Abstract

Colleen Hoover's novel entitled Regretting You was first published in 2019. The novel reflects the intricate layers of human relationships of self-discovery, forgiveness, and lifelong family connections. Morgan and her teenage daughter, Clara, is dealing with the tragic deaths of Morgan's husband and Clara's father. As they deal with their grief and try to rebuild their lives, secrets and misunderstandings emerge, straining their relationship and causing them to experience dysthymia. Dysthymia is a lifelong form of depression, according to Michael E. Thase and Susan S. Lang. Then, how the symptoms of dysthymia depicted by Morgan and Clara in Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You? Employing a qualitative research approach, the researchers explore the symptoms of dysthymia, including changes in feeling, thinking, and behavior. Morgan and Clara's dysthymia evolves as they navigate the conflicts in the story, mainly due to the grief resulting from their loss. As a result, their mental and emotional health suffers greatly. This leads to the conclusion that their dysthymia exacerbates the tension in their mother-daughter relationship, making it difficult for them to communicate effectively and solve problems, all due to their enduring mild depression.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the motives and attitudes of students towards code switching. This study employed a qualitative phenomenology research design. According to the findings, the students revealed that they encountered different challenges in terms of their teaching and learning especially in speaking correctly without any error because of the rules and other things they must follow as well as to consider during the making of sentences. The speaking skill of the students will never be as constant because language is not only dynamic but also code-switching can be more expressive and active to express themselves and share their thoughts much easier. Furthermore, code-switching alternates between the speakers’ native language and the second language which they aim to acquire. It is said that English should be used to increase the input and output of the target language and that the L1 should be avoided. Therefore, nowadays, people are bilinguals and they spoke language to which they are comfortable. Data suggest that codeswitching can help with language fluency by keeping both languages active and accessible, and therefore providing an alternative means of communicating meaning.

Abstract

This paper investigates the realities of literature adaptation to film in today’s world of literary criticism. People enjoy motion pictures and compare them with its original textual Literature. By focusing on literary criticism theories, this article explains modern to postmodern aesthetic points, especially in the era of definitions in romanticism, reflectionism and its auto, empiricism until pragmatism, and the age of language beyond communication. Through those former points, the adaptation of Literature to film brings in a wider point: the world itself. The adaptation is shown to broaden concepts and interpretations among writers, directors, and also audiences. Every aspect is so active to interpret in today's crisscrossed world that meanings vary from critical and evaluation perspectives. The adaptation is not about merely fixed definitions or even market orientations but open meanings on dialogues among realities. Any measurement from Literature or film is never enough to compare adaptation to its original form since it is located between individualities and societies. In conclusion, the adaptation of Literature should indicate that dominations must be minimized by maximizing hospitality of differences.

Abstract

This qualitative corpus-based study employing epistemic analysis uncovered the epistemic modality (EM) markers used and their communicative functions in the seven inaugural speeches of the seven Philippine 5th Republic presidents. The findings revealed the preponderant use of epistemic modal verbs with 152 occurrences (81.72%), followed by epistemic lexical verbs with 20 occurrences (10.75%), epistemic modal adverbs with 9 occurrences (4.84%), and epistemic modal adjectives with 5 occurrences (2.69%). Moreover, the top-five modal verbs operated in the presidential inaugurals are will with 97 instances (66.9%), can with 28 instances (19.31%), shall with 9 instances (6.21%), would with 6 instances (4.14%), and could with 5 instances (3.44%). Meanwhile, should and might were never used by any president. In this regard, the presidents are confident, committed, bold, and certain with their statements; some are tentative and quite confident but still communicatively sensitive and polite; and few are uncertain but still diplomatic. Further, the communicative functions of the EM markers were categorized to high-intermediate-low modality values, certain-probable-possible semantic meanings, and close-near-distant epistemic distances.

Abstract

This qualitative corpus-based study aimed to identify the elements in semantic as well as analyze the relationship between an entity and its neighboring non-entity text found in disaster announcements and signages in Davao City. The study utilized social media and public signages as means of collecting data wherein disaster announcements and signages related to flood, fire, and earthquake are being focused. To analyze the data, the researchers used two parts of the process of semantic analysis namely Lexical Semantic Analysis focusing on elements in semantic and Relationship Extraction centralizing on entities and relations. The results exhibit that in those announcements and signages six (6) elements in semantics were commonly found namely Homonyms, Hypernyms, Hyponyms, Polysemy, Synonymy, and Antonymy in which each conveys different lexical meanings that affects the meaning of a sentence. Furthermore, a category of relations was found in the extraction process of the entity and non-entity text which are Description, Causation, Mitigation, Preparedness, and Response. These categories helped explain how each relationship formed with an entity can provide different meaning and different context. All things considered, copywriters of public service announcements for disaster announcements and signages should take note of the word choice and their arrangement and linkage when writing so as to have a better communication and understanding with the citizens to avoid vulnerability with risks.
