Abstract

Dental caries is a disease of the oral cavity caused by bacteria Streptococcus mutans. These diseases cause cavities thus damaging tissues of the teeth. One of the plants that have antibacterial activity is Mimosa pudicaFolium, which is known as one type of weed that spreads life. Active substance, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, triterpenes and glycosides. Prevention and appropriate treatment can affect the rate of healing of dental caries. One of the prevention is to maintain the cleanliness of your teeth and gums using a toothpaste. The aim of this study to create a gel toothpaste from ethyl aseatat extracts and fractions of ethanol extract of the leaves as well as comparing the Mimosa pudica antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. This research method made three formulations gel toothpaste with respective weight ratio of extracts and fractions are 5%, 10% and 15%. Gel toothpastes made tested antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans bacteria in vitro with the negative control is the solvent DMSO and a positive control ciprofloxacin 25 mg/disk. The medium used was media Muller Hinton Agar (MHA). The identification results showed that ethanol extract phytochemicals Mimosa pudica Folium contain flavonoids and tannins. While only a fraction of ethyl acetate contained flavonoids. The test results showed that the antibacterial activity of the negative control DMSO not provide a response to the bacteria Streptococcus mutans, where as the positive control ciprofloxacin give a strong response at a concentration of 25 µg / disk with a diameter of 25 mm inhibition zone. The test sample gel toothpaste from ethyl acetate fraction of ethanol extract putrimalu leaves the greatest response at 15% concentration of 150 mg/ml of 15.55 mm compared with a concentration of 5%, 10% and ethanol extract on all series of concentration. Keywords: antibacterials; Streptococcus mutants; gel toothpaste; Mimosa pudica Folium

Abstract

Salmonella typhi s a gram-negative bacteria in the form of coccus, is motile and pathogenic, which can cause a salmonellosis (typhoid fever). Treatment of thiophid fever generally uses paracetamol and chloramphenicol. The development of traditional medicine, such as earthworms and turmeric, which is believed to cure typhoid fever. This study aims to determine the activity of a combination of extracts of earthworm and turmeric on the growth of Salmonella typhi. This study applied an experimental laboratory method. The treatment group consisted of a combination of earthworm extract and turmeric rhizome extract at various concentrations (40%: 60%; 50%: 50%; 60%: 40%), solely earthworm extract, solely turmeric rhizome extract and chloramphenicol 30 µg as a control positive. Earthworm extract and turmeric rhizome extract were prepared using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent. Antibacterial activity test was performed in vitro using disk diffusion method against Salmonella typhi for 24 hours incubated at 37˚C and then the inhibitory zone (mm) was measured. The inhibitory zone was further analyzed using One Way ANOVA statistical analysis. The results showed that turmeric rhizome single extract better combination of earthworm extract and turmeric rhizome extract could inhibit Salmonella typhi growth optimally at a concentration of 50%: 50% with inhibitory value of 11.1 mm which was closer to the value of inhibition positive control ( 21.93 mm) compared with the other groups (p = 0.000). Keywords: antibacterial activity; earthworm extract; turmeric rhizome extract; concentration; Salmonella typhi; inhibitory power

Abstract

Menstruation is a natural occurrence and is commonly experienced by women. As a natural cycle, women certainly hope to undergo without physical or psychological disorders. However, some women experience Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). Prevalence of premenstrual syndrome in female students in Surabaya is: 39.2% experienced severe symptoms and 60.8% experienced mild symptoms. 70% of students at DIII Kebidanan Bangkalan experience PMS symptoms. The aim of the study was to determine the correlation of physical activity and nutritional status to the incidence of PMS. Research design employed observational analysis with cross sectional approach. The population consisted of all the students of Year 1,2 and 3 at DIII Kebidanan Bangkalan. The sample, proportional simple random sampling technique was 119 students. . Independent variables were physical activity and nutritional status and dependent variable was incidence of PMS. Data collection used questionnaires, stature meters and scales. Data analysis technique used Rank Sperman test Statistical tests show a positive correlation between physical activity and PMS, positive correlation between nutritional status and PMS. The milder the physical activity, the tendency for PMS gets milder. The heavier the nutritional status the tendency for PMS gets heavier. Recent findings: PMS is not always influenced by physical activity factors. There is a correlation between physical activity and nutritional status and PMS for the students of DIII Kebidanan Bangkalan. It is hoped that there will be more pleasant social interaction among students so that they feel there is excitement and they create a balanced menu so that the nutritional status of students is maintained
