IJOLTL invites original manuscripts in the fields of language, language teaching, linguistics, and applied linguistics. Although articles are written in English, the IJOLTL welcomes studies dealing with the teaching of languages other than English as well. Research on culture of various perspectives as well as linguistics is also welcome. In addition, IJOLTL also considers papers in the areas of applied linguistics, language testing, pragmatic, sociolinguistics and discourse analysis. Reviews of literature are also acceptable for the IJOLTL. The length of paper should be between 3,500 to 8,000 words as defined in the author’s guidelines.

Abstract

This paper discusses reflection of ESP class instructional management for Agro Technology and Agribusiness studies at the Faculty of Agriculture, Balitar Islamic University. The instructional management comprises analysis of students’ needs, competence and behavior, instructional preparation, instructional intervention using a combined pedagogical and instructional leadership approach, and instructional evaluation.  This research was a  reflective approach towards instructional practices. The study found out that instructional processes, the combined students centered task-based approach of language teaching and situational leadership approach,  have resulted excellent achievement. Students successfully translated English texts to acceptable Indonesian conversion and worked out for producing final paper work of scientific articles and books transliteration. The combination of pedagogical and leadership approach in instructional management has satisfied the aims of ESP teaching for the Agro Technology and Agribusiness studies.

Abstract

 This research developed English Instructional materials for character building based on 2013 Curriculum. The research was carried out in a class of 8th graders of SMP Darul Falah Blitar.  The 23 students were involved in this research in the phase of obtaining information, needs analysis and trying out. The result of needs analysis became the basis of how the researcher composed the English instructional materials with Scientific Approach, official approach of 2013 Curriculum. In the product, an English textbook, the four skills are balance improved; listening, speaking, reading and writing. All of the materials are appropriate with 2013 Curriculum and the contents refer to students’ character building. The materials are for a year of 8th grade which are packaged into seven units. All the steps of learning and exercises in the materials are based on Scientific Approach which has five steps: observing, associating, experimenting, associating and communicating.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to see the meaning of metaphors in traditional ceremony in Lodoyo named Kiyai Pradah. This study  was ethnography that used qualitative approach. The focus of this study was metaphors identified from the Javanese mantras used for ritual ceremony of Kiyai Pradah in Lodoyo, Blitar. The metaphors were analyzed their literal symbols and their intended meaning based on the Javanese culture. Data were analyzed using category of methapors and interpreting the symbols into the intended meaning.  This study concludes that metaphors used in Javanese mantras of Kiyai Pradah ritual consist of 20 kinds. The metaphors are categories into (1) complimentary metaphors, (2) predicative metaphors, and (3) sentential metaphors. The metaphors represent the Javanese teaching values that put respects and harmony among human beings, the ancestors, and God.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the use of indirect request in women’s language. This research used qualitative method and library research. Data were collected using grounded theories of indirect request for referents. The researcher put the theory of Indirect Requests into a movie because there would be so many conditions in the movie which can be explored by the theory. Besides, whether this theory is really being conscious or not by the masses, it is always used in daily conversation. The result of this research indicated that requests have intended meanings that are different from their literal meanings, and hearers recognize their real meaning based on the context. Using indirect request the speaker wants to be understood and the addressee wants to understand.

Abstract

 This study aimed to describe characteristics of reading passages in the English textbook for SMP in Samarinda published by CV Nadia Sarana Utama.  The study used content analysis as the design.  The data of this study were 11 reading passages in the English textbook.  The reading passages were evaluated based on topic, organization, grammatical features, cohesion and cohesive devices of the text, and vocabulary choices.  The study revealed that the topics of the reading text were not clear.  Of 11 passages available, 3 do not have topic, 2 do not state relevant topic, and 6 has relevant topic.  Cohesion and cohesive of the texts were achieved by reference and the conjunction (text 1 to text 11), substitution (texts 4, 6, and 10) and lexical cohesion (texts 4, 7, and 10). Grammatical features of the 11 texts are simple and compound sentence. Vocabulary texts are everyday language.
