Abstract

Platelet Concentrate (PC) is one of the blood products that is often used for transfusion. The storage temperature for TC products is in the range of 20-24OC which is the optimal temperature for bacterial growth. TC products contaminated with bacteria can cause a dangerous septic reaction. With the development of blood transfusion, apheresis methods emerged for the manufacture and aseptic collection of TC products. The apheresis method is considered safer than the conventional method which has a high chance of bacterial contamination. This study aims to compare the results of the examination of bacterial contamination in conventional TC products and apheresis methods. This study is a comparative descriptive study with a retrospective approach in the form of examining data on bacterial contamination of TC PMI Semarang City during 2019. The results of the examination of the TC apheresis method product showed that there were no TC products that were contaminated with bacteria (0.0%; 0 of 48), while in conventional method, there is 1 TC product that has bacterial contamination (0.3%; 1 out of 360). Fisher exact test on each TC product obtained p value = 1.00 (> 0.05) so that the difference that appears is not significant. Examination of bacterial contamination in conventional TC products and apheresis gave the same good results.

Abstract

Direct examination of worm eggs was found to be colorless, making it difficult to see under a microscope. The use of Eosin 2% is a simple method of examining worm eggs commonly used in medical diagnosis and research. Some of the drawbacks of Eosin are high price and its ingredients can damage the environment. Another dye to consider is the mangosteen peel. Mangosteen peel contains anthocyanins which produce a red color. This study aims to see whether mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L) can be used as an alternative for coloring intestinal nematode worm eggs. This study used a descriptive experimental method, namely observation by looking at the contrast, color absorption, and clarity of the egg in the microscope. The concentration used in this study were 1:1; 1:2; 1:3; 1:4 and 1:5. Staining using mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L) at a concentration (1: 2) showed the quality of the staining was close to the quality of the 2% eosin staining (control). This makes mangosteen peel extract (Garcinia mangostana L) can be used as an alternative to eosin in examining worm eggs.

Abstract

Carboxyhemoglobin is a substance formed due to the bonding of carbon monoxide with haemoglobin, which results in a lack of oxygen in the body, causing polycythemia which leads to an increase in blood hematocrit. motorized. This research method uses quantitative. The subjects of this study amounted to 30 people where the subjects were divided into 2 categories, namely smokers and motorcyclists. Data analysis using Shapiro Wilk and Rank Spearman Based on the research, it was found that the average COHb level was 6.06 while the average hematocrit in the normal range obtained p values ??> 0.05 for COHb 0.827, 0.836 and 0.827 while the hematocrit was 0.827, 0.836 and 0.827. This study concludes that there is no relationship between carboxyhemoglobin levels and hematocrit levels in final year students who are exposed to carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke and motor vehicle fumes.

Abstract

Fragrant pandan leaves (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb) is a type of plant that contains flavonoid compounds, alkaloids, saponins and tannins that can function as antibacterial. Streptococcus mutans is one of the bacteria that causes dental caries. Fragrant pandan leaf extract is expected to be an alternative to overcome bacterial infections such as dental caries. Dental caries is a disease caused by damage to the enamel layer that can extend to the nerves of the teeth so that it will cause cavities caused by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of fragrant pandan leaf extract against the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria that causes dental caries. This type of research is a laboratory experiment using the disc diffusion method. Fragrant pandan leaves were extracted by maceration method using 96% ethanol as solvent. The results of this study showed that the pandan fragrant leaf extract had an inhibitory effect on the growth of Streptococcus mutans bacteria at concentrations of 25%, 50%, and 75% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 10.3 mm, 13.3 mm, 17.6. mm. Positive control (amoxicilin) ??44.3 mm and negative control (aquadest) had no value to inhibit bacterial growth. The conclusion is that pandan leaves extract (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb) can inhibit Streptococcus mutans which is the bacteria that causes dental caries.

Abstract

East Nusa Tenggara Province has one of the highest malaria prevalence rates in Indonesia (1.99 percent) and is one of the locations where malaria is expected to be eradicated by 2030. There is a hypnozoite phase in P. vivax that might cause recurrence in patients. Only young erythrocytes are infected by P. vivax, resulting in a low parasite density in the blood. As a result, P. vivax is difficult to detect, necessitating the employment of an appropriate diagnostic procedure. With the advancement of molecular biology, it is now possible to diagnose malaria using the nested PCR method, resulting in more sensitive and specific results. The goal of this study was to identify P. vivax in 135 whole blood samples from people of Oenino District, South Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Teggara Province, using the nested PCR method. In this study, 8 (5.92%) of the samples tested positive for Plasmodium sp., with 5 (3.70%) of the samples being P. vivax. Patients with vivax malaria were mostly men (40.0%) and women (60.0%), with ages ranging from 31 to 50 years (40.0%), 41 to 50 years (20.0%), and > 50 years (20.0%). (40.0 % ). A total of three patients (40.0 %) experienced clinical signs of fever and anemia (20.0 %). Based on this results of a P. vivax examination, the PCR approach might be utilized. The discovery of P. vivax in the community needs o be concern for the local government, particularly in terms of malaria treatment monitoring and assessment in order to prevent relapse, increase malaria cases, and promote the effectiveness of malaria elimination initiatives.
