Abstract

Metaphor was figurative expression, the transferred sense of physical word, the personification of an abstraction, the application of a word or collocation to what it did not literally denote to describe one thing in terms of another. Metaphor could be found in many media like newspapers, magazines, novels, etc. In this research the researcher indentified the metaphor and described meaning of metaphor in The Other Hands Novel.The data in this research were the sentence that contained metaphor in The Other Hands Novel. This research was done by analyzing the data qualitatively. There was some steps to analyze the data they were: Identifing the sentences in The Other Hands novel, analyzing the metaphors in the sentences to identify the components of metaphor. The researcher defined the source domain and the target domain and analyzed the metaphors in the sentences to find out the literal and non-literal meaning of the metaphor.The findings of the analysis reveal that there were eighteens data of meaning in metaphors found by researcher. The researcher expected the next researchers to do the analysis on metaphors with other object of research. The researcher also expected the next researchers to identify metaphors with different relevant theories.

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to (1) describe the types of conflicts of the main characters in short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, (2) describe the effects of conflicts of the main characters in short stories by Edgar Allan Poe. The researcher used theory by Nurgiyantoro (2002). There are two types of conflicts, internal conflict and external conflict. He divides the external conflict into social conflict and physical conflict. The data source were short stories by Edgar Allan Poe they were: (1) The Tell-Tale Heart (2017), (2) The Black Cat (2017), and (3) The Hop Frog (1849). The data in this study were in the form of main character’s dialogues or utterances, and behavior in the three short stories. Techniques of data analysis done were data reduction, data display, and data conclusion drawing and verification by Miles and Huberman’s theory (1984). The researcher found sixteen data from three short stories by Edgar Allan Poe, there were four data from The Tell-Tale Heart, ten data from The Black Cat, and two data from The Hop Frog, and the details are : Six data of internal conflicts, five data of social conflicts, and five data of physical conflicts. Then, the details of the results on the affects experienced by the main characters are : One datum of positive affect (enjoyment or joy, interest or excitement, and surprise or startle), and fifteen data of negative affect (anger or range, disgust, dissmell, distress or anguish, fear or terror, and shame or humiliation). The researcher expects the next researchers to study concept of conflict analysis or main character in different subjects.

Abstract

Language has a vital function in many different aspects such as social, military, economic, and even politics. Advertisement functions as media of promotion in transferring particular message from advertisers as the addressors to consumers as a target of the advertisement. The messages are meant to persuade consumers or people to choose a certain political party promoting its vision and mission. In addition, an advertisement covers all aspects of life as displayed in newspaper, television, direct mail, radio, magazines, internet and billboards.mIn this case, people can build a social community and use language as a means of delivering messages. This discusses one of the elements of political field as a subject matter of the discussion, the advertisements of political party in particular. In making advertisement, the political parties have to be creative in order to attract people‘s attention. With reference to the discussion of this research, the writer analyzes the advertisements of political parties major mass media.

Abstract

This research was about commissive acts uttered by characters and the aims behind the use of commissive acts in The Hunger Games : Mockingjay Part 2 movie. In conversation, commissive acts are threatening, promissing, vowing, refusing, etc. The research data was in the form of utterances that contained commissive acts uttered by the characters in the movie. To analyze the data, the researcher used Spradley’s theory (1998) which covered : data analysis; domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural value. This research was conducted by accomodating two theories: Levinson (1983) in analyzing commissive acts and Searle & Vanderveken (1985) in analyzing the aims of commissive acts. The result of the research showed that the were twenty five data that indicated as the relevant data. From the data, the researcher found five aims behind the use of commissive acts in the movie; they were planning, refusing, offering, promising, and threatening. The most dominant aim behind the use of commissive acts were planning (ten data) and promissing (seven data) while the least dominant were refusing (four data), offering ( two data), and threatening (two data).

Abstract

Literature teaching at school is aied to give the basic of literary awareness to the students, so they can learn to love and appreciate literature well based on the literary rules they have got. One example of literary works is shortstory.we can teach students short story in listening class. However, their literary competence is found out to be low. Therefore, the teacher proposed TGT method to improve students’ literary competence. The results reveals that working activities during listening show students’ positive appreciation to literature. However, the teacher should have more give attention to the aspects of short story.

Abstract

The research applied psychoanalysis and psychological approaches to analyze Christian’s sexual deviation in Fifty Shades movies. This research used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The research aimed at analyzing the causes of Christian’s sexual deviation and the personality impact of his sexual deviation. The objects of this research were the first and second movies of Fifty Shades trilogy, they were Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. The data of this research were taken from Christian’s dialogues, utterances, and actions related to the topic of this research. The findings of this research showed that Christian had sexual deviation related to sadistic things from his traumatic experience. Christian also had personality disorders as the impact of his sexual deviation. Christian had three personality disorders: histrionic, obsessive-compulsive, and narcissistic personalities.

Abstract

This research is purposed to analyze the structure groups of hegemony and the types of hegemony that happen in Zootopia movie. This research was done using qualitative method. The data were gained by watching the movie, paying attention to the statement and conversation and then analyzed the structures group and the types of hegemony. The data were analyzed by; data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing based on Miles and Huberman‟s theory. The findings of this research reveal that there are two structure gorups of hegemony in Zootopia movie. The first is dominant group that have two parts, civil society and the state. The civil society in Zootopia is the common citizen who did the hegemony toward the weak characters. The state is people who living under system of government who has a power to do hegemony toward the civil society. The second is the subordinate group, the group that dominated by the dominant group. This research also reveals that hegemony in Zootopia movie has two types; coercive control and consensual control. In coercive control, the dominant force the subordinate group to agree and follow their rule while in the consensual control, the dominant influence the subordinate group by their thought to make them follow their rule. In Zootopia movie, coercive power is the dominant and commonly used by the charaters.
