Ulumuna (P-ISSN: 1411-3457; E-ISSN: 2355-7648), a journal of Islamic studies published twice a year (June and December) by State Islamic University (UIN) of Mataram since 1997, publishes original (library or field) research articles in the field of Islamic studies. It promotes multidisciplinary approaches to Islam and Islamicate societies and focuses on six main topics: (1) the Qur’an and hadith (2) Islamic Law (3) Islamic Theology (Kalam) (4) Islamic Philosophy (5) Islamic Mysticism (Tasawwuf) (6) Islamic Education (7) Islamic Communication and Propogation (Dakwa) and (8) Islamic Politic. All submitted manuscripts are subject to double-blind review process. Ulumuna was admitted as an accredited journal by the Director General of Strengthening Research and Development, Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia in 2017. The accreditation is given through a Director Decree No. 32a/E/KPT/2017 and is effective until 2022. Ulumuna has become a CrossRef Member since year 2015. Therefore, all of its publications have a unique Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number.

Abstract

Pesantren is the oldest Islamic educational institution in Indonesia. Due to its strongly established existence and dyanamics up to present times, it has become an interesting topic of research. This article attempts to examine one of the traditional pesantrens in Mataram, namely Al-Raisiyah. Using case study method, it focuses the pesantren’s management. This study argues that the pesantren does employ a single management but a multi-management system. The pesantren combines the official curriculum of education unit level with special cirruculum of pesantren. Although the pesantren does not recruit teachers openly so the recruitment is not competitive, it adopts an open and modern management regarding student affairs, infrastructure and financial resources. The pesantren’s school committee, which is very traditional in its vision and orientation, tends to emphasize a model of traditional pattern of social communication and relations.

Abstract

There are a great number of teachers of Islamic religious education who hold a professional diploma and yet have not realized the tasks of competent professional teacher. The four indicators of competent and professional teacher, as these are elaborated in Statutes and Regulations, have not been integrated in teacher performance. This problem must be resolved. It requires a system that can control the implementation of the principles of professional teacher while at the same time does not ruin teacher’s profession and capability. This article offers professional-based assessment and evaluation of teacher performance as a medium for a regular control. This system will be able to measure teacher performance referring to their skills and to avoid deviation in the evaluation between what is taught and the subject being taught concerning teachers’ professional skills. With this professional-based evaluation system, the processes of evaluation and assessment become objective, accurate and accountable.
