Abstract

The weaving culture is a local tradition owned by many local communities throughout Indonesia, including West Kalimantan. The culture, however, faces several challenges to its preservation due to modernization and cultural changes among younger generations. This community service program aims to preserve the weaving culture in West Kalimantan by delivering training and mentorship to a community of weaving artisans in Weaving Village Pontianak (Kanun), West Kalimantan, on the importance and skill of digitizing motifs and meanings of woven fabrics. This program is delivered by adopting the Community Development Method (CDM) consisting four stages: initiation, action planning, implementation of activities, and evaluation. From the training and mentorship activities, this program results in increasing knowledge and skills among Kanun’s youth regarding the importance of weaving tradition and digital skills to document and preserve the tradition. Therefore, it is recommended that more relevant sustainable programs are developed and integrated in the village development strategies, particularly in documenting and preserving rich histories and meanings related to the weaving tradition in Kanun. In the long term, this skill is hopefully beneficial for the archives of cultural heritage and for attracting new tourists and customers–realizing the “Tourism Village” goal for the targeted community.

Abstract

Watang Bacukiki Village has a farm that produces cow manure but is not utilized. Cow manure  (solid waste) eventually accumulates and creates an unpleasant odor. Based on these problems, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Parepare carried out a CSR program by empowering the community, namely the Bacukiki Berdikari Energy Village as a form of assistance around the company's operational locations by building reactors so that cow manure does not pollute the environment and can be used as new, environmentally friendly energy, namely biogas, and compost. This program involves the community in processing cow manure. The research was carried out in collaboration with research centers, while data collection used observation, interviews, and surveys. The results of the biogas are used for household gas needs with the aim that the people in Watang Bacukiki Village can be energy independent through environmentally friendly energy that is self-produced through locally owned potential.

Abstract

The coastal village of Kusamba in Bali has long relied on salt farming as an economic activity, but conventional methods have harmed the environment. The Tri Hita Karana-Based Conservation Initiatives were developed with community engagement to address this issue. Researchers collaborated closely with local stakeholders to establish an approach that combines tradition, ecological preservation, and economic prosperity. The main findings highlight the implementation of Tri Hita Karana in increasing salt production in order to preserve the traditional salt farming culture. The initiatives include training and mentoring programs on sustainable salt production methods and preserving traditional salt farming. These efforts have led to improved biodiversity, strengthened coastlines, increased income, and sustainable tourism. Challenges faced include resistance to change, which was overcome through dialogue. The initiatives have attracted global recognition and serve as a model for sustainable development. The community's active involvement, alongside scientific knowledge and eco-friendly technologies, contributed to a 30% increase in salt production yield. The initiatives align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlight the significance of holistic conservation approaches. Although successful, challenges such as funding limitations and climate variability persist. In conclusion, the Tri Hita Karana-Based Conservation Initiatives in Kusamba demonstrate the potential of blending tradition and modernity to achieve a balanced and sustainable future, setting an example for other communities and researchers.

Abstract

Intangible heritage, such as folklore, plays a crucial role in preserving cultural values and traditions. Regular efforts are needed to ensure these stories, and their embedded values are passed down through generations. Many ways can be conducted, including socialization and implementation of character education values. This article aims to socialize and implement the character education values contained in folklore. This community service program is an attempt to preserve and pass down the character education values contained in the legend "Malin Kundang," a well-known legend about a son's disobedience to his mother and cursed to be a stone, to many segments of people, especially youngsters in West Sumatra and its surroundings. Unversitas Andalas lecturers and students in Sumatra Barat, Sumatra Selatan, Bengkulu, and Riau conducted the program. We collected data regarding people's knowledge of "Malin Kundang," its educational values, and the methods of sustaining the values for the next generation. The results show that 65 out of 79 (82%) respondents understand the legend "Malin Kundang." Sixty-seven (85%) respondents agree that religious, moral, and social values such as courtesy, respect for others, obedience to parents, hard work, abstinence, and remembrance of origin are values to be passed on to others. While 'Malin Kundang' is widely known, continuous efforts are needed to instill its values in the younger generation. Utilizing modern techniques such as IT and media can enhance the preservation and dissemination of these cultural values.

Abstract

The population of Landungsari Village is very large, exceeding 9,000 people. With such a substantial population, the need for clean water and sanitation is also considerable. However, the potential sources of raw water for clean water reserves are very limited, especially surface water. The groundwater level at the study site is also quite deep, particularly in the southern parts of Landungsari Village. Rambakan and Bendungan hamlets have groundwater levels ranging from 15 to 25 meters deep. In contrast, Klandungan hamlet averages over 25 meters, and in the vicinity of Thursina Boarding School, it is more than 40 meters deep, making shallow wells impractical. Meanwhile, the clean water supplied by the PDAM is very limited. To address the issue of clean water availability, an investigation through groundwater estimation is necessary to ensure that the selected locations for deep well exploration are not in vain. The results of groundwater estimation must be representative and provide strong scientific justification for the accuracy of the findings. The method used in this investigation is the geoelectric resistivity method using ADMT-300H, which operates based on Darcy's law. It emits electromagnetic waves and measures soil resistivity to identify aquifer layers and determine the depth and thickness of the aquifer. The results obtained with ADMT-300H include: optimal discharge at well 1 (WL-1) of 3.07 l/s and well 2 (WL-2) of 3.14 l/s. Optimal discharge represents the sustainable limit for utilizing groundwater flow.

Abstract

The lack of understanding of Arabic among non-Arabic students at the Faculty of Divinity at Karabuk University is one of the factors that hinder them from understanding lessons, especially in courses such as qira'ah, tafsir, hadith, and others. This lack of language mastery causes difficulties in comprehending materials that requires a deep understanding of Arabic texts. Thus, this project aims to conducting several activities to improve and broaden the knowledge of students at Karabuk university. The subjects of this activity were 40 students from Karabuk University. The methods used implemented were direct methods and question and answer methods, through several stages of implementation, namely preparation, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation.  The results of the implementation of this activity show that the students managed to gain a deeper understanding of the Arabic language learning methods applied in Gontor. This insight is not only limited to theory, but also involves direct practice as shown through the active interaction between Santri and Turkish presenters during the teaching process. This interaction is an important element, as it allows santri to experience teaching approaches from different perspectives and interact with international teachers, which enriches their learning experience. Thus, this activity not only increases the santri’s knowledge of teaching methods, but also builds cross-cultural communication abilities and strengthens their Arabic language skills through hands-on practice and guidance from experienced presenters.

Abstract

Strengthening state defense awareness could be supported by the existence of educators from remote and border areas who have adequate performance of high-order thinking skills (HOTS). Currently, HOTS has not been consistently introduced in mathematics learning for teachers in remote areas. This study is a part of the teachers’ development program concerned with delivering effective methods in teaching mathematics at the elementary school level and gaining teachers’ State Defense Awareness to provide educators’ perspectives regarding HOTS implementation in mathematics learning in remote areas of Indonesia. Data was collected by giving questionnaires to the teachers as pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed that the teachers of some remote areas recognized the advantages as well as the difficulties of HOTS integration in learning activities. Teachers' understanding of applying HOTS in mathematics teaching could be slightly increased through comprehensive training regarding HOTS. It was also found that teachers from remote and border areas are still required to be more encouraged to implement and develop HOTS in mathematics learning through training in education research activities.
