Abstract

The school bus is a means of transportation that is very attractive to students because it is free. This study aims to develope an application that can track school bus trips and provide information about bus passengers. Bus location information sent to the user application can help students estimate the arrival time of the school bus at the pick-up point. In addition, information on the identity of school bus passengers can be used by parents to monitor the whereabouts of their children going to or from school on the bus. This application uses the global positioning system (GPS) of the smartphone on the school bus to find out the location of the bus and send it along with passenger identification information to the user application. To read passenger identities, near field communication (NFC) cards are used as passenger identity cards by tapping them on a smartphone on a school bus. Tests have been carried out on all functions of the application features and testing the accuracy of location reading and tracking of school bus trips, obtained latitude and longitude tolerance values of about 3.2 meters.

Abstract

Studies have shown that high-voltage power transmission lines emit electromagnetic radiation, which has adverse effects on human health. This paper presents the effects of parameter adjustment on the electric and magnetic fields of an overhead power transmission line model at human height. A finite element software, COMSOL multiphysics, was used to simulate the electric and magnetic fields. The electric and magnetic fields generated by the 1200-kV and 220-kV overhead power transmission line models were first computed and the models were validated by comparing the simulation results with those of previous studies. Numbers of parameter were adjusted in order to investigate their effects on the electric and magnetic field distributions. Based on the results, the electric field intensity increases with an increase in the voltage of the conductors. The magnetic field density increases with an increase in the current carried by the conductors. A voltage of 700 kV results in an electricity field intensity that exceeds the residential safety limit (50 kV/m) set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. Hence, a proper right-of-way is needed to ensure that residential areas are at a safe distance away from transmission towers.

Abstract

Indoor positioning has become popular in this decade and is used to locate users or objects in indoor environments. This is because global positioning system (GPS) is not efficient for indoor use due to the multipath fading effect. This research is about development bluetooth low energy (BLE) indoor positioning system with the aid of long range (LoRa) network and guideline on selection of the BLE beacons. Next, positioning systems are developed consisting of BLE beacons, a transceiver of hybrid BLE-LoRa module, a LoRa receiver and Raspberry Pi as real-time monitoring. The received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and BLE Mac address from BLE beacons received via LoRa network are analyzed using the positioning algorithm designed in MATLAB. The positioning algorithm incorporates distance estimation, filter implementation and trilateration technique. The estimated location is analyzed with the root mean square error (RMSE) and cumulative distribution function (CDF). According to the results, implementing the filter reduces the positioning accuracy error, achieving 90% accuracy of positioning error less than 1.20 meters for the whole testbed. Finally, the algorithm is embedded into Raspberry Pi to view the location via desktop.

Abstract

Image quality plays a vital role in improving and assessing image compression performance. Image compression represents big image data to a new image with a smaller size suitable for storage and transmission. This paper aims to evaluate the implementation of the hybrid techniques-based tensor product mixed transform. Compression and quality metrics such as compression-ratio (CR), rate-distortion (RD), peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and Structural Content (SC) are utilized for evaluating the hybrid techniques. Then, a comparison between techniques is achieved according to these metrics to estimate the best technique. The main contribution is to improve the hybrid techniques. The proposed hybrid techniques are consisting of discrete wavelet transform (W), multi-wavelet transform (M), and tensor product mixed transform (T) as 1-level W, M, and T techniques. WT and MT are the 2-level techniques, while WWT, WMT, MWT, and MMT are the 3-level techniques. For each level of each technique, a reconstructed process is applied. The simulation results using MATLAB 2019a indicated that the MMT is the best technique with CR=1024, R(D)=4.154, and PSNR=81.9085. Also, it is faster than the other techniques in the previous works as compared with them. Further research might investigate whether this technique can benefit image and speech recognition.
