Abstract

Background: Children from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Indonesia have been facing challenges in terms of their literacy and language development. One of the possible reasons is that they are not used to receiving meaningful early reading interventions such as shared reading during their pre-school attendance. This phenomenon has brought to light the urgency of having an early intervention, which can accommodate the very diverse linguistic and cultural context of Indonesia- a multilingual and multicultural country. Methodology: This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method research design. The first phase was conducted in a quantitative one-group pre-experiment with pre-and post-test design. The second phase of this research was carried out in a qualitative case study through classroom observation and informal interviews with the teacher and the children. Findings: The findings of MLU calculation showed that for the pre-test, the mean score was 2.35, the median was 2.20 and the standard deviation was 0.53. Meanwhile, for the post-test, the mean score was 3.72, the median was 3.18 and the standard deviation was 1.38. The qualitative phase explored two main aspects, namely the implementation of dialogic reading activity by the teacher and the teacher as well as children’s opinions regarding the dialogic reading activity. Conclusion: This current study has offered an insight that dialogic reading activity could be well implemented by the teacher in a typical Indonesian pre-school setting. The dialogic reading activity was also found to contribute significantly to the development of children’s expressive language ability. Originality: The findings of this study have indicated dialogic reading potentials in terms of promoting children’s language development and just as importantly, sparking children’s joy of reading since their early years of formal education. Therefore, it is suggested that early childhood educators and parents work hand in hand to incorporate dialogic reading activity into their daily literacy practices at schools as well as at home.

Abstract

Language anxiety and language motivation have been an important area for empirical research and theoretical work within the context of second and foreign language. Thus, exploring the relationship between language motivation and language anxiety and their combined effects on the EFL achievement will help language teachers and researchers to clarify the role of these two variables in language pedagogy. The present study aims at finding out the broad profiles of the students’ foreign language anxiety and learning motivation and the relationship between foreign language anxiety and learning motivation. The correlational study was used to find out the relationship between variables. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and English Learning Motivation Scale (ELMS) were used to collect the required data. The students’ achievement was represented by using the mid-test score. The result indicated that the participants have high level of English achievement (62.26) despite their low English learning motivation (40.08) and medium level of foreign language anxiety (47.25). The Pearson Product Moment Correlation shows that results from the correlation-based analysis demonstrated significant relationships among all variables.

Abstract

This study compares gender representations in three different English textbooks from three publishers used by Indonesian Junior High School students (the Indonesian government, an Indonesian private publisher, and an International publisher). Under Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the study specifically investigated males’ and females’ representations and the typical activities associated with both genders. Overall, the results showed that males dominated all the textbooks, visually and textually. Besides that, the analysis revealed that females still have lower representations, less variation in occupations, and feminine specialization in doing the household chores in two textbooks. However, positive representations and stereotypes also appear in the textbooks, such as neutral generic constructions and typical activities by both genders.

Abstract

In human society, the need for interpersonal connection has given rise to the emergence of language. Beyond serving as a medium of communication, language functions as a vehicle for articulating emotions and conveying thoughts, with its use shaped by contextual and situational factors. This research seeks to examine the language styles engaged by students of the English Education Department at Mulawarman University, using Martin Joos’ (1976) theory and Holmes (2013) as sociolinguistic theory. The study investigates the categories of language styles used in students' speech and the factors influencing their choice of style. A qualitative method was applied, utilizing data from a recorded video interview and follow-up semi-structured interviews with two selected participants. Data analysis was undertaken using thematic analysis guided by Braun and Clarke (2006) framework. The findings reveal that three out of five language styles formulated by Joos—consultative, casual, and intimate—were used by the participants, with consultative style being the most dominant. Language style occurred primarily in academic contexts, especially when interacting with instructors or unfamiliar individuals. Factors influencing language style include the speaker, setting, topic, and function, in alignment with Holmes’ (1992) sociolinguistic theory. Furthermore, although participants often identified their style as “formal,” triangulation with Joos’ and Braund and Clarke theory revealed that their usage aligned as consultative features. These findings provide valuable insights into how language styles function in educational settings and highlight the importance of context in language use.
