Abstract

Reading English literary text for Indonesian students is not an easy task since reading text for literary experience is different from reading for information. This explains why reading across the curriculum or reading in the content has become a critical component of many school improvement efforts. Helping students learn from textbooks is more complicated than asking them to read the text and answer question. Teachers not only should convince them to develop effective strategies in order to read different texts, but also to develop their thoughtful interpretations of what they read and how they approach the task in order to be active paticipants in the classroom. Literature circles which offer the potential to promote reading for enjoyment by harnessing the social networks that exist within the peer group provide a way for students to promote their reading comprehension as they read, discuss, and respond to books.

Abstract

Teaching English to young learners (TEYL) is very important to do. Many benefits can be got since young learners have much potential to be developed. However, Teaching English to young learners is not easy. Most teachers feel very frustrated because they do not have experiences and knowledge how to cope with the young learners. Actually TEYL can be both a rewarding and a demanding experience if teachers do appropriate activities in the classroom. To make this experience easier, more enjoyable and meaningful for both, teachers must identify what learning a language in school requires for young children. Subsequently, teachers need to use the basic principles of teaching young learners as the bases of selecting appropriate activities as offers to the young learners. Therefore, this paper discusses young learners’ needs in learning English and provides some meaningful and fun activities as choices to be implemented.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to illuminate the motivation of the students at English Department of Sriwijaya Polytechnics toward their online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic era. Due to sudden transformation from traditional face-to-face learning approach to remotely digital learning, some present studies revealed that students’ motivation in online learning was affected both intrinsically and extrinsically. Using snowball sampling, there were eight students participated in individual interviews and fourteen students in focus group interviews. The gained data from both interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. It was revealed that the students’ motivation toward their online learning was intrinsically affected more by their ambition to learn new knowledge and enjoyment in experiencing new learning method. It was also influenced extrinsically by external regulation and environmental condition. However, amotivation or the state of lack motivation also happened due to poor external supporting facilities.

Abstract

The main problem of this study was “Was there any significant difference between the students who were taught reading recount texts through tri focus Steve Snyder to the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 12 Palembang and those who were not?”. This study applied a Quasi-Experimental design. The population in this study was all the tenth grade students and the sample consisted of 36 students which were taken by using purposive sampling. To analyze the data, the writer used independent sample t-test by using SPSS 23. The result of this study showed that the experimental group students’ average score in pre-test was 60.69, and in post-test it was 78.19 while the control group students’ average score in pre-test was 60.14 and in post-test was 68.68. From the t-test calculation, it was found that t-obtained value was 4.099 and the value of t-table was 1.994 with significance level 0.05 with df 70 for two tailed test. Since the t-obtained was higher than t-table, 4.099 > 1.994, it meant that the Null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and Alternative hypothesis was accepted. It could be interpreted that there was a significant difference between the students who were taught reading recount texts through tri focus Steve Snyder to the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 12 Palembang and those who were not.
