Abstract

This study examines how the song ‘Happy House’ by Siouxsie and the Banshees experienced a resurgence and spread on TikTok, highlighting the importance of understanding how old songs become relevant in the digital age. This study highlights TikTok’s features and user engagement as key levers in this process. The researchers used qualitative methods through a netnography approach to explore the cultural factors that drove the song’s success, including TikTok’s algorithm, user engagement, and content production processes. The researchers analyzed user engagement, comments, and viral content trends to uncover how the platform facilitated the song’s resurgence. The findings identified three key components that drove the song’s popularity: TikTok’s app features, viral trends, and user-generated content, including remixes and covers. These factors provide the possibility for older songs to effectively connect with younger audiences. In addition, the song’s lyrics and themes resonate emotionally with contemporary narratives, which further enhances its appeal. The study concludes that TikTok plays an active role in shaping music consumption needs. By allowing genres of the past to resonate with modern audiences, TikTok preserves and revives musical heritage. This process fosters intergenerational connections through shared cultural expression, highlighting the platform’s power in the digital landscape.

Abstract

Handicrafts have provided employment opportunities to thousands of rural women in Bangladesh. By creating earning capacities, engagement with this industry can help these women improve their access to social and economic resources. This paper focuses on the social and economic conditions of the women involved in the handicraft industry while also addressing the barriers women encounter in this handicraft industry. This study follows both qualitative and quantitative approaches and collects primary data from 20 women owners and 120 women workers of handicraft businesses in Jamalpur District, Bangladesh, through interviews and questionnaires. A multi-stage sampling technique was followed to collect data from the sampled participants. The study found that handicrafts have significantly empowered rural women both socially and economically. However, the barriers like low wages, excessive increases in prices of raw materials, unawareness among the handicraft workers about the training institutions and their functions, unavailability of training programs to all levels of women involved in the handicraft industry, lack of capital, exclusion of small entrepreneurs from government incentives have greatly affected the further flourishment of women involved in handicrafts. If these barriers are resolved, handicrafts can play a very important role in the social and economic empowerment of women.

Abstract

Gender equality is one of the foundations of inclusive learning environments, as emphasized in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In higher education, the institutionalization of Gender and Development (GAD) programs was initiated to contribute to the attainment of SDG 5. Using grounded theory research design, 20 higher education teachers’ situated knowledge, pedagogical practices, and common challenges in mainstreaming gender equality in classrooms were explored. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Results indicated that while most teachers were well aware of various gender-related issues, policies, and statutory laws, some of them were not able to mobilize effective practices that strengthen gender equality. Common challenges in GAD mobilization were a lack of an integration framework and GAD specialists, a contextualized plan, cultural differences, low prioritization, coordination gaps, a lack of comprehensive knowledge about gender equality, and inappropriate implementation approaches. Drawn from the participants’ responses, the researchers generated a theory labeled as “Praxis-Oriented Construction of Gender-Responsive Classrooms,” which revealed how gender equality was understood, practiced, and challenged in higher education. The researchers conclude that gender equality has not yet been successfully mainstreamed in higher education; it still needs to have clear and well-supervised integration policies to make higher education classrooms genuinely gender-responsive.

Abstract

Most public university students in Bangladesh have career-related issues in the form of either career indecision or making the wrong choice. Hence, the study aims to identify the factors that influence public university students' job choices. The study employed a quantitative approach. Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) was selected purposively, then using simple random sampling to get 100 participants between January - July 2023. The study discovered that social and cultural elements, environmental factors, economic concerns, educational considerations, career aid and counseling, and personality qualities all had an impact on their career choices. However, economic factors, especially, motivate them to choose highly paid and status-oriented jobs. In addition, the students (94%) who were aware of career choice, possessed (60%) to work in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) for respect, social safety, and financial stability. Moreover, only 40 percent of the students showed interest in working in other government jobs, non-government jobs, and a few of them identified business as their next workplace. In a nutshell, having a job in BCS is the priority of students, which reflects the notion of dependency on the government instead of being an entrepreneur and self-employed. However, the findings will be useful to scholars, students, job seekers, and the general public who are worried about career choices, both locally and abroad.
