Abstract

Objectives: To determine the effect of low impact aerobic exercise on functional balance and the quality of life in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patientsMethods: This is an experimental study. Participants were recruited from outpatient Diabetes Clinic in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia. Subjects of this study are men and women aged 30-70 years whose diagnosed with type 2 DM, with A1c less than 10%, have been using oral anti diabetic drug or subcutaneous insulin less than 30 IU daily, blood glucose level before exercise less than 250mg%, and Berg Balance Scale between 41-56. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups with 38 subjects in the exercise group and 37 in the control group. The exercise group followed 25-30 minutes diabeticaerobic low impact exercise 3 times a week for 3months, while the control group did not. Functional balance and quality of life before and after exercise were assessed using Berg Balance Scale (BBS) andthe Sickness Impact Profile (SIP) questionnaire. Difference in BBS and quality of life improvement measured by SIP questionnaire were analyzed after 3 months of exercise.Results: Mann Whitney test showed significant difference of the total score of BBS in the exercise group (p 0.02; α < 0.05). Chi Square test revealed significant improvement in four of the twelve parameters ofthe quality of life: sleep and rest (SR) (p 0.044), body care and movement (BCM) (p 0.017), ambulation (A) (p 0.001), and work (W) (p 0.000) in the exercise group.Conclusions: Low impact aerobic exercise in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients may improve functional balance and the SR, BCM, A, and W parameters of the quality of life.Key words: Low impact aerobic exercise, type 2 diabetic mellitus, functional balance, quality of life.

Abstract

Objectives: to develop a better design of ergonomic backpack and to evaluate the effect of wearing conventional and modified backpack on CVA and SSA changes.Methods: 34 male students of grade 5 and 6 elementary school who met the inclusion criteria (boys, 11-12 years old, normoweight, normoposture, and able to follow instruction) were included in theexperimental and cross sectional studies to evaluate duration, time of complaint, and changes in CVA and SSA between the conventional and modified backpack groups; and subject preference to backpackdesign. This study was statistically analysed through Mann-Whitneym Wilcoxon, and Mc Nemar tests.Results: The modified backpack with two compartments, hip strap, compartment strap and wide shoulder strap gives more benefits. Majority of students preferred the modified design to conventionaldesign. The modified design also gave students the ability to stand up longer. Narrowing CVA while wearing backpack was evident in conventional group (n=25) in comparison with modified group (n=15,p= 0.022). Moreover, narrowing SSA was also found more (n=18) in the conventional group than the modified group (n=4, p=0.000).Conclusions: Modified backpack design with two compartments, hip straps, wide shoulder straps, and compartment straps provides less CVA and SSA changes in comparison to conventional beckpackgroup. Minimal changes of CVA and SSA contributes to the development of a more ergonomic model of modified backpack to maintain postural stability.Key Words: posture, craniovertebral angle, backpack, ergonomics.

Abstract

Objectives: To find hamstring muscle flexibility among KONI Propinsi DKI Jakarta’s volleyball players,based on age, sex and playing position particularly.Methods: A cross sectional study performed in 25 female and 24 male athletes using Sit and Reach Test (SRT) box had done 3 times trial with the best score was recorded.Results: Hamstring muscle’s mean value score was 18.21 (SD 6.5) cm, male athletes was 17.6 (SD 6.5) cm, female athletes was 18.8 (SD 6.6) cm, middle adolescence 14-16 years old was 15.55 (SD 6.1) cm,late adolescence 17-20 years old was 19.91 (SD 6.9) cm, young adulthood 21-24 years old was 18.79 (SD 4.6) cm, hitter was 18.8 (SD 6.6) cm, center was 15.5 (SD 6.3) while allround players was 20.4 (SD5.9).Conclusions: Average value of hamstring flexibility among volleyball athletes of KONI DKI Jakarta based on SRT was 18.21 ± 6.5 cm, particularly within middle adolescence (14-16 years old) was 15.55± 6.1 cm, late adolescence (17-20 years old) was 19.91 ± 6.9 cm, and young adulthood (21-24 year old) was 18.79 ± 4.6 cm. While by sex was 17.6 ± 6.5 cm among male and 18.8 ± 6.6 cm among female.Based on playing position, hitters were 18.8 ± 6.6, setters were 15.5 ± 6.3 and all-round player were 20.4 ± 5.9 cm.Keywords: Flexibility, Hamstring muscle, SRT
