Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe how the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text. This research was conducted at MTS-TI Batu Belah. The subject of this research consists of 26 students of the second grade. The method of this research is a descriptive research. The researcher used two instruments, test and questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it showed that the average of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension of descriptive text was 49. It was categorized in Poor level. Furthermore, the students’ responses showed that 21 the students like reading. Meanwhile, 5 the students didn’t like reading english text. 21 the students want to learne about new vocabulary before used dictionary. Meanwhile, 5 the students didn’t understand about the vocabulary without used dictionary. 16 the students can finding specific information. Meanwhile, 10 the students felt difficult in understand English well. 13 the students felt easy to find the main idea and the supporting detail. Meanwhile, 13 the students feel difficult to find the main idea . 16 the students felt didn’t difficult in guessing the title of the text. Meanwhile, 10 the students felt the title was difficult to guess. 12 the students felt didn’t like to answer the questions about vocabulary. Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe how the students’ vocabulary mastery at MTS-TI Batu Belah. The subject of this research consist of 26 students of the second grade. The method of this research is descriptive research. The researcher used two instruments, those were test and questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it showed that the average of the students’ achievement in vocabulary was 77. It was categorize in good level. Furthermore, the students’ responses showed that 65% students like to learn English. Meanwhile, 35% students didn’t like English. 38% students tried to guess new vocabulary before used dictionary. Meanwhile, 62% students felt difficult to get meaning without used dictionary. 50% students felt easy to understand the meaning of vocabulary. Meanwhile, 50% students didn’t understand about meaning of the vocabulary in English. 31% students felt easy to use appropriate word. Meanwhile, 69% students didn’t understand to use appropriate word.

Abstract

Some problems in listening comprehension often faced by the students of English Study Program of University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai, such as low listening comprehension, doing assignment without showing good comprehension on answer sheet. The descriptive research aims to identify the factors influence the students problem in listening comprehension at the second semester of English Study Program of University of Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai. in academic year 2017/2018. The instruments are questionaire, interview and documentation. The finding of the research shows two factors influence the students listening comprehension, the internal and external factors. Internal factors are the students self-rating to listening comprehension, Students Perceptions Related to Other Language Skills, Strategy to Enhance Listening Skills, students Statement about the Content of the Listening Text, Students Concentration. The external factors are the Speaker and the physical setting.

Abstract

The successful English learners are determined by their ability to communicate in English in daily activities, especially in the teaching and learning process However, it is not a simple task. Some English learners are still struggle to use English to communicate since English is used as Foreign Language in Indonesia. It is experienced even the students have learned English for long years. The university students, English Department students also need struggle to communicate in English. One of the handicaps in acquiring the ability to communicate in a foreign language is called communication apprehension. The individuals fear in facing the communication either real or anticipated causes the students to avoid the communication activity. Then, it resulted the less progress of the students in using the language. Oral communication apprehension is experienced by everyone, especially foreign language learners. It seems as a potential inhibitor for the students to develop their competence and skills in communication. In fact, the existence of communication apprehension are not realized. Unfortunately, the foreign language learners are not consider on it.

Abstract

The development of technology today makes the learning system for students develop rapidly. One of the media that can be used as teaching material is social media. This study aims to determine the effect of social media: WhatsApp on students' speaking skills. The sample of this study is the second semester class A as the experimental class and the second semester class B as the control class. The research design used is quasi-experimental with purposive sampling technique. The instruments used to collect data are pre-posttest and questionnaire and photo documentation.
