Abstract

Nowadays, the percentage of adolescents living in urban areas is increasing, including in Indonesia. Unfortunately, urban planning and design are very limited in involving the perspective of youth, including the provision of safe public space. This paper is concerned with understanding safe public spaces from the perspective of adolescent girls. This paper aims to explore whether the neighborhood, specifically its public spaces, according to the girls' perspective is safe enough by using a case study approach with the case of a dense organic neighborhood in the city of Yogyakarta, Kampong Code. The information was obtained by observation, forum group discussion (FGD), and also by conducting a safety walk with local adolescent girls. This paper found that although from a normative perspective, public spaces in the neighborhood are considered as not safe enough, because they were familiar with this condition, they tend to perceive that as a usual situation.

Abstract

Reservoir tourism is tourism that is widely associated with activities in water, such as lakes and rivers which are managed in an integrated and planned manner, so that they are ready to receive tourist visits. So far, the existence of reservoir tourism which is unique has not been handled and managed optimally. This trend can be seen in several reservoir areas that have lost their original character, and have even disappeared and changed their function due to neglect. Among them is the Cengklik Reservoir. So one of the initial measures is to identify the potential for reservoir tourism areas to be developed through the Eco-Waterfront Architecture Approach by paying attention to the surrounding natural environment and the function of the area. The purpose of this research is to formulate a tourism development strategy through the Eco-Waterfront Architecture approach. The formulation is based on the exploratory descriptive method, and the physical spatial mapping of the character of the area, as well as the social and cultural mapping. The final result is the formulation of the development of Cengklik Reservoir Tourism that is environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Abstract

The concept of a living museum depicts Lasem – a multi-ethnic city known for its harmonious community – as a small city with diverse heritage nodes spreading across its plateau. However, the first settlements that became the prologue of Lasem’s history and development, are not being appreciated enough as it is now being used for swallow's nest production. Therefore, it is necessary to do a thoughtful conservation effort for the area of the early settlements, as one of the important nodes in Lasem. The reuse of heritage buildings and reactivation of the area into a place of activity that can support economic activities, social needs, and cultural sustainability for the people, will create more sustainable tourism for Lasem as an integrated living museum. Batik Tiga Negeri is Lasem’s distinctive fabric product and intangible heritage with an international reputation. The handmade creation involves endangered heritage: the elderly artists and the traditional Chinese architecture-influenced building which is used as the production house. Merging batik value into the adaptive reuse of early settlement buildings – which is also derived from traditional Chinese housing, will strengthen the most historical node while conserving important heritage elements, adding stronger bonds throughout Lasem as both a living museum and tourism destination.

Abstract

KOTAKU (City Without Slums) program has been implemented in numerous areas identified as slums settlements, including in Sidoarjo, a city adjacent to Surabaya that has given many services in housing provision including for people who commute from Surabaya city.  One of the efforts that must be done to handle the slums is to prevent and improve the quality of life and environment in a slum area to develop sustainable settlements to reach the objectives of Sustainable development (SDGs). One of the cases in this program happened in Tambak Cemandi, Sidoarjo where the slums area consists of 9.75 hectares widespread. The settlement area is located in the coastal area where it experienced a decrease in environmental quality due to a lack of public awareness in maintaining the cleanliness of the environment, most people dispose of garbage and defecation in rivers or ponds, and river conditions are filled with garbage, and not yet provided adequate infrastructure facilities. The article aims to formulate a strategy for improving the quality of slums in Tambak Cemandi, Sidoarjo. The first stage in this research is identifying factors that influence the quality improvement of slum settlements in the case study area using the content analysis method, continued by formulating strategies related to the influenced factors through a qualitative descriptive analysis method. The results showed in this article are strategies considering the influenced factors that are community behaviors, community participation, waste management facilities, sanitation infrastructure provision, road conditions, and population income.

Abstract

The topic of urban resilience has been gain much interest in the field of sustainability yet the use of the concept particularly for urban planning and design is still in debate. This paper searches for the gap in the use of the urban resilience concept for planning and design practice. The resilience terminology itself emerges and is known from the socio-ecological perspective, therefore the development of the terminology into the built environment issue needs to be appropriately translated. This paper aims to explore the advocacy of how urban resilience should be put into the discourse of planning and design practice, especially the standing of the concept within planning theory. The study is conducted through a literature review with objectives among others: (1) to get insight into what is urban resilience concept and how it has been used in the context of the urban and regional system? and (2) to elaborate on the potential of urban resilience concept be used in the planning and design practice through the perspective of planning theory. The initial result of the study concludes that the urban resilience concept has the potential to reframe the perspective of planning theory that has been applied nowadays, particularly the theory of planning and theory in planning with the emergence of so-called transformative and recovery planning. Both planning approaches must be considered the urban system as the object of planning.
