Jurnal Kependudukan Indonesia (JKI) is an open access, multidisciplinary journal that publishes articles related to issues of population dynamics, employment, family, and human ecology. Population dynamics includes fertility, mortality, and migration. Employment covers the quantity and quality of human resources, the preparation and utilisation of labour force, education, wage issues and industrial relations. Family encompasses maternal and child health, adolescence, and ageing. Human Ecology covers the relationship between population, natural resources, and environment These issues can be analysed from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and can also be associated with strategic issues, such as gender, political identity, climate change, disaster, unemployment, and public policies and services.

Abstract

Based on the overview of several socio-demographic publications, this paper examine the issue of rural-urban migration and the consequences of urbanization. Urbanization is a complexs phenomenon which strongly determined of rural-urban migration. Migration to large metropolitan cities from rural areas and small towns has put enormous pressure in place of destination and created many sosio-economic and demographic problems. Metropolitan cities has becomed the consentration of urban poor which mostly holds the informal jobs and live in squatter areas.Keywords: Rural-urban migration, urbanization, sosial and demographic impacts

Abstract

This paper focus on the decision making models which are initially applied in the economic, politic and psychology science. Only a few papers explore this issue, most of its reveal about the result study or the output instead of discussing the process of decision making. Discussion about the usage of decision making model as the analytic tool and the application of the model is quite few. Based on that, this paper try to explore the decision making process in relating to the fertility behavior by applying rational approach that was developed by Simon and Carley. Fertility behavior is important to analyze because as a variable, fertility contribute to the poverty condition in North Sulawesi border area (2006- 2007/ Therefore more deeply understanding about the decision making process related to the fertility matters, is necessary. Data based on the study of socio demographic poverty that was conducted by the PPK-LIPI in the North Sulawesi border area. Based on the decision making model it is indicated that the economic factor play an important role in the rationality of the fertility decision making.Keywords: Decision making model, rational approach, fertility behavior, North Sulawesi border area

Abstract

Television is not only a powerful medium but also provides promising jobs for a lot of people from actress and actors to supporting system such as directors, scripts writers and talent scouting. Accordingly, sinetron is important subject of studies. There are a lot of critics against sinetron, as it shows traditional role of men and women, good and bad. But Indonesia s soap opera or sinetron tend to shows women as violence doers and men have limited power toward her. Women do violence in the name of love and family. Regarding the powerful iconic ability, sinetron has potential to educate and to disseminate ways to solve contemporary social situation face by Indonesian. This role actually is not something new, as in the New Orde, sinetron were used for development purpose. This has not yet becoming a perspective or behaviour toward the sinetron as powerful medium.Keywords: Gender, Soap opera, television, identity, violence

Abstract

Berkarir bukanlah merupakan hal baru dan tidak dilarang bagi perempuan Indonesia. Namun demikian, apa yang dimaksudkan dengan karir, temyata sangat beragam dan tidak terbatas hanya pada lingkup kerja dalam dimensi ruang publik. Tulisan ini menggambarkan makna karir bagi dua puluh perempuan pekerja dari berbagai posisi pekerjaan di suatu perusahaan industri pengolah makanan. Makna dan citra perempuan karir terbentuk dan terintemalisasikan berdasarkan pengalaman sejak kecil baik atas pengamatan di dalam kehidupan rumah tangga orangtuanya maupun lingkungan sekitar. Perempuan karir tidak hanya perempuan yang bekerja di sektor publik, tapijuga perempuan yang tinggal di rumah yang bekerja sebagai ibu rumah tangga mengurus anak dan suaminya. Perempuan karir yang dianggap sukses adalah perempuan yang tidak hanya sukses dalam kerja di ruang publik yang dicirikan dengan pencapaian posisi kerja atau jabatan yang tinggi, tetapi dia juga harus sukses dalam membina rumah tangga.Kata Kunci: Makna karir, karir perempuan, pekerja perempuan

Seperti halnya buku yang di tulis oleh Winarno Soerakhmad ini. Meskipun telah bermunculan buku-buku lain yang membahas ten tang pendidikan, buku ini menawarkan perspektif lain tentang sebuah pendidikan. Perspektif dari seorang seorang yang telah lama berkecimpung di dunia pendidikan sehingga pengetahuan dan pemahamannya tentang pendidikan di lndones~a tidak dapat diragukan lagi. Pengalaman selama puluhan tahun yang dialami penulis sebagai seorang praktisi pendidikan membuat penulis kerap diundang oleh berbagai instansi untuk menulis dan mempresentasikan hal-hal yang terkait dengan dunia pendidikan di Indonesia. Abstract

Sending labor abroad is not a new phenomenon in Indonesia. Poverty and lack ofjobs, particularly in village areas, are the main reason why sending labor abroad is always happened each year. East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, is one of good examples. Thousand of peoples go abroad as workers in some of blue collar and domestic areas. Most of them are uneducated and have no skills. They come to Malaysia as plantation workers or to Saudi Arabia as servants. This field of works put them in a disadvantage position. As reported by the media, Indonesian workers are always the victims of their employer treatment, such as unpaid working, physically or sexually abuse, or over hours working. This article examines the trend and the impacts of sending workers abroad from two villages in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. As the research results, people in these villages go to Malaysia and Saudi Arabia to get higher income, to earn money to build a house and to fulfill their family needs. But there are some social and cultural impacts of this process, such as stigma ofjamal (widow of a husband who went to Malaysia) and durab (widower of a wife who went to Saudi Arabia), and divorce rate. Based on this analysis, it is important for the Indonesian government to reconsider sending workers abroad is the only solution for the employment' problems.Keywords: Labor sending, trend, social and cultural impacts.
