Abstract

Gender issues come into being in Muslim world as a result of their interactions with modern western civilization through either colonialism or other ways. In addition to this external factor which can be regarded as triggering factor by which Muslim women’s awareness of their duties and rights started to emerge and develop, domination of men-biased interpretation of Islamic teachings also played an essential role in triggering the discours on gender issues. One of the responses to this issue is what so called Islamic feminism in Muslim world is a reaction to unjust but prevailing understanding and practice of Islamic teachings with regard to gender relation in favour of men. There are various issues related to this topic, but this article only contains the discussion on several Quranic verses regarding gender relation stating at the end that any interpretations of these verses is subject to change due to its profane nature. The principle is one: the core of Quranic spirit is equality. Finally, since the social fact of inequality of Muslim womens is very much influenced and shaped by men-biased interpretations, so Islamic Feminism is in fact more related to patriarchal value rather than divine one Keywords : Feminisme Islam, Kontekstualisasi prinsip ajaran Islam dan Relasi GenderCopyright © 2011 by Kafa`ah All right reservedDOI : 10.15548/jk.v1i1.33

Abstract

It was one too many of the lack of information concerning Islam and understanding textual doctrines of Islam,  used to spread out traditional believes considering gender bias.  Gender bias, which is represented in form of women subordination in communal interactions, is generally sparkled by common misperception on viewing women’s role in society, whether it is indigenous or merely derived from social construction. This misperception, of course, has placed men at superior position and crystallized as the culture of patriarchy. Moreover, this unfair patriarchal culture is often employed as approaches in interpreting religious texts that throw women away to the lower level in social status. In her explanation, by mentioning some social and culture of people who lived in Arabic areas, Nawal el Sa’adawi  indicated that gender equity is one of basic principles of al-Qur’an, the main source of religious texts for moslem community. But unfortunately,  that gender-related Qur’anic verses are often misinterpreted and misused. Therefore, she thought that reinterpretation of religious doctrine on women issues is exteremely fundamental. By linguistic literature points of view, Nawal el Sa’adawi tried to described and criticized the traditions of  moslem society in Arabic areas relating to gender bias.  Keywords : Bias Gender, Masyarakat Arab dan BudayaCopyright © 2011 by Kafa`ah All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jk.v1i1.36

Though the term of bundo kanduang is still recognized within Minang society, but its understanding no longer reflect its ideal meaning. In daily life, bundo kanduang refers to to the pattern of behavior and function in term of matrilineal society.
