Abstract

Programs of climate change adaptation strategy and policies related to human migration as a consequence of climate change are needed to facilitate the optimization of environmental migrants. This study aims to examine the response to the impact of climate changes in the context of migration management by the central and local governments. Data for this article are based on the study of the Research Center of Population - LIPI on migration and climate change in North Lombok and East Lombok. The study used a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The results of this study show that migration management policies or programs that are specially prepared to address the impacts of climate change have not yet formulated, neither at the provincial or district levels. The existing migration management policies are more related to efforts to reduce unemployment problems, improve the welfare of Indonesian workers abroad as well as the quality of their lives. Therefore, the provincial government of West Nusa Tenggara needs to respond this situation by formulating migration management policies and programs in the context of climate change, mainly related to the climate change adaptation activities. The plan should be designed to build resilience and adaptation capacity to overcome the adverse impacts of climate change.

Abstract

Nowadays, many health problems are caused by unhealthy lifestyle and neighborhood conditions. This situation can be seen from a substantial contribution of environmental diseases, such as Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) and diarrhea, to the morbidity and mortality of children under age five in Indonesia. In line with this problem, this study aimed to find out general description and determinants of environmentally based diseases in Indonesia by utilizing multinominal logistic regression method. This study used the 2013 Riset Kesehatan Dasar (Riskesdas). The result of the research showed that more than one-third of children under-five in Indonesia had suffered ARI disease and 1 of every 25 of them had suffered diarrhea. This study also found that similarities between morbidity determinants of ARI and diarrhea, such as slum dwelling, mothers education level, mother’s behavior in washing hands with soap when their hands are dirty, mother’s behavior in washing hands after they have defecated, as well as sex and age of the children under-five. Moreover, mother’s education level was the highest contributor amongst the determinants of morbidity of ARI and diarrhea in children under five. It is recommended that the government can further improve the education of women to increase women's knowledge about the healthcare environment and healthy behavior.

Abstract

Migration could be one of the causes of inequality in population distribution in Indonesia. Based on data from the 2010 Population Census, provinces in Java and Sumatera became the primary destination for recent migrants. In the meantime, these two islands have already become the highest population density islands in Indonesia. This situation could result in the broader gap of interregional population distribution. By using population census and intercensal survey data, this paper aims to analyze the general description of recent migrants in 16 provinces in Java and Sumatera islands during five periods, i.e., 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. This study also identifies pull factors which influenced the in-migrants flow to these provinces. In general, the concentration of recent in-migrants in Java islands in 1995 started to change toward Riau and Riau Island Province in the 2000s. Moreover, regression analysis of panel data showed that the share of the industrial sector and unemployment rate have a significant effect on the number of recent migrants in provinces in Java and Sumatera.

Abstract

Contraceptive use is one of the essential influential factors to the birth rate of Indonesia. This article aims to identify the profile of contraceptive use in rural and urban areas based on the socio-economic and demographic characteristics as well as the influential factors. This study conducted a further analysis of Performance Monitoring and Accountability 2020 (PMA2020) survey in 2015, by applying univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. The results of the analysis show a similar average number of children for both rural and urban areas; this situation is in accordance with the program of National Population and Family Planning (BKKBN). In addition, the educational and economic status of women in union of childbearing age in rural areas has improved along with the increasing number of women graduated from senior high school as well as the improvement of their wealth. However, many women in rural and urban areas never have been visited by family planning officers as well as do not have health insurance, such as BPJS. The finding of the study also shows that the higher the economic status of women in rural areas, the higher their chances to use contraception. Conversely, the higher the economic status of women in urban areas, the lower their participation in family planning program. Therefore, specific, intensive and equal interventions to IEC and advocacy programs are needed for both rural and urban areas.

Abstract

This paper aims to identify the relationship between population growth and disaster incidents, especially flood in the city. Surabaya was chosen as a study area because of its large population and regular flooding incidents. The analysis is done by using secondary data, namely number of population as well as disaster incidents. The method used is quantitative descriptive analysis with correlation test, by using data of population growth rate and density, as well as data of flooding incidents. The study shows that population growth has a significant relationship with the number of flood events. Besides that, there is a tendency of sub-districts with high growth rate also have the highest number of flooding incidents. However, sub-districts with low growth rate with dense population also have high flood incidents. A large number of population is one of the triggers for the increase of disaster occurrence. It is because the high population growth in the limited urban land encourages residents to live in disaster-prone areas and the occurrence of inappropriate land conversion’s allocation. The reducing of water absorbent areas affects the runoff and the water discharge that enter the city, particularly when the rainy season arrives

Abstract

The 2010 Indonesia census report shows that about 30 percent of the internal migrant population belongs to youths aged between 15 and 24 years old. A substantial proportion of the young migrants moves to pursue tertiary education. It is important to examine the spatial dynamics of the graduate youth migrants since their presence in an area can represent the provision of economic opportunity as well as acceleration of economic growth and investment. This study analysed data from the ‘Youth Migration in Indonesia’ survey by the Research Center for Population, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (2016) which was conducted in Sleman district, Special Region of Yogyakarta, one of the prominent destination areas for college student migrants within Indonesia. It is found that about one-third of the migrants intend to remain in their current residential city, and the rest express their intention to re-migrate, either returning to their hometowns or moving to new areas. The demographic and spatial attributes of the youths of the migrants are related to their future staying preferences. The findings also suggest that critical motivations for future migration by the educated migrants are employment situations, social ties, and urban facilities.
