Abstract

The rubber tree rootstock nursery using the root trainer method is aimed to promote root growth through the use of non-soil growing media in a special container. This technology offers the advantages of a shortened breeding process, good rooting, and ease of delivery. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the planting media composition of oil palm bunches compost, manure, rice husk, solid decanter, and Trichoderma viride on the growth of rubber rootstock under the root trainer method. The research was carried out in the greenhouse of the Sungei Putih Research Center, Indonesian Rubber Research Institute, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra in January-May 2019. The observation included plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, dry weight, and root length, and successful grafting percentage. The results indicated that the mixture of oil palm bunches compost, solid decanter, and Trichoderma viride (Te treatment) was the most potential to be developed as a planting media for rubber rootstock nursery under root trainer system. At 18 weeks after planting, the Te treatment had an average height of 82.66 + 14.27 cm with an increment rate of 3.25 + 0.81 cm/week, number of leaves 11.33 + 3.21 leaves with the increment of 0.52 + 0.20 leaves/week, stem diameter 5.29 + 0.73 mm with an increase of 0.33 + 0.05 mm/week. The Te treatment had a length and root weight of 41.97 + 2.40 cm and 1.68 + 0.77 g, respectively, with the grafting successfulness percentage of 47.37%. Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the growth performance and profitability of broilers chicken with vermi meal supplementation under a total confinement management system. A total of 60 broiler chickens were randomly distributed to four dietary treatments: T1= commercial feed (CF), T2= CF+2% vermi meal (VM), T3= CF+3% VM, T4= CF+5% VM inclusion in a completely randomized design. Feed conversion ratio was not significantly influenced by VM supplementation. However, the highest feed intake was recorded in broilers fed CF supplemented with 2% VM (T2) while control broilers fed only CF (T1) had the lowest feed consumption. Broiler chickens fed CF supplemented with 2% VM (T2) were recorded with the highest values of final body weight and weight gain compared to T1 group and T4 group, respectively. However, broiler in T2 group had similar values of body weights and weight gains compared to T3. Consequently, 2% level of VM had an optimum result in final weight, weight gain, and feed consumption, while comparable to the other treatments in water consumption, feed conversion ratio, dressing percentage, and carcass weight. Cost and return analysis of the dietary treatments with VM showed a negative effect, since the higher concentration of VM supplementation had the higher cost in production, due to the expensive price of imported vermin or earthworm meal. Keywords: broiler chickens, performance, total confinement, vermi meal

Abstract

Rice is a staple food for most Indonesian population. Nowadays, people want staple foods that are not only filling but also do not increase blood sugar concentration (low glycemic index). One of foods that contain higher starch, lower glycemic index, and higher fiber than rice is white corn. The white color of the corn is an advantage because if it is made in grits it can resemble rice. Weakness of white corn is harder than rice. To soften and make it easier to consume, it is coated with an edible packaging made from tapioca. The purposes of this study were to study (1) the quality of dried corn rice from local white corn Anoman 1 variety in edible packaging with packaging thickness of 0.7, 0.9, 1.1, 1.3, and 1.5 mm; (2) the quality of cooked white corn rice produced. The results showed that the thickness of the edible packaging significantly affected (1) the moisture, ash, protein, fat, and carbohydrate contents of dried white corn rice and (2) all parameters of cooked white corn rice (a = 0.05). The best cooked corn rice based on the stickiness test was found in coated dried corn rice with edible packaging with a thickness of 1.5 mm. Characteristics of (1) dried white corn rice contained 11.39% water, 0.21% db ash, 15.23% db protein, 0.53% db fat, 72.64% carbohydrates, 2.11% crude fiber, (2) the quality of cooked of white corn rice were 18.17 g / mm2 stickiness, yellowish color (score 1.1), slightly distinctive aroma of corn (score 2.5), slightly fluffier texture (score 3.4), and rather strong sweet taste (score 2.8). Keywords: edible packaging, local white corn Anoman 1, rice, stickiness, tapioca
