Abstract

Purpose of the study: An Merdeka curriculum requires students to be able to acquire scientific attitudes and process skills in science learning. Laboratory management is very important in supporting science learning. This research aims to analyze the management of science laboratories to support science learning. Methodology: This type of research is qualitative research using a systematic literature review method. The population in this study was 60 articles originating from Google Scholar with publications from 2018 to 2023 which were then filtered again and a sample of 18 articles was obtained. The data analysis technique uses the matrix method. Main Findings: Based on the results of a systematic literature review analysis, it is known that laboratory management in several schools has factors inhibiting laboratory management, such as the unavailability of laboratory personnel and technicians, multifunctional laboratory space, allocation of time for laboratory use, and lack of infrastructure in science laboratories. The conclusion in this research is that based on a review of literature studies, it is known that in the management of science laboratories in junior high schools, in some literature there are still inhibiting factors in its management. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty in this research is the existence of a literature study which discusses the management of science laboratories in supporting science learning.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The aim of this research is to explore the concept of science (biology, physics, and chemistry) in traditional ethnic medicine and food of the Duano, Kerinci, and Suku Anak Dalam Jambi. Methodology: This research examines the concept of science based on traditions and local knowledge as a source of science learning (biology, chemistry, and physics). Type of qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. Data was collected through observation, interviews, FGD, and documentation using Spradley model data analysis. Main Findings: The research found that the Duano Dalam tribe has local traditions and knowledge, such as menorah sunburn, marine ecology, lung, and gulai making. The Kerinci tribe has local knowledge about ethnic medicine and food, including Betemas/Tasapa and surian chili sauce. Meanwhile, the Anak Dalam (SAD) tribe has a tradition of Besale and local knowledge of Batangas and fish Pekasam food. The collection of traditions and local knowledge of each tribe has the potential to become a basis for science concepts in learning. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty or originality of the research entitled “Local Knowledge of Traditional Medicine and Ethnic Food of the Duano, Kerinci, and Anak Dalam Tribes as a Natural Science Learning Resource" lies in several key aspects. These aspects are 1) Local traditions and knowledge that can be used as a basis for science learning, 2) cultural and ethnographic perspectives as sources of science learning, 3) Interdisciplinary approaches, 4) Cross-Cultural Learning Potential, and 5) Conservation and Sustainable Practices.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The primary objective of this research was to describe teachers' views regarding the importance of students' persistent character in learning science when teaching class VII students at Junior high school. Methodology: This research used the qualitative Miles and Huberman method with a sample of 1 teacher representing 3 science teachers at Junior high schools in Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Researchers conducted interviews with science teachers. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Research data was taken using the interview method. The data analysis used is the results of interviews linked to theories from various literature. Main Findings: The findings of this research show that the results of teacher interviews at Junior high school, teachers said that persistence plays an important role in creating an effective learning environment. Students who have a high level of perseverance will achieve better results in understanding complex science concepts and prepare students who are tough and never stop learning. Novelty/Originality of this study: The benefit of this research is to know the importance of students' persistent character in understanding science learning. Hopefully, future researchers will be better off adding student and teacher research methods as samples and questionnaires or question research instruments. This aims to understand better the character development indicators of student persistence in learning.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to determine the significant differences in students' awareness of appearance between those admitted to universities during the COVID-19 pandemic and those admitted when the pandemic was deemed controlled in Japan. Methodology: The author hypothesized notable variations in the change of self-consciousness regarding appearance, particularly facial appearance, contingent upon the year of admission. To test this hypothesis, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 428 students in Japan attending universities as of Fiscal Year 2023 to gauge their facial self-consciousness. Main Findings: The initial analysis focused on changes in body image and facial self-consciousness. However, due to the predominant focus on facial aspects, a chi-squared test was allowed to determine the relationship between the year of admission and changes in facial self-consciousness. The results indicated a significant difference between the admission year and changes in facial self-consciousness, with the largest difference between 2020 and 2023. Novelty/Originality of this study: The author used Cross-tabulation and Chi-Square analyses to compare previous years with 2023. The findings showed significant differences in facial self-consciousness depending on the admission year, with a p-value of less than 0.05. The results indicated statistically significant differences in facial self-consciousness among students admitted in 2020. (p < .05, =.005, =.014, =.016).

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to determine whether the use of practical work can enhance General Science students’ science process skills acquisition and academic performance students in biology at Juaben Senior High School in Ghana. The study sought to answer two research questions and test one hypothesis at a 0.05 significance level. Methodology: The study used action research, and the sample consisted of 45 students, selected through convenience sampling. The study used various instruments, including pre- and post-tests, weekly intervention exercises, and scoring rubrics, to collect data. The analysis of the gathered data employed descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test to reveal and solidify the findings of the study. Main Findings: According to the study’s results, the use of practical work resulted in a steady increase in students’ acquisition of science process skills in each cycle, and all students were able to demonstrate some degree of required science process skills at the post-test level in contrast to the pre-test level. Furthermore, the pre- and post-test outcomes of a paired sample t-test analysis with a 95% confidence level showed a significant improvement in the academic performance of the students, attributed to practical work. Novelty/Originality of this study: This research update confirms the need for practical work in biology education and shows that incorporating it into biology lessons enhances students’ acquisition and development of science process skills, which in turn enhances their academic performance.
