Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the effect of using online educational tools on science learning among male students in the fifth year of primary school in Shahriyar city. Research method is semi-experimental based on pre-test - post-test design. All male students in the six year of primary school at Shahriyar city in the academic year 2016-17 that 260 of them were selected by random sampling. First, pages from the book of science without the use of educational tools in all classes are taught and filled researcher-made inventory of science learning (reliability of learning inventory using Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated and was used to assess the validity of the content from the point of view of primary school teachers and professors and experts). Then other pages of the math book using educational tools in 5 sessions of 30-minute was done supervised by teachers and researchers for all classes. Having the project been completed, researcher-made learning questionnaire was again conducted equal to the first questionnaire for all classes. And to analyze the assumptions, gamma test in agreement tables and non- parametric Spearman correlation test using SPSS software version 20 was conducted. The results showed that the active use of educational tools leads to a significant difference in science learning in students.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of electronic flashcards on EFL vocabulary learning of preparatory-year female students at a Saudi Arabia. It was conducted following the quantitative research methodology with a quasi-experimental design. Two groups were assigned: an experimental group who used electronic flashcards, and a control group who employed the traditional method of vocabulary learning. A pre-test and a post-test were administered in order to appraise their performance before and after the experiment. The results revealed that the post-test scores of students in the experimental group were significantly higher than their pre-test. Also, the results showed that electronic flashcards promoted students' vocabulary, causing a statistical significance in comparison to the control group. Based on these findings, this study was able to draw a number of implications and recommendations

Abstract

The study examined if schooling experience and teacher’s classroom interaction is the same for senior secondary school adolescent girls and boys in Jigawa state, Nigeria. It also determined whether influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the teacher’s classroom behaviour and environment exist on their participation in the classroom learning activities. These were with a view to improving the teacher-student’s relationships and teacher’s classroom effectiveness. The study adopted a survey design. The population consisted of all male and female students in public Senior Secondary Schools in Jigawa state. The sample consisted of 370 Senior Secondary Classes Three (SS III) students. Of this number, 185 were boys and 185 were girls selected through stratified sampling procedure using sex as stratum. Their average age was 15.17 years. A self-developed instrument was used to collect relevant data in the study. Data collected were analysed using Independent t-test statistical method. The results showed that teachers do not significantly interact with girls and boys in the same manner in the classroom. However, there existed a significant influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the teacher’s classroom behaviour on their participation in the classroom learning activities. Also, there was a significant influence of students’ perceived level of personalisation of the classroom environment on their participation in the classroom learning activities. It was concluded that schooling experience is not the same for girls and boys respectively. Thus, appropriate interventionist strategies should be put in place to assist realising the objective of equal educational opportunity.

Abstract

The outbreak of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) in China around December 2019 led to the premature closure of schools globally. This was done to ensure reduced transmission of the disease. Due to the indefinite level two lockdown in Zimbabwe, schools remain closed. This has led to online home schooling, where schools send work to parents who conduct and monitor the lessons on their behalf. This study sought to find out the experiences and readiness of parents in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Zimbabwe, who were expected to conduct lessons online. The study which is situated in the interpretive paradigm and qualitative approach collected data from ten purposively selected parents as key informants. Qualitative data was collected using emailed open-ended questionnaires in compliance with COVID-19 regulations. Results revealed that parents found it difficult to conduct online lessons due to costly data, lack of expert knowledge and teaching pedagogy, unclear instructions from teachers, unavailable or shared gadgets at home and poor internet connectivity. Schools were also said to be piling up work, disregarding parents’ other responsibilities. Conclusions drawn were that most of the parents were not ready for online home schooling although they perceived the exercise to be beneficial. Recommendations were that schools should conduct training sessions for staff and parents, have formal feedback sessions and exercise flexibility for execution and submission of work and continue online lessons post COVID-19. Further research could be conducted to find out learners’ perceptions of online home schooling.

Abstract

Learning creativity skill is important for students. Distance learning during the Covid-19 period is the best option for study. However, students' needs among cognitive, affective, psychomotor and various skills need to be well accommodated. This study aims to describe the process of creativity in project-based learning in distance learning. The research subjects were 10 elementary school education students grade 2nd. The learning project was carried out at home with online guidance and discussion due to the conditions of Covid-19 which made it impossible to gather. The learning project that is designed is to create a learning media for beginning reading for elementary school students. Wallas' creative process includes 5 stages: preparation, incubation, intimacy, illumination and verification. Distance learning projects are carried out in 7 stages, namely: (1) formulating learning outcomes, (2) understanding concepts, (3) skills training, (4) designing the project, (5) making the project proposal, (6) executing projects and (7) project report. The results showed that in distance project learning can still be done to train creativity with paying more in accessibility of communication and following the learning stage

Abstract

Recently, at Moroccan tertiary level and in the area of student practices, little attention has been brought particularly to the skill of note-taking and active reading comprehension, and an insightful and in-depth understanding of how students learn from lectures could presumably be valuable in understanding and unravelling the intricacies of possible positive results of their note-taking behavior. The current study focuses mainly on the instruction of students into the systems of note-taking and how that affects their level of reading comprehension. Therefore, the effort reported here attempts to assess the students’ current systems of notetaking and how they contribute to reach a full understanding of reading comprehension texts. The participants were 94 Semester-One students at the department of the English Studies at Ibn Tofail University, School of Arts and Humanities in Kénitra, Morocco. The data of the present study were collected by means of a TOEFL iBT Reading Practice comprehension test (i.e., post-test), and strategy training equating note-taking schemas and reading comprehension texts. The findings have showcased that after having been instructed through many sessions of note-taking, students felt that their process of reading comprehension is enhanced as they were able to organize their ideas and information from the text, stay focused and engaged while reading, and keep a record of reading material to use it later. This is solid proof that they critically used and retained what they read.

Abstract

Telecommunication advertisements have bifurcating relations, functioning as a buoyant part of the capitalist market, and as instruments indexing consumerism, which bridges the gap between service providers and subscribers. Previous linguistic studies on the subject have focused on speech acts, mainly locutionary and illocutionary acts, and the lexical and stylistic resources in telecommunication advertisements. This study focuses on the representations of consumerism in MTN and GLO advertisements. The study adopts a model labeled as conceptual-textual meaning in advertisements, which annexes the principles of critical stylistics, pragmatic acts, and multimodality to analyse both textual and multimodal excerpts from ten (10) MTN and GLO television advertisements. These were downloaded from youtube, where they are streamed to reach a vast majority of internet users after they had been aired on mainstream television and cable stations. The study reveals that consumerism is the most pivotal feature projected in the advertisements of MTN and GLO. Advertisements and services are principally designed to condition choice of the subscribers to expand their consumptions. Consumerism is metaphorised, using food substances and materials co-opted from the socio-cultural milieus that condition the advertisements. Conceptual-textual functions like naming and describing, enumerating and exemplifying and prioritising, and direct acts, indirect acts, conversation, emotional and psychological acts, as well as the textual resources of inference, metaphor, reference, relevance, and metapragmatic joker are used extensively to show consumerism. The study concludes every service option is aimed at expanding consumerism, while the cost of services, interest, and use of the services are the shades of consumption of telecommunication services

Abstract

The study examined the mass media as means of initiating community developmental programmes in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research design of the survey type.The sample for the study consisted of 120 respondents in Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. The study raised four research questions which the data were collected through questionnaire and also tested and analyzed with descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the mass media was the best platform for mobilizing people of the community for participation and also attracts government attention to communities for developmental programmes. Based on the findings of the study, it is recommended that residents’ collaboration and empowerment form of participation is encouraged by NGOs and development agencies.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the effects of instruction using mobile phone based virtual networks on the rate of learning of students with visual impairment. This study utilized a quasi-experimental approach, which was performed among male students suffering from visual impairment in their second grade of high school in Iran. The sample size consisted of 52 students with visual impairment (26 in experimental group and 26 in control group) who had cell phones and volunteered to participate in the test. The experimental group was taught through WhatsApp social network while the control group received regular classroom teachings. The data was collected using a researcher made English language test. The findings of the study revealed that the instruction through the virtual networks has a positive effect on the increase of learning rate in students with visual impairment. The results from this study would be useful to instructional designers, specialists, special education teachers and learners who wish to use cell phones for the blind.

Abstract

Private schools and owners invest a lot of worthwhile input in the provision of functional educational service delivery thus paving way for further access, equity and fair play to every intending learner as complement to the effort of government, the public school providers in Nigeria. This development actually met the world declaration of the expectation from all nations of the world to provide mass, quality and free education to all citizens. By and large, education service delivery as a social service requires huge sum of money in its operations across all levels of educational institutions – basic, post basic and tertiary. The paper examined effective management of private schools in Nigeria and the necessity for governments’ intervention. In a nutshell, the paper espoused: the world demand on provision of quality education; available sources of funding for private school ownership; challenges of private school ownership and management; justification for the establishment of private schools to support government established institutions; comparism of funding and management pattern of private schools in Nigeria and diaspora; and core constraints of private schools. The paper concludes and recommends that, respective governments, their agencies and parastatals should participate actively in rendering adequate support regarding award of grant-in-aid to owners of private schools; and that cost of registration and set up cost on infrastructural facilities for private schools - low, medium and high scales should be cut down by FME or SMoEs , ZIE, LIE, UBEC, TRCN, and similar institutions thus, affordable to create more access to learners with standards.
