This study is to know the use of Story Grammar strategy to improve reading skill at eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. The design of the study is classroom action research. The researcher played two roles in this research; as a teacher and a researcher. During implementing the strategy in the classroom, the researcher was accompanied by teacher partner. This research was conducted in one cycle, which was divided into four main activities; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The reflection was based on the findings during the observation and compared with criteria of success including: (1) students’ average score is 60 (passing grade for English lesson), and (2) students can participate actively in the class. The research findings showed that this strategy was effective to teach reading comprehension at eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Giri. It was indicated on the students’ average score of post test. The students’ average score in the pretest was 37. After applying Story Grammar strategy the score improved in the post test. The students’ average score in the post was 70,28. The improvement was also shown in the students’ performances in the class. In the first meeting, some students could not join the activity in the classroom well. Day by day, students performed increased during teaching learning process until the fourth meeting. They showed their motivation and participation well. Finally, it can be concluded that Story Grammar strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension skill. The researcher suggests for English teachers especially in teaching speaking to use Story Grammar strategy. This study employed Research and Development design and Asmara’s ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) model. 21 senior students of English language education department at University of Muhammadiyah Gresik who have passed translation course were involved in the study. The need analysis data were gathered through questionnaire. The result of the questionnaire was considered in creating the material, which is developed following Harmer’s ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) approach. The need analysis results reveal that the students need the material which focuses on enhancing translation skills and enriching vocabulary as well as provides basic information about business letters as the topic of the material. From the result of expert validation and questionnaire after try-out, some adjustments are made to the material. The adjustments are presenting more explanation of business letters material, adding more vocabularies, giving some pictures, and providing conclusion at the end of each chapter. To conclude, the students need the material which focuses on not only skills enhancement, but also vocabulary enrichment. This study involved students who have passed translation course, expected to use their experience in translation learning to be considered in creating the material. Based on the results, the recommendations are given to English language education department students, translation lecturers, and future researchers to use both the data of the results and the product of this study effectively.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the significant effect of round robin summarizing in reading skill for 10th grade students at SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik in academic year of 2016/2017. In this research, the researcher used quantitative research and it refers to experimental research design because the purpose of the research is to investigate the effect of round robin summarizing on students’ reading comprehension. This research started during December, 2016. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik. Because the population is large the researcher decided to use cluster sampling technique to select two classes with the same ability. Two classes were taken as the sample of the research. Those are X-A as the experimental group and X-B as the control group. The data tested using t-test formula by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test from both of classes. The result of post-test score mean showed that experimental group was higher than control group. The post-test score mean of the experimental group was 58.67 while the control group was 53.12. The result of this study showed that probability value both of the groups was 0.000 (0.000 < 0.005). This result showed that the experimental group and the control group were different in their ability after giving treatment. So, the null hypothesis could be rejected. Then, the null hypothesis stated that there was significant different using round robin summarizing towards students’ reading comprehension between experiment and control groups. Based on the description above, the researcher found that there was significant different in reading comprehending between the students who were taught using round robin summarizing and who were taught without using round robin summarizing. Having known from the finding of the study, it was indicated that round robin summarizing significantly influence towards students’ reading comprehension of students at SMA Nahdlatul Ulama 2 Gresik. For further researcher, the researcher hopefully round robin summarizing can be used in different skill.

Abstract

In the special education, especially hearing impaired learner, the students also learn English, but the learners have the difficulty in learning English vocabulary. There are several reasons for the learners who have the difficulties in learning English vocabulary. One of the reason is because they have physical and mental weakness. Learners of SLB Negeri Cerme also have the difficulties of learning English vocabulary. To help the learners in learning better vocabulary, the researcher will use longtion autorun application to show the picture, text and translation. Longtion autorun application as the base material of learning vocabulary will help learners achieve better vocabularies, which will make the learners more interested and understand the material easily by using some pictures and exercises. The research and development design uses ADDIE instructional design model, to develop vocabulary material using Longtion autorun application for hearing impaired-eleventh grade learners at SLB Negeri Cerme. The research was conducted in SLB Negeri Cerme, involving three hearing impaired learners of eleventh grade. In this research and development, the steps are: need analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation. The need analysis gave some explanations; First, analysis of interviews with English teacher about the learning need, second, analysis of interviews with learners about their target need and learning need, third, curriculum document analysis. Researcher created a design instruction called material prototype as a framework that was used in developing syllabus and application. Researcher developed a material according to the result of need analysis and design. The activities of the learning are in three phases (pre, whilst, and post) Strategy. From the result of English teacher assessment, the score was 87,5. While the result of learner?s questionnaire about the product, the total score was 88,3. It belongs to the good category based on scoring. This second draft of material was considered as the final draft. The overall conclusion appears that the learners interested when they learnt English using Longtion autorun application because the materials were easy to understand, interesting, and suitable for eleventh grade hearing impaired learners. The researcher gives some recommendation, the next researcher could conduct the similar project to do the same research with different level and focus in order to enrich the variety of the research. For the teacher, this product could be used as a combination when they teach English to introduce the simple English vocabulary to the learners.
