Abstract

International migration is usually motivated by economic reasons. However, many people also migrate overseas to continue studies in higher-level education. This paper analyses the role of Indonesian students abroad, especially those who are members of the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) in protecting Indonesian workers (TKI). The research is focused on PPI in the country with the highest number of Indonesian migrant workers, namely Malaysia. This study applied a qualitative approach to collect primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected through interviews, and secondary data was gained through literature review. The research shows that PPI, as an agent of change, has a role in protecting migrant workers. The PPI has various kinds of contributions such as expressing ideas and discourses to protect international migrant workers, becoming a mediator (in solving conflicts involving the workers), facilitating shelter, providing repatriation assistance, legal assistance and advocacy, as well as economic empowerment and education activities for migrant workers and their families.

Abstract

One of the tasks of  Kampung KB (Keluarga Berencana) is to reduce the proportion of unmet need for family planning by utilizing family planning field officers and gaining support from related institutions. This study aims to analyze the process of handling the unmet need for family planning in two Kampung KB in Cianjur Regency. The research used a qualitative approach in forms of individual in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Data are analyzed descriptively based on case studies. The findings indicate that data recording instruments used daily in the research sites have not been able to identify groups of women with unmet need for family planning. Therefore, the existing services of family planning information have not been based on the needs of the target group. After the formation of Kampung KB, family planning information services and contraception services were more vigorous. While all of the services ease couples of childbearing age with unmet need for family planning to get related information and contraception, monitoring and evaluation activities still cannot be carried out because of the unavailability of officers as well as the target group and post-service data. In addition, there is no clear division of labor between the board Kampung KB and other family planning field officers in each stage of the handling of unmet need for family planning.

Abstract

Adolescents play an essential role in development in the era of globalization, but they are also in a vulnerable period to do risky behaviors related to sexuality. This paper is based on a 2017 survey of 401 adolescents in Medan city to examine the determinants of risk behavior related to sexuality. The survey shows that 11% of respondents have high-risk behavior, 34% are moderate, and 55% are low. Pearson’s chi-square analysis found significant variables related to respondent characteristics, family background, peers, information technology, and non-sexual risky behaviors. Furthermore, the results of multivariate logistic regression showed the determinants of risky adolescent behaviors related to sexuality were influenced by eight factors: sex, age of adolescence, has brothers and sex (interaction), have peers who have had premarital sex, have homosexual friends, frequency of accessing the internet, have ever smoking, and have ever consumed drugs. This study recommends the need for policies/programs that provide information to adolescents and parents about sexuality and gender identity, pornography, as well as reproductive health in a comprehensive and up-to-date manner.

Abstract

Sendai Framework 2015-2030 highlights the importance of build back better after a disaster. Post-disaster management is an important stage to reach this goal.  In general, rehabilitation process tends to focus on physical aspects and rarely considering people as the center. This paper aims to examine the rehabilitation process after earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi in 2018 focused on opportunities and challenges to build back better. The temporary shelter (Huntara) is selected as the case study as it is the most urgent need after disaster. Data analysis is based on literature reviews and primary data from rapid assessment in December 2018 in Palu, Sigi, and Donggala. Based on the people-centered concept, results show that most of the temporary shelters are provided as a product and less concern about its function as a process. However, some temporary shelters have considered the process that comes from civil society’s initiatives. They propose Huntara as a transition by proposing a feeling of comfort and secure. To conclude, survivors need to be involved in the rehabilitation process to build back better.

Abstract

Significant improvement in information, communication and technology, followed by increased transportation access has made circular mobility much easier. Although circular mobility is not a well-established concept, it refers to repeated migration experiences between origin and destination areas, and there is no intention to stay permanently in any particular destination. This paper aims to assess current types of population mobility, with special focus on circular mobility. Besides literature review, the analysis on this study based on recent studies on population mobility conducted by Research Centre for Population - Indonesian Institute of Sciences. The results show that there is a tendency for increased flow of circular mobility. In general, circular mobility is motivated by occupation and education reasons. Migrant workers still intend to migrate to other destinations that offer better job opportunities. Moreover, students plan to move to origins or move to new destinations after completing their education

Abstract

Adolescent fertility has become concerns at both national and international levels. The government of Indonesia views pregnancy and teenage childbearing as a problem that must be overcome. Giving birth in adolescence can lead to low levels of education. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between adolescent fertility which is teenage childbearing and women’s educational attainment in Indonesia. The data source used is the Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) 2017. Based on IDHS 2017, among women who have given birth. Around 31.5% of women gave birth for the first time before the age of 20. Of those, 3.8% gave birth out of wedlock, and 9.8% gave birth after postconception marriage. By using the instrumental variable (IV) method, the results of the study show that there is a negative association between giving birth in adolescent and women’s educational attainment. After controlling for individual and community/environmental characteristics, women who experienced first birth during their adolescence have 3.5 years of education lower than women who give birth for the first time at the age of 20 years and above.

Abstract

Having a lot of children requires costs for fulfilling clothes, food, health, education and entertainment needs. Nowadays, families put more consideration at the value of children in terms of quality, not just quantity. The value of children is related to the number of children desired that mainly influenced by micro-level factors in the household. Nevertheless, there are indications that macro socio-economic factors also influence the number of desired fertility. This study uses correlation analysis to see the relationship between the average number of wanted children and macro variables such as contraceptive use, human development index (HDI), income per capita, proportion of poor population, age of first marriage, expenditure per capita per year, and woman’s work participation. The results show that the variables of contraceptive use, HDI, percentage of poor people, expenditure per capita, and female labour participation rate are statistically proven to affect the average number of desired children, while the variable income per capita and age at first marriage are not statistically significant. This study argued that the number of desired children is not only influenced by household micro variables but also socio-economic macro variables.
