Abstract

This study utilizes a descriptive qualitative method, selected because it allows an in-depth exploration of the collaboration between vocational education and the shipping industry from multiple perspectives. Data collection through interviews, observations, and document analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of the processes, experiences, and challenges involved in enhancing the internship competencies of shipping students at SMK Negeri 8 Samarinda. This approach is well-suited to capturing the complex interactions and dynamic relationships between the school and industry partners in real-world settings. The findings reveal a strong, collaborative framework where school leaders, teachers, and industry representatives work closely to design and implement an internship program that integrates both technical skills and essential soft skills required in maritime careers. The curriculum is regularly updated to align with national and international standards, and students receive preparatory training and certifications to ensure industry readiness. Supervision and mentoring during internships foster the development of skills and professionalism. Importantly, the dual evaluation system involving both the school and industry partners provides ongoing, actionable feedback that supports continuous program improvement. This study uniquely contributes by offering a detailed account of a successful, synergistic collaboration model specifically tailored to vocational maritime education, addressing a gap in prior research that often generalizes education-industry partnerships. It highlights the integration of soft skills within technical training and emphasizes the value of collaborative program evaluation, which together significantly enhance student competence and preparedness for the maritime workforce. By documenting these innovative practices in the Indonesian vocational education context, this research provides valuable insights and a replicable model for other maritime schools aiming to improve internship effectiveness through meaningful industry collaboration

Abstract

This study investigates students' learning styles in the Speaking Course at the English Department of Widya Gama Mahakam University, Samarinda. The research aimed to identify problems faced by students when using their learning styles and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of different learning styles in speaking development. The study employed a qualitative case study design with six purposively selected fourth-semester students representing visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with theory triangulation for validation. For thematic analysis, we followed Braun and Clarke's six-phase framework, and for the theory triangulation, applied Fleming's VARK model. The findings revealed distinct learning style preferences that significantly influenced speaking course. Visual learners demonstrated strong preparation and organizational skills but struggled with spontaneous conversations and real-time communication. Auditory learners showed excellent listening abilities and natural speaking fluency but faced challenges with written preparation and environmental distractions. Kinesthetic learners excelled in interactive activities and experiential learning but encountered difficulties in traditional classroom settings and abstract discussions. Each learning style group faced specific challenges: visual learners experienced anxiety in unstructured speaking situations and over-dependence on visual supports; auditory learners struggled with spelling and written organization; kinesthetic learners had difficulties with sedentary learning environments. Despite their strengths, each learning style demonstrated notable limitations in comprehensive speaking development. The research contributes to understanding the relationship between learning styles and speaking skill acquisition in EFL contexts. The result is that while learning style preferences should be accommodated, students need multimodal learning strategies to overcome single-modality limitations

Abstract

The important of students Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) in 21st century education requires teachers to provide learning process that support this skill. One learning model that can improve help students SRL is mentoring based learning. However, teachers in Thailand especially at Songserm Sasana Vitaya School, still do not have enough knowledge about how to mentoring can support students SRL. Therefore the aim of this community service was to conduct a workshop that introduce the concept of mentoring and its role in supporting SRL. The method began with a pre-test to determine preliminary understanding of teacher, followed by an online workshop using the zoom platform. In addition to the online workshop, an offline workshop was also held to conduct role play and gallery walk activities. Finally, a post-test was conducted to measure the increasing of teachers knowledge and skills.  The result of workshop showed 57,5% increase in teacher awareness that mentoring can help student become more independent. Meanwhile, the understanding that mentoring supports SRL improved from 11 % in the pre-test to 52,2% in the post-test. In addition, teacher’s responses to open-ended question changed from simple answers in the pretest to more complex and detailed answers in the post-test. Overall, the comparison between pre and post-test result shows a clear improvement in teachers understanding of the role of mentoring in enhancing student’s SRL.

Abstract

The nationwide implementation of Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum, emphasizing student-centered learning, has limited empirical research that has examined how English teachers navigate the pedagogical transition from traditional teacher-centered approaches in actual classroom contexts. This qualitative case study investigated the implementation experiences of English teachers adopting the Merdeka Curriculum, focusing on their strategies, challenges, and outcomes in transitioning to student-centered teaching approaches. Using purposive sampling, in-depth interviews were conducted with two experienced English teachers at SMP N 9 Loa Kulu, Kutai Kartanegara. Data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana's (2014) interactive model to identify implementation patterns and emerging themes. Findings revealed that both teachers demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the curriculum's constructivist principles and successfully implemented student-centered strategies through project-based activities, innovative assessment methods, and cultural integration approaches. Teachers effectively fostered 21st-century skills development through collaborative projects and authentic communication practices. However, significant implementation challenges emerged, including assessment transition difficulties, increased material development workload, limited technology resources, and insufficient administrative support. Moreover, despite these obstacles, teachers reported positive learning outcomes, including enhanced student engagement, improved critical thinking, and better collaborative skills. Key recommendations include continuous professional development, improved resource allocation, and stronger institutional support systems. While this small-scale study limits generalizability, it provides valuable insights into the practical realities of curriculum implementation and highlights the critical need for systematic support to achieve the Merdeka Curriculum's transformative educational goals in Indonesian EFL contexts

Abstract

Despite the widespread shift to digital learning during the pandemic, limited research has examined how contextual factors influence ICT adoption patterns among EFL teachers in developing regions. This study investigates Information and Communication Technology (ICT) adoption among 247 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia, using an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework. The research addresses the critical gap in understanding technology integration patterns in post-pandemic Indonesian EFL education contexts.Using Structural Equation Modeling, the study examined core TAM constructs (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward using, behavioral intention, and actual system use) alongside five extended constructs: digital self-efficacy, facilitating conditions, social influence, technology anxiety, and pandemic technology familiarity. Results revealed moderate-to-high ICT adoption levels, with video conferencing tools achieving the highest adoption rates, particularly Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp for educational purposes. In contrast, AI-powered tools showed the lowest adoption rates, with limited integration in lesson planning activities. The extended TAM demonstrated superior explanatory power, accounting for 63% of variance compared to traditional models. All hypothesized relationships were supported, with perceived usefulness emerging as the strongest predictor of positive attitudes and digital self-efficacy significantly influencing perceived ease of use.Notable findings include persistent digital divides between beginner and advanced users, and the significant influence of pandemic technology familiarity on current adoption patterns, validating emergency remote teaching's lasting impact on educational practices. The study provides practical implications for differentiated professional development, infrastructure investment prioritizing reliable connectivity, and targeted interventions addressing confidence-building alongside technical training to enhance educational technology integration in developing regions
