Abstract

As humans age, there is a decline in the function and physiological mechanisms of the body, which can affect quality of life. Chronic inflammation is one of the characteristics found in the aging process, marked by an increase in proinflammatory cytokines in circulation. IL-6 is one of the cytokines that play a role in chronic inflammation. This study aimed to determine serum IL-6 levels using D-galactose induction in Sprague-Dawley rats. The study used a pure experiment with a post-test only control group design, in which 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups: control and treatment. The research sample was serum, and the control group received a placebo of 0.9% NaCl at a dose of 400 mg/day/kg intraperitoneally. The treatment group, which underwent aging induction, was given D-galactose at the same dose and route. The treatment was administered for 6 weeks, and serum was collected from blood taken in the 6th week. The results indicated that the administration of D-galactose did not have a significant effect on increasing IL-6 levels.

Abstract

Pollinating beetle (Elaeidobius kamerunikus Faust) and thrips hawaiiensis (Thrips hawaiiensis Morgan) are the main pollinators of oil palm. Elaeidobius kamerunikus was introduced from Cameroon in 1982 while Thrips hawaiiensis is a native pollinator that already exists in the ecosystem of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to study the potential of Elaeidobius kamerunikus and Thrips hawaiiensis as pollinating agents in oil palm. This research was conducted in a plasma plantation belonging to the Agricultural Technology Assessment Agency (BPTP) in Nagari Gunung Medan, Sitiung District, Dharmasraya Regency, West Sumatra Province. The parameters used to measure the potential of insect pollinators are population abundance, frequency of visits, and fruit set and fruit grade values, as well as the yield of palm oil produced. Observation of abundance was carried out by directly observing the population of these insects on male flowers of oil palm that were in anthesis. The frequency of visits by Elaeidobius kamerunikus and Thrips hawaiiensis was carried out on receptive female oil palm flowers using the Fix Sample Method. Observations of the frequency of visits were carried out in the morning, afternoon and evening. Pollination effectiveness is done by looking at the value of fruit set and the grade of fruit produced. Based on the analysis of the observed data, it is known that the population abundance of Elaeidobius kamerunikus is higher than that of Thrips hawaiiensis. Likewise with the frequency of visits Elaeidobius kamerunikus visited the female oil palm flowers more often than Thrips hawaiiensis. Based on the time of observation, Elaeidobius kamerunikus visited more female oil palm flowers in the morning and afternoon, while in the afternoon the frequency of Thrips hawaiiensis visits was higher. The total fruit formed as a result of pollination of Thrips hawaiiensis was 793 consisting of 177 grade A, 145.5 grade B, and 472.50 grade C, while the fruit pollinated by Elaeidobius kamerunikus was less, namely 514.5 fruit consisting of 150 grade A, 125.5 grade B, and 239 grade C. The fruit set values produced by the two pollinator insects tested were low, namely 46.45% for Elaeidobius kamerunikus and 59.43 for Thrips hawaiiensis.

Abstract

Continuous application of inorganic fertilizers can reduce soil fertility due to a decrease in its physical, chemical and biological properties. The application of a combination of petroganic fertilizers and POC coconut coir is expected to be able to improve soil properties, so as to optimize plant growth and fruit, especially ciplukan (Physalis peruviana L.). This study aims to analyze the growth and yield of ciplukan (Physalis ‎peruviana L.) by administering various combinations of concentrations of petroganic fertilizer and coco coir POC, and to determine the most optimal combination for ciplukan growth and yield. Sasi Kirana Green House, Purworejo, Hargobinangun, Pakem, Sleman Regency, as well as the Ahmad Dahlan University Botanical Laboratory from March 2022 to June 2022. The research method used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) of two variables, in the form of petroganic fertilizer (P0 : 0g, P1: 90g and P2: 180g) and POC coconut fiber (K0: 0%, K1: ‎‎10% and K2: 20%) with 3 repetitions. The dependent variables were plant height, number of leaves, number of branches, crown wet and dry weight, number of fruit, fruit diameter and fruit weight. Data were analyzed by ANOVA parametric test and DMRT follow-up test, or Friedman's non-parametric test. The results showed that the higher the combination of petroganic and POC concentrations of coco coir, the higher the growth and yield of ciplukan. Treatment I (180 g of petroganic and 20% POC concentration) gave significantly different results for all parameters, namely: 1) plant height (192.67 cm); 2) number of leaves (242.33 leaves); 3) number of branches (44.67); 4) crown wet weight (309.33 g); 5) shoot dry weight (58.00 g); 6) number of fruit per plant (66.67 fruit); 7) fruit diameter (13.83 mm); and 8) fruit weight (1.87 g). The conclusions of this study indicate that the application of petroganic and POC coconut coir can increase the growth of ciplukan plants, with the most optimal growth response shown in treatment I (administration of 180g petroganic and ‎20% POC concentration).

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a commodity that often experiences price fluctuations due to a decrease in the supply of cayenne pepper amidst a large market demand. One of the factors causing the decrease in the supply of cayenne pepper is the environmental conditions that experience drought stress during the dry season. Osmopriming of seeds is one method that can be used to overcome drought stress. This study aims to determine the effect of osmopriming seeds using PEG 6000 on the germination and growth of cayenne pepper plants on drought stress. This study was experimental using a completely randomized design, with 2 treatment factors and 3 replications. The first factor was the application of priming at three concentration levels: P0 (0% PEG), P1 (12.5% PEG), and P2 (25% PEG). The second factor was drought stress treatment which consisted of 3 levels, namely: K1 (100% field capacity), K2 (75% field capacity), and K3 (50% field capacity). Data analysis used univariate analysis of variance and followed by DMRT (Duncan's Multiple Range Test) advanced testing with α = 0.05. The results showed that the application of 25% PEG priming gave the most optimal results on the performance of germination and growth of cayenne pepper plants, such as plant height, root length, root fresh weight, shoot fresh weight, root dry weight, and shoot fresh weight.
