Abstract

The increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into power grid makes it significant to forecast solar irradiance for power system planning. With the advent of deep learning techniques, it is possible to forecast solar irradiance accurately for a longer time. In this paper, day-ahead solar irradiance is forecasted using encoder-decoder sequence-to-sequence models with attention mechanism. This study formulates the problem as structured multivariate forecasting and comprehensive experiments are made with the data collected from National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). Two error metrics are adopted to measure the errors of encoder-decoder sequence-to-sequence model and compared with smart persistence (SP), back propagation neural network (BPNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), long short term memory (LSTM) and encoder-decoder sequence-to-sequence LSTM with attention mechanism (Enc-Dec-LSTM). Compared with SP, BPNN and RNN, Enc-Dec-LSTM is more accurate and has reduced forecast error of 31.1%, 19.3% and 8.5% respectively for day-ahead solar irradiance forecast with 31.07% as forecast skill.

Abstract

In this article, an improvement to the positive output super-lift Luo converter (POSLC) has been proposed to get high gain at a low duty cycle. Also, reduce the stress on the switch and diodes, reduce the current through the inductors to reduce loss, and increase efficiency. Using a hybrid switch unit composed of four inductors and two capacitors it is replaced by the main inductor in the elementary circuit. It’s charged in parallel with the same input voltage and discharged in series. The output voltage is increased according to the number of components. The gain equation is modeled. The boundary condition between Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) has been derived. Passive components are designed to get high output voltage (8 times at D=0.5) and low ripple about (0.004). The circuit is simulated and analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. Maximum power point tracker (MPPT) controls the converter to provide the most interest from solar energy.

Abstract

Condition monitoring of distribution and power transformers is of utmost importance to utilities due to cost effectiveness concerns. The common faults that occur in transformers are short circuits and winding deformation. To date, there are many established test methods used to detect these faults. In this study, three test methods (insulation resistance (IR), transformer turn ratio (TTR), and frequency response analysis (FRA)) were compared to assess their effectiveness in detecting short circuit and winding deformation in a three-phase transformer. Based on the results, the three test methods were found to be capable of detecting short circuits. However, only TTR and FRA can detect winding deformation, and FRA can further indicate which phase is faulty. Therefore, it is concluded that FRA is more effective in detecting short circuit and winding deformation of a three-phase transformer.

Abstract

A new design of binary parallel adder circuit is presented in this paper. The pipeline technique is applied to implement a group of a half adder (HA) blocks to architect the proposed adder. The pipelined carry adder (PCA) method is suitable for carrying out the desired adder by using the HA circuits of XOR and AND gates. The applied technique reduces the critical path delay by 27% compared with the ripple carry adder (RCA) and relatively lowers logic gates by 55% compared with the carry look-ahead adder (CLA). The coded design of the proposed circuit is implemented and simulated on the Cyclone IV FPGA kit platform. Results show that the circuit needs a 7.69 ƞ Sec delay time to provide the output values. The suggested PCA circuit is more attractive than the conventional ripple carry adder for future electronic applications.

Abstract

The genetic algorithm (GA) is an adaptive metaheuristic search method based on the process of evolution and natural selection theory. It is an efficient algorithm used for solving the combinatorial optimization problems, e.g., travel salesman problem (TSP), linear ordering problem (LOP), and job-shop scheduling problem (JSP). The simple GA applied takes a long time to reach the optimal solution, the configuration of the GA parameters is vital for a successful GA search and convergence to optimal solutions, it includes population size, crossover operator, and mutation operator rates. Also, very recently, many research papers involved the GA in coding theory, In particular, in the decoding linear block codes case, which has heavily contributed to reducing the complexity, and guaranting the convergence of searching in fewer iterations. In this paper, an efficient method based on the genetic algorithm is proposed, and it is used for computing the Automorphisms groups of low density parity check (LDPC) codes, the results of the aforementioned method show a significant efficiency in finding an important set of Automorphisms set of LDPC codes.

Abstract

Humans can perform an enormous number of actions like running, walking, pushing, and punching, and can perform them in multiple ways. Hence recognizing a human action from a video is a challenging task. In a supervised learning environment, actions are first represented using robust features and then a classifier is trained for classification. The selection of a classifier does affect the performance of human action recognition. This work focuses on the comparison of two structures of the neural network, namely, feed forward neural network and cascade forward neural network, for human action recognition. Histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) and histogram of optical flow (HOF) are used as features for representing the actions. HOG represents the spatial features of the video while HOF gives motion features of the video. The performance of two neural network architectures is compared based on recognition accuracy. Well-known publically available datasets for action and interaction detection are used for testing. It is seen that, for human action recognition applications, feed forward neural network gives better results in terms of higher recognition accuracy than Cascade forward neural network.

Abstract

Genetic algorithms (GAs) are dependent on various operators and parameters. The most common evolutionary operators are parent selection, crossover, and mutation. Each operator has broad implementations with its pros and cons. A successful GA is highly dependent on genetic diversity which is the main driving force that steers a GA towards an optimal solution. Mutation operator implements the idea of exploration to search for uncharted areas and introduces diversity in a population. Thus, increasing the probability of GA to converge to a globally optimum solution. In this paper, a new variant of mutation operator is proposed, and its functions are studied and compared with the existing operators. The proposed mutation operator as well as others such as m-mutation, shuffle, swap, and inverse are tested for their ability to introduce diversity in population and hence, their effects on the performance of GA. All these operators are applied to Max one problem. The results concluded that the proposed variant is far more superior to the existing operators in terms of introducing diversity and hence early convergence to an optimum solution.

Abstract

The purpose of distributed generation systems (DGS) is to enhance the distribution system (DS) performance to be better known with its benefits in the power sector as installing distributed generation (DG) units into the DS can introduce economic, environmental and technical benefits. Those benefits can be obtained if the DG units' site and size is properly determined. The aim of this paper is studying and reviewing the effect of connecting DG units in the DS on transmission efficiency, reactive power loss and voltage deviation in addition to the economical point of view and considering the interest and inflation rate. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is introduced to find the best solution to the distributed generation penetration problem in the DS. The result of WOA is compared with the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and grey wolf optimizer (GWO). The proposed solutions methodologies have been tested using MATLAB software on IEEE 33 standard bus system.

Abstract

Using a new key management system and Jacobian elliptic map, a new speech encryption scheme has been developed for secure speech communication data. Jacobian elliptic map-based speech encryption has been developed as a novel method to improve the existing speech encryption methods' drawbacks, such as poor quality in decrypted signals, residual intelligibility, high computational complexity, and low-key space. Using the Jacobian elliptic map as a key management solution, a new cryptosystem was created. The proposed scheme's performance is evaluated using spectrogram analysis, histogram analysis, key space analysis, correlation analysis, key sensitivity analysis and randomness test analysis. Using the results, we can conclude that the proposed speech encryption scheme provides a better security system with robust decryption quality.

Abstract

Technolgoical innovation has covered all aspects of business all over the world. With growing pace of digitalisation all over the globe, e-commerce has become one of the popular platforms for initiating business transactions. COVID-19 has showed the dependence of the society on this medium for the convenient allocation of goods and services and meeting up of consumer demands. Saudi Arabia has also witnessed a high demand in the usage of this platform to meet the daily usage necessity. In order to get insight into the topic, qualitative research has been undertaken. The study aims to investigate the increased use of e-commerce during COVID-19. The data required for the analysis has been collected from secondary sources such as web journals and research work. The finding of the qualitative analysis exhibited that the e-commerce has increased rapidly during COVID-19 time. The outcomes of the present study are helpful for the vendors to facilitate the consumers by increasing the opportunities of e-commerce.
