The journal is published by Pusat Unggulan Riset Pengembangan Lahan Suboptimal (PUR-PLSO), Universitas Sriwijaya. The journal was first published on April of 2012 with twice per year in frequency on April and October.

Abstract

One of the palm oil derivative products that has the potential to grow in southern Tapanuli was the processing of sap or brown sugar which has been produced by palm trees through rural industrialization using palm sugar processing technology. In developing palm oil farming in South Tapanuli, it was important to prepare institutions through science and technology with structural equation models. The objective of this research was to develop an agro-industry development strategy to improve the institution of palm trees. This research was observation respondents totaling 112 brown sugar producers. The result was to produce a statement through the perceptions of sugar palm farmers in Tapanuli, that sugar palm farmers in Tapanuli support the role of women in managing palm agro-industry institutions and agree that women will be able to take a role in resolving conflicts in sugar palm agro-industry institutions. Sugar palm farmers in Tapsel agree that there will be many differences of opinion from people who will manage the sugar palm agro-industry and differences of opinion will affect the existence of the sugar palm agro-industry in Tapanuli Selatan.

Abstract

One of the suboptimal land resources is shrimp and coconut. Increasing productivity on suboptimal land is essential by utilizing typical land. A concern arises with the use of waste as a preservative. The necessity to replace preservatives made from chemical raw materials with natural alternatives is evident. The research aimed to determine and optimize the antioxidant properties of chitosan combined with liquid smoke from coconut shells (Cocos nucifera) as a natural food preservative. The study utilized a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments repeated three times. The treatments consisted of different concentrations. The results indicated that varying concentrations of Cocos nucifera liquid smoke combined with sterilized glucose and chitosan had a significant effect on antioxidant analysis and the Maillard reaction. Higher concentrations of liquid smoke resulted in increased browning, likely due to the Maillard reaction occurring when glucose and chitosan were mixed with liquid smoke and then sterilized using an autoclave. This condition was expected to be favorable as it involves a reaction between free amino acids in chitosan and reducing sugar compounds from glucose. Additionally, aldehyde ketone compounds are found in Cocos nucifera coconut shell liquid smoke. Finally, the optimal concentration for antioxidant activity was treatment A2 (total concentration of 1% chitosan + 1% glucose + 3% coconut shell liquid smoke) with an IC50 value of 6.69% and a brown absorbance of 0.45%.

Abstract

Recent studies have explored various adsorbent materials that are low-cost, available in quantity, and effective for heavy metal removal, one of them is the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) sludge. The study aimed to investigate the potential of recycling Water Treatment Plant sludge into an adsorbent for Cu (II) removal. The sludge adsorbent was carbonized by using a furnace at 600°C for 2 hours. This study was conducted in batch. The adsorbent effectiveness was analyzed by varying the dosage, contact time, and activation of the sludge adsorbent on Cu (II) removal. The adsorption isotherm was analyzed using the Langmuir and Ferundlich models, and the kinetic study used pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order model. The results showed the removal efficiency of Cu (II) for both activated and non-activated sludge adsorbents reached 98.6–99.9%. The addition of dosage did not affect the increase in Cu (II) adsorption capacity. Activation of the adsorbent increased the adsorption capacity of Cu (II) with the equilibrium time at 60–90 min, shorter than the non-activated adsorbent at 90–120 min. The adsorption isotherm model for both adsorbent types fitted well to the Langmuir model, indicating the adsorption process occurs in a single layer on a homogeneous surface. The adsorption kinetics followed pseudo-second-order with a high correlation coefficient. Water treatment sludge, an industrial by-product, has the potential to be an effective and low-cost adsorbent material for Cu removal.

Abstract

Suboptimal rice productivity in the swamp was due to both drought stress and submergence stress during the lifetime of the rice, and swamp rice could only be planted once a year. One of the efforts to increase the productivity of swamp rice was to develop rice varieties that can tolerate drought stress and submergence stress. The study aimed to validate the success of the F1 cross and to develop rice varieties exhibiting dual tolerance through backcrossing. Data analysis utilized Analysis of Variance followed by 5% test. The planting method uses a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Observed variables included plant height, number of tillers per clump, number of panicles per clump, number of grains per panicle, number of grains per clump, weight of grain per panicle, dry weight of harvested grain, dry weight of grain, weight of 1000 grains, percentage of empty grains, flowering age, and harvesting age. Evaluations of growth characteristics revealed no significant differences in genetic traits and characteristics between the crossed rice and the parental lines. Flowering age and harvesting age of rice Inpago 12 elders were faster than Inpara 8 elders. Plant height of Inpago 12 elders was higher than Inpara 8 elders. This was due to differences in genetic traits and characters between varieties, and finally it was concluded that F1 accessions were successfully crossed and did not single-cross.

Abstract

The riparian wetland offers potential for horticultural crop cultivation, such as chili peppers. It is important to consider cultivation techniques and the use of organic matter to improve soil properties, particularly to combat waterlogging during the rainy season. This study aimed to assess the impact of biochar application on the growth of chili peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) during the vegetative stage under waterlogging conditions. This research was conducted at the experimental land of the Agrotechnology Department, Faculty of Plant and Animal Sciences, Universitas Bina Insan from December 2022 to February 2023. This research employed a complete randomized design (RAL) factorial with two factors. The first factor involved waterlogging stress, including control (C) and waterlogging stress (W). The second factor (N) encompassed the application of biochar, namely without biochar (N0), rice husk biochar (N1) and coconut shell biochar (N2) at a dose of 200 g plant-1. The results showed that waterlogging conditions (W) and biochar application (N) showed significantly different results in shoot length, root length, number of leaves, and total dry weight of chili plants, while the interaction (WxN) showed significantly different in shoot length and root length of plants. Treatment without biochar (N0) in waterlogging conditions actually showed shoot length, root length, number of leaves and total dry weight of plants that were significantly higher than treatment coconut shell biochar (N1) and rice husk applications (N2).

Abstract

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was a leafy vegetable that has high economic value in Indonesia and provides health benefits to consumers. The use of organic fertilizers is deemed more optimal than inorganic fertilisers due to the potential of inorganic fertilizers to cause soil damage and environmental pollution through chemical residues and land productivity reduction. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of using NASA liquid organic fertilizer and cow manure on the growth and yield of lettuce plants. The study used a Randomised Block Factorial Design with two factors: cow manure with four treatment levels and NASA liquid organic fertiliser with three treatment levels. The results showed that chicken manure had a significant effect on plant height, leaf area, leaf dry weight, and stem fresh weight at 28 days after planting (DAT), while NASA liquid organic fertilizer had no significant effect on all parameters except plant height at 7 DAT. Higher doses of chicken manure (S2 and S3) contributed to the increase in dry weight and fresh weight of leaves. Application of NASA liquid organic fertilizer at a dose of 4 ml/L (N2) showed a better response in supporting plant vigor than others. In addition, the highest plant fresh weight was obtained in the combination of S3 and N2 treatments, indicating a synergistic effect between the two types of organic fertilizers. High a dose of chicken manure (S3 = 900 g) can negatively affect growth by lowering soil pH and causing too acidic conditions that are not optimal for plants.

Abstract

Natural peat forms from partially decomposed plant remains, at least 50 cm thick, accumulating in swamps over alluvial subsoil. The research aimed to identify peat maturity, peat depth and color of mineral soil. Additionally, to identify some soil chemical properties such as soil pH, N-total, C-organic and P-available under the peat layer in Siwijaya Botanical Garden. This study used a detailed survey method at a scale of 1:8,000 on peatland areas in Sriwijaya Botanical Garden covering 77 ha.  Sampling was conducted using the systematic sampling method. The analysis of soil chemical properties was conducted in the laboratory. The study results showed that the thickness of the peat at the study location was dominantly very deep with a peat depth of >300 cm, the color of the mineral soil in the peat layer was predominantly gray and very dark gray, the pH value of the soil was very acidic with a value of <4.5, the C-Organic value was categorized as average to very high, the N-Total value was categorized as very low to average and the P-Available value was categorized as very low to low. Peat depths of more than 300 cm should be planted with conservation crops and further research needs to be done on the relationship between the chemical properties of the mineral soil under peat layers and the chemical properties of the peat soil.

Abstract

Red chili was one of the most strategic vegetable commodities because the market demand was high every day. Efforts to increase chili productivity were needed so that chili prices were stable and market demand was met. The research aimed to determine the growth and yield of the red chili Gada F1 variety against NPK 16:16:16 fertilizer. This research uses the Randomized Block Design (RBD) method, consisting of 4 treatment levels and 3 replications. P0 = control, P1 = NPK fertilizer 2.5 g/polybag, P2 = NPK fertilizer 5 g/polybag, and P3 = NPK fertilizer 7.5 g/polybag. The application of NPK 16:16:16 fertilizer to the growing medium significantly influenced several growth and yield parameters, including the number of leaves, crown diameter, leaf greenness, fruit weight, number of fruits, fruit length, and fruit diameter. In contrast, it had no statistically significant effect on plant height, flowering time, number of branches, root fresh weight, crown fresh weight, root dry weight, or crown dry weight. Among the treatments, the application rate of 7.5 g/polybag (P3) yielded the most favorable results across the majority of measured parameters. Accordingly, an NPK 16:16:16 dosage of 7.5 g/polybag was recommended for the cultivation of the red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) variety Gada F1.

Abstract

Soil erodibility was the ease with which soil erodes. The study aimed to determine the value of soil erodibility on rubber, oil palm, and teak land at PT Waimusi agroindah. The method used was a very detailed survey, assisted by digital maps. Soil samples were taken based on the study area. Soil samples were taken at 0–30 cm deep and topsoil for soil permeability analysis as well as the completeness of the tools and materials needed. The calculation of the value of soil erodibility on rubber, oil palm, and teak land has moderate criteria. The equation of these criteria in quantitative numbers for oil palm land has a value of 0.18, which was higher than rubber land at 0.15 and teak land at 0.13. While on forest land, the soil erodibility value was 0.04, so it falls into very low criteria. The conclusion of this research was that rubber, oil palm, and teak land obtained soil erosion sensitivity values with moderate criteria, and the results of soil erosion sensitivity values on forest land were classified as very low. This research was one of a series of several factors used to determine the potential for land erosion. Further research needs to be done so that the potential for erosion could be determined from all the factors that affect the potential for erosion.

Abstract

The development of tidal land as agricultural land is one opportunity to meet food needs. The study aimed to determine the contribution of superior varieties in increasing tidal rice productivity in South Sumatra. The research was conducted in Banyuasin Regency in 2021 using survey and interview methods. The number of sub-districts where sampling was taken was 9 sub-districts which are representative of low tide land. The data collected in this research were the results of harvested dry grain (tiles), the varieties used, the type and dose of fertilizer used, planting methods and cropping index. Apart from primary, secondary data was also collected  as supporting data in the form of land area for each region and climatic conditions. The data taken was tabulated and analyzed  descriptively. The research results show that the productivity level of superior rice varieties is higher than the district average productivity. Increasing productivity by applying superior varieties reaches 1.5 t/ha.
