Abstract

The study described how the character based-learning of anti-corruption was situated in the English classroom by utilizing and creating digital comics in the Indonesian EFL context. The subjects of the study were the first semester students of State Islamic Institute of Kediri (IAIN Kediri). The research method used for this study was a descriptive qualitative research. It described the implementation of character based-learning of anti-corruption through digital comics which was explained in details from the beginning to the end of the study. Furthermore, the data were analyzed qualitatively. The data obtained from the results of recording on teaching learning process, the students’ participations, and the students’ scores on the project result of digital comics. It showed that the digital comics could raise the students’ enthusiasm to study English which could be shown from the result of observation during the teaching and learning process, the activeness of students’ participations in discussions and presentations, and the outstanding result of students’ creations on digital comics. The number of respondents in the research are 34 students. Based on the data on the category of content, grammar and choice of words, it showed that out of 34 students, 88% students performed excellently in organizing the story and delivering anti-corruption messages, while 12% of them performed good. Further, in terms of visualization, the researcher found that 32 students (94%) showed excellent visualization and arrangement of pictures or characters while 2 students (6%) performed good. At last, in presenting the comics, 71% of the students were excellent in fluency, mastery, and interactive performances, 8 students (23%) performed good, and the rest performed fairly good.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe maxims of cooperation principle on podcast of Deddy Corbuzier and Nadiem Makarim with the theme “Having college is not important”. This research used qualitative descriptive method and pragmatics approach by using the maxim of cooperation principle that explained the principle that are often used by humans in interacting with benefits so that speech is more easily understood by the interlocutor, So the conversation is created that accept each other. In the analysis data the researcher explained the data by describing maxim of quantity, quality, relevance and manner on the podcast.  Data source in this research is podcast video of Deddy Corbuzier and Nadiem Makarim that the researcher watched in the Deddy Corbuzier’s you tube podcast with the theme “Having college is not important”.The data are dialogue and the analysis was described descriptively.Data collection technique used in this research by listening and talking technique and note-taking technique while all the conversation between Deddy Corbuzier and Nadiem Makarim are analyzed by using the maxims of cooperation principle. The presenting data by using Data reduction the first stage in this data analysis is data reduction. The goal is to knowing about valid data or not valid and then  presentation the data, In presenting data, the data has been reduced will be described in detail and obviously then connected with The relevant theories that would l answer the problem of research and the last, conclusion, the conclusion is made for answer the problem formulation so that it can obtained information about the working principle same in podcast of Deddy Corbuzier and Nadiem Makarim with the theme “Having college is not important. This research result was found 9 data which were 2 maxims of quantity, the maxim that make speaker convey information based on speaker’s question, 1 maxim of quality, 4 maxim of relevance, the maxim that make speaker convey information must be one line with speaker’s question either yes or no, 2 maxims of manner obtained from the maxim of praise included in maxim of manner, while maxim of politeness and generosity included in maxim of manner were not found.

Abstract

TOEFL is categorized as a Norm-Referenced Test because scores are associated based on tiered counts or has percentage stages. Based on an initial survey, the biggest difficulty of TOEFL is known having high difficulty level. Think Pair Share (TPS) as a cooperative learning model for more effective learning system in providing and improving communication skills both orally and written within the scope of academic understanding through TOEFL. The application of TPS is expected to increase student's TOEFL score, learning quality and provide the opportunity to find out strategies on TOEFL success and further develop students’ skill. TPS is a type of cooperative learning designed in the form of discussion that can improve thinking skills, communication skills and encourage student participation in class. This research is aimed to improve the ability of Health Information Management students in facing TOEFL test by applying the cooperative learning model Think Pair Share (TPS). After applying the model, it found that the average score of students' TOEFL scores as well has increased from previously 56.93 to 83.68. This can be seen during the English learning process in the classroom. In learning by using Think Pair Share (TPS) model, students are required to discuss simple and effective ways to solve TOEFL questions with their friends by expressing the result of his thoughts.

Abstract

This study aims to figure out the structure of Anna Karenina’s film and Leo Tolstoy’s worldview that is manifested in the film. This study utilizes the theory of genetic structuralism by Lucien Golman. This qualitative research is focused on the dialog of the movie and the author's social life. In order to complete the research, researchers have to go through a number of steps. The researcher first carefully watched the film and then collected some excerpts from the dialogue of the movie. Furthermore, the researcher reads several references to gain some information about the author's social life. The result of this study showed that the film 'Anna Karenina' expresses a Feminist-Liberal worldview. The social structure was dominated by the lower bourgeoisie, specifically Russian women, which hampered the development of material family life in accordance with modern society standards at the time.

Abstract

This study investigated the frequency of students’ habit of underlining text and the correlation between the habit and their reading comprehension. Quantitative research was carried out with specific purposes on 73 first-semester students at department of English Language Education (PBI) of Ar-Raniry University (UIN). Based on the Likert scale, the data analysis of the questionnaire showed 72.9% of students had a good underlining habit, followed by the percentage of comprehension test was 65.8%. Moreover, the Pearson formula resulted from the correlation coefficient was 0.699 that indicated both variables had a high correlation.
