring were applied. Responses from Focus Group Discussions (FGD) among mentors and participants being mentored were collected and analyzed afterwards. Recommendations were also made from best practices generated.
