Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the kinds of illocutionary functions for imperative utterances in the novel “Uncle Tom's Cabin” by appliying pragmatic approach. it used  a descriptive qualitative method with embedded case study. The data consists of the form of words, phrases and sentences containing speech acts that have an illocutionary power functioning as imperative obtained from all dialogues in the novel. After that, the data were collected by content analysis method. The result reveals that there are 35 data which have function for commanding and then followed by 28 data for requesting. Then, there are also 17 data for suggesting, 13 advicing data, and 3 complaining data. At last, there are both of recommending and promising having 2 data in this research. In the conclusion, the function of commanding is tend to be discovered dominantly in this research since this novel tells about slavery issue.

Abstract

Directive speech acts are words to order someone so the other people take action according to the request of the speaker both directly and indirectly. This study discusses about An Analysis of Directive Speech Acts Found in Jumanji: The Next Level Movie Directed by Jake Kashan. The purpose of this study is to identify the kinds and the forms of directive speech acts found in Jumanji: The Next Level movie directed by Jake Kashan. This research was conducted using qualitative method. The main instrument of this research is the researcher himself. The researcher as a human instrument used laptop, movie, note book, pen, dictionary as the supporting instrument. The data of this research was collected by documentation and content analysis. The result of the analysis showed 6 types of directive speech acts found in Jumanji: The Next Level Movie Directed by Jake Kashan. They were: 3 data belonging to begging, 49 data belonging to commanding, 6 data belonging to forbidding, 1 data belonging to ordering, 5 data belonging to requesting, 6 data belonging to suggestions. The amount totals of data are 70. The forms of directive speech acts found in The Jumanji: The Next Level Movie Directed by Jake Kashan were declarative, imperative, and interrogative. 11 data belonging to declarative, 54 data belonging to imperative, and 4 data belonging to interrogative.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to compare the Laskar Pelangi novel to the Dua Belas Pasang Mata novel in order to establish the narrative's building elements. This study employed the descriptive research method. The author describes the data obtained in a systematic, factual, and correct manner in order to discover facts and causative processes. The data is in the form of recorded documents that describe the structure of the novel using literary analysis. As a result of this inquiry, Andrea Hirata's novel Laskar Pelangi contains 48 chapters and diverse themes that will be transferred. The key plot elements of this work are as follows: The story begins with the registration of students at a Muhammadiyah elementary school in Gantong village, Gantong sub-district, East Belitong, South Sumatra. To better comprehend the arrangement, there will be three steps: establishing the area, the period, and the community from the start to the last chapter, the action of this novel takes place in Belitong. This novel is set in several locales across Belitong. This novel uses the viewpoint as the primary character based on the role. Furthermore, the central theme of the novel Dua Belas Pasang Mata is the main character's sympathy and affection. Starting with a story about Miss Oishi's first visit to Tanjung village as a substitute teacher at a branch school and the reaction of the local people to her wearing western attire at the time. Thus, it is known that both novels have extraordinary social crisis stories.

Abstract

ABSTRACTChildren’s phonological development is somewhat foreseeable, yet there are certain sounds that appear at different ages across children. However, there are some general guidelines which can be used to analyze the phonological development of a child. This study aims to examine the phonological development process of an American English native speaker named Brielle in producing consonants from the age of three to six using the speech sound development milestones provided by Sander (1972). The data are taken from youtube videos of Brielle when appearing on an American talkshow called “The Ellen Show”. A descriptive qualitative method is used in this study to elaborate the phonological development of Brielle. The result shows that Brielle completed her phonological development at the age of six. It can also be concluded from the study that some consonants appear earlier or later thatn the phonological development milestones set by Sander (1972). During the process of acquiring consonants, she replaced the consonant which she could not produce with another sound with similar features, such as replacing the liquid sound /l/ with the glide sound /j/.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze translation strategies in the translation of personal pronouns used in the Disney movie Rapunzel into the Thai version. The objectives of the study are: 1) to describe the strategies used in the translation of personal pronouns in Rapunzel movie, and 2) to determine the frequency of each translation strategy used in the translation of personal pronouns in Rapunzel movie. The data of the study were gathered from English personal pronouns from the subtitle on DVD Rapunzel which was released in 2010. The result of the study showed that ten translation strategies based on Pokasamrit (2011), Nida (1964), and Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) were identified as used in the study. The strategies of translation were pronoun to pronoun/literal translation, explicitness to implicitness, kinship terms, formal language, informal language, editorial pronoun, addition, alterations/transposition, and inversion. The frequency of each translation strategy found was determined by considering the following elements: the formulation of personal pronouns and the differences between personal pronouns in English and Thai.
