Abstract

English has been well-known as the global language since the last three decades. English is not only as a mean of international communication but as a tool to gain and exchange information as well. Therefore, English becomes the language taught the most in school. Learning language cannot be separated from language skills. Mastering 4 skills of language is important to be acknowledge as Language master. However, many students have difficulties in mastering the language skills, speaking especially. This condition may occur because of different reasons. The result of preliminary study showed that the students of XI MIPA 5 at SMA Negeri 4 Malang had lower score in speaking compared to other language skills. It was because they got difficulty in developing idea of what to say which then made them having no confidence in speaking. Moreover, they were also afraid of making mistake. Therefore, this Action Research was employed as the research design to improve the students’ ability in speaking. The subjects of this study were students of XI MIPA 5 science class which consists of 33 students. The research findings showed that the use of picture cards has progressively improved the students’ speaking ability proven by the improvement of their speaking score. There were 87.87% students could improve their score by at least 5 points. Using picture cards as teaching media helped the students to have a betterment of speaking skill. The result of the observation checklist and field note showed that using picture cards media in teaching cause and effect made students easier in understanding the material which then it helps them easier in doing the speaking performance.

Abstract

The research aimed at the use of picture series to improve the students’ speaking ability of tenth graders in narrative text. In accordance with the findings of preliminary study which showed that the students’ speaking performance was low, the researcher chose speaking as the focus skill to be improved. The skill was chosen because the students faced many difficulties to perform this skill, such as the lack of vocabulary, the coherence in speaking, and the difficulty to express the ideas. The study applied a classroom action research that was conducted in two cycles consisting of five meetings. The subject of this research was 34 tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Malang. The findings of the research revealed that using picture series improved the students’ speaking score in some aspects of speaking skills, comprising fluency, pronunciation, content, and coherence. Besides, it could make the student eager to be involved in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes in tertiary level puts its importance to Need Analysis (NA) process for syllabus design. This present research is concerned with designing ESP syllabus for Mechanical Engineering students in tertiary level through need analysis. The research aims to identify the immediate needs of the Mechanical Engineering students and design appropriated syllabus based on students’ needs using Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and Present Situation Analysis (PSA). In order to achieve the research’s objectives, a questionnaire was administered to a total 50 respondents. The finding of the research shows that among 4 basic English skills, listening skill emerged as the most important skill that students’ really need, followed by speaking, reading, and writing. Thus, this research suggests that ESP teachers should design more varied activities on listening course that students will have the competence to apply the skills later in future life context.

Abstract

Researchers made observations during the writing class. There were several writing problems faced by students, including: spelling errors in writing a few words, difficulty in compiling ideas, grammatical errors, incorrect punctuation, and inaccurate diction used. The researcher then found a solution to that problem by using the track changes feature in the pair correction activity. Track changes was useful for correcting students' writing in the editing phase not only making corrections, students also worked together in groups in pairs to produce better writing. The study used a classroom action research that aimed to describe the implementation of the use of track changes in pair correction activities and to find out whether the strategy could improve students' writing skills. The subjects of this study were students in class XI IPA 1 with a total of 32 students. The procedures in this study included planning, action, observation, and reflection. Researchers collected data through pre-test, post-test, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher used two cycles in this research. The results of the pre-test action showed that the average grade of the class was 67, after implementing the strategy, the average class in the first post test was 79 and in the second post-test it was 81. Based on these results, the use of track changes in writing correction in pairs could improve students' writing skills. The data were also supported by the results of questionnaires and interviews obtained that track changes helped students in learning to write.

Abstract

Corrective feedback is often intended to draw learners' attention to repair linguistic forms when performing communicative activities. While researchers argue that feedback plays a role in L2 development, some teachers doubt what type of feedback is suitable for certain errors. Another issue is whether or not the given feedback is incorporated or responded by the learners. This current study focuses on two corrective feedback, namely recast and elicitation. It aims to identify which feedback elicits more uptakes from the learners. Besides, since uptakes may come in different forms, the study investigates the types of uptakes generated by learners in response to the given feedback. By involving EFL learners in a communicative task and analysing the feedback and uptake that appeared during the task, it was found that recast has elicited more uptake than elicitation. The uptake yielded includes repetition, acknowledgment, and incorporation, with repetition showing the highest frequency.

Abstract

Politician will use various style of political languages to influence and convince people to achieve a victory in campaign. Indonesia has conducted debate as a form of campaign in the presidential election. Therefore, violating the cooperative principle in political language often occurs. The researcher conducts this research to know how does the President and Vice President candidates violate cooperative principle, especially in quality and relevance maxim, to know what is the function of the violation, and to know what is the meaning of violation. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subject of this research is the dialogue of President and Vice President candidate in debate. The object of this research is violation of maxim quality and relevance. The instrument of this research is the table indicator. The data obtained from the utterances of President and Vice President candidate. the researcher analyzed the data by using literature study, document study, and content analysis. Then, the validity of data used triangulation method. The result of this study is the President and Vice President candidate number 01 violated maxim relevance and maxim quality. The function of violation are; commisive and assertive. The meaning of the utterances is promising and giving an opinion. Then, the candidate number 02 violated maxim quality with assertive function. The meaning of the utterances is boasting.
