Abstract

The world is experiencing energy crisis today due to the Russian invasion in Ukraine that affect the global market as Russia cuts off its energy supply. Renewable energy is considered as a solution for the energy crisis since it’s sustainable and can replace the old energy sources. China as the energy innovator, believed to influence the world with its renewable energy innovation since China has become the world’s largest renewable energy producer that distributed its renewable energy. By following in China's footsteps in developing renewable energy, countries in the world have the potential to be independent and not depend on other countries for energy.

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines how the Berau Government's diplomacy efforts in promoting sustainable tourism in the Derawan Islands. This is based on the signing of the Minutes of Agreement by the Berau Government with WWF and EU within the framework of the Ocean Governance Project (OGP) cooperation in 2022. This cooperation includes a series of agendas within the OGP framework, including community and community assistance, coral reef and marine biota conservation, and sustainable tourism development. This research uses the concepts of paradiplomacy and sustainable tourism as an analytical tool. This research is conducted in a descriptive analytical manner based on data derived from official reports of the Berau Government, East Kalimantan Provincial Government, WWF, OGP website, as well as literature sources from previous research on related issues. Based on the analysis, the collaboration carried out by the Berau Government within the OGP framework is a diplomatic effort to promote sustainable tourism in the Derawan Islands at the global level. There are three main steps taken by the Berau Government within the OGP framework to promote sustainable tourism in the Derawan Islands, namely rehabilitation and conservation of marine ecosystems, economic development through the tourism sector, and improving the image of the Derawan Islands as a sustainable tourist destination.

Abstract

Sustainable energy development is an effort made by the European Union in response to climate change. One form of the EU's efforts in developing sustainable energy is by setting standards for energy and energy raw materials that enter the EU market, one of which is palm oil. The European Union has firmly demonstrated its commitment to setting sustainability standards in the EU market. This is shown by one of the discussions of EU energy diplomacy, namely promoting market rules in producer and transit countries. This research aims to analyze the EU's success in encouraging Indonesia to implement sustainability standards for palm oil. This discussion will be qualitatively discussed using smart power theory. This research shows that the European Union's energy diplomacy to encourage sustainability standards in Indonesia is carried out through formal energy negotiations through the IEU-CEPA cooperation framework, namely palm oil standardization. To support this step, the European Union sets hard power in the form of sanctions and soft power in the form of co-optatives to show its commitment to promoting applicable EU market rules.

Abstract

This research will evaluate Singapore's strategic role in supporting the implementation of the SAMOA Pathway framework for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with a focus on the renewable energy agenda through the "SIDS of Change" initiative. The SAMOA Pathway framework, launched in 2014, aims to promote environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and economic resilience for small island nations. This study applies Robert Keohane's Liberal Institutionalism theory, which emphasizes the importance of multilateral cooperation and the role of international institutions in facilitating collaboration among nations to address collective challenges. The research adopts a qualitative method with a descriptive analytical approach. Primary data is obtained through interviews with experts in the fields of energy and sustainable development, while secondary data is collected from academic journals, official reports, and related policy documents. To enhance validity, the study employs data triangulation to compare information from various sources. The findings indicate that Singapore plays a crucial role in supporting SIDS through capacity-building programs such as the Singapore Cooperation Program (SCP), which facilitates technology transfer and foreign direct investment (FDI). Singapore leverages its strengths in renewable energy technologies, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) development and solar farm projects, to build strategic partnerships with SIDS. However, challenges such as the bureaucratic complexities among SIDS and the lack of immediate economic benefits for Singapore hinder the implementation of this agenda. From the perspective of Liberal Institutionalism, Singapore's contributions highlight the importance of international institutions in creating opportunities for countries with similar challenges to collaborate.
