Abstract

In the global era, English is a mandatory material that must be used as teaching material for midwifery students. This is important; because it cannot be denied that midwives in Indonesia often encounter obstacles when serving foreigners. It is quite difficult for them to have a dialogue with tourists, even though at this time our country is increasingly being visited by foreigners, whether for holidays, research, or student exchange. It is not impossible, to engage or converse with them while they are experiencing health problems, or just need a check-up. This study is aimed at describing the types of midwifery students’ attitude toward English conversation, elaborate realization of Midwifery students’ attitude toward English conversation, and reasons for the midwifery student’s reality their attitudes toward English conversation. Qualitative study is conducted. The subjects of this study were 55 students. The data were collected by interviews. Some results, firstly they were positive and negative attitudes toward English conversation class, nine realizations, and four reasons of the students realized i.e. (1) language pride, (2) awareness of language norms, (3) motivation to get the job, and (4) lack of skill. It was concluded the students attitude varied as to positive and negative ones and real numerous manners affected by several factors.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has spread to all parts of the world including Indonesia. The existence of the Covid 19 problem has changed many aspects of human life, including in the field of education. Therefore, the use of social media devices has become an alternative learning tool in providing material to students during the Covid-19 pandemic. With this new challenge, every human being is challenged to change old habits into new ones, especially in the world of education. This study aims at determining the EFL students' perceptions regarding the use of various social media tools to support online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The method used in this research was qualitative using a descriptive approach. The sampling technique used in this study was random sampling by distributing questionnaires via google form and conducting interviews with 25 selected students to explore students' perceptions about the use of social media in English learning. The data that has been collected is analyzed in an elaborated way. In the application of learning using social media, there are many positive responses given by students, but there are also students who experience some problems in the application of learning using social media. Even among them, they also experience various difficulties in using it, especially in internet access. The results show that the use of social media platforms provides several advantages in its implementation, such as the flexibility of time, the effectiveness of its use, ease, interactive, fun use. However, the challenges are very monotonous learning activities, spending quotas, boredom and difficulty expressing their creativity, bad responses and an erratic schedule.

Abstract

In case of recent global and social changes, academic fields under language and communication pay their interests in various forms of translation, for instance, official text. Translating official text very often meets a gap, that is, inappropriate meanings in the target text. Therefore, the aims of the study are to identify the stylistic approaches that contribute to the translation of the ST into the TT in terms of stylistic qualified translation and to identify the translation accepted by the native speakers of TT. Equivalence in meaning which is a central meaning-focused in the translation work has not been done well by the translator. The farther its equivalence is the farther the gap is. The gap, however, leads to a misunderstanding of the text. Misunderstanding of the text will either spoil the ideas or loosen the information of the source text. Word Formation Variation (WFV) 19 data (14.61 %), and Lexical Choice Variation (LCV) 28 data (21.53%).

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out if there any significant differences between the students are taught descriptive text writing by using WPA and those without. This study used experimental research design. The population of this study was all eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Simeulue Barat, and the total population was 32 students. The sample of this study was the students of classes VIIIA and VIIIB. There were divided into two groups: the experimental and control groups. This study also used non random sampling. The data was collected from pre-test and post-test. The t-test analysis technique in this study used the SPSS 18 for windows. The mean of this study of post-test of the experimental group is 74.37, while the control group is 58.12. The writer obtained the results of in the t-count = 4.42, while t-table =2.05. So, the provisions in the different test if the t-count is higher than t-table then difference is real and the alternative hyhothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, in this study there was a significant difference in the achievement of writing descriptive text by using WPA. The use of WPA in teaching writing descriptive text is effective to be applied in the context at SMP Negeri 1 Simeulue Barat. Finally, the researchers suggest to teachers that students should use WPA in teaching descriptive text.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to analyze and to identify the forms of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary of speech acts in “Rembulan dalam Cappuccino” short story by Seno Gumira Ajidarma. The locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary of speech acts are the scope of Pragmatics where we know, one of the fields of linguistics that studies language along with its context is also called pragmatics. Basically, pragmatics is a scientific study that studies how a language is used in communication. In contrast to linguistics which studies and discusses the structure of language internally, pragmatic studies examine the meanings of external lingual units. The approach used in this research is qualitative approach with a pragmatic study. Then, the research method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The data and data sources used in this study is “Rembulan dalam Cappuccino” short story by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, and other sources such as books, articles, journals, and previous research that related to the locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary of speech acts study. The data collection technique that writer used is library research, with data analysis technique in the form of identifying and classifying data, analyzing and presenting data, and conclusion or verification. The result showed that there were 15 dialogues that contain types of locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary of speech acts from a total of 25 dialogues in that short story. As many as 13 dialogues that containing the type of locutionary, 15 dialogues that containing the types of illocutionary, and 1 dialogue which is a type of perlocutionary of speech acts.

Abstract

Teachers’ questions play vipotal role in facilitating language learning by which the teachers often ask students to practice vocabulary, grammatical rules, or some expressions in the target language. Hence, this paper addresses types of questions explored by English lecturers in teaching speaking to English department students of UIN Ar-raniry Banda Aceh and investigate the most common type ocuured during the lesson. The data was collected through a recorded teaching session of Speaking class which then transcribed and analyzed by using Mile’s and Huberman’s (1992) model of data analysis consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The analysis revealed that the lecturer employed both display and refential questions to invite students’ speaking and engagement in the classroom. Further, referential questions is the the most frequent type of questions that occured in the classroom during the teaching and learning process. This study suggests that more referential questions can be maximized in language class to promote students’ speaking proficeincy and active learning.
