Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study aims to analyze the impact of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the development of students’ responsibility character in Chemistry education, with a specific focus on the challenging topic of atomic structure among 11th-grade high school students. Amid increasing concerns about character education in STEM subjects, this study seeks to fill the gap by exploring how active learning models influence affective outcomes alongside cognitive achievement. Methodology: A mixed-methods explanatory design was employed, incorporating a quasi-experimental approach with pretest-posttest control groups. Quantitative data were collected through self-assessment questionnaires, peer evaluations, and teacher observation sheets, while qualitative insights were gathered via semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis of student reflections. The triangulation of data sources provided a comprehensive view of how PBL implementation affects student responsibility. Main Findings: The findings revealed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significant improvements in their responsibility character compared to the control group. Higher posttest scores reflected positive behavioral changes in engagement, discipline, and task accountability during Chemistry learning activities. Qualitative data further supported that PBL encouraged students to take ownership of their learning process, collaborate effectively, and complete tasks with greater autonomy and diligence. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers a novel perspective by applying PBL not only as a cognitive learning strategy but also as a tool for character development in complex Chemistry topics. It advances the understanding of integrative pedagogical models that simultaneously nurture academic proficiency and essential life skills, particularly responsibility, in secondary science education.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: Graduate profiles that do not match the needs of the world of work in a community environment based on local culture are one of the problems for prospective teachers. This research aims to analyze local culture-based community responses regarding the development of prospective teachers' skills. Methodology: This research used a mixed-method approach with primary data from questionnaires and secondary data from observations, interviews, and documentation. Main Findings: This study revealed that out of a sample of 100 students, 83.33% responded positively to the implementation of status changes. Additionally, 65% of the community acknowledged that the status change would lead to a greater variety of academic programs. Meanwhile, 9% of the community believed that this change would contribute to improved welfare, and 75.5% recognized its overall benefits. Insights from stakeholder interviews led to the recommendation of five study programs, while surveys of 11th and 12th-grade prospective students identified ten preferred study programs. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this research lies in its integration of local cultural perspectives into the needs analysis for developing study programs in Islamic universities. Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study investigates the relationship between students’ attitudes and their motivation to study physics in vocational high schools. Recognizing that physics is often perceived as a difficult subject, this research seeks to understand how affective factors influence student engagement and achievement, particularly in vocational education settings where applied sciences are critical. Methodology: The study employs a quantitative descriptive design with a correlational approach, using validated questionnaires distributed to vocational students. To enrich the quantitative findings, semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore students' perceptions more deeply based on specific indicators of attitude and motivation. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics, particularly Pearson correlation analysis. Main Findings: The results revealed that both students’ attitudes towards physics and their motivation to learn were generally in the “fairly good” category. A positive and significant correlation between the two variables was found, with a moderate Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.622, indicating that students with a more positive attitude tend to have higher motivation levels. This emphasizes the vital role of affective domains in supporting physics learning outcomes. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a novel integrated analytical framework that merges quantitative correlation data with qualitative insights, providing a deeper understanding of the synergy between attitudes and motivation. Unlike previous research that often examined these factors independently, this study emphasizes their interrelated impact on vocational physics education, offering new directions for designing affective-based learning interventions aimed at improving student cognitive, affective, and psychomotor performance in technical fields.

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: Islamic religious education (PAI) in Indonesia plays a pivotal role in nurturing the character, morality, and spirituality of the younger generation. Among the key institutions delivering PAI are Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), which integrate religious and general education within a unique cultural and educational framework. This study aims to critically analyze the implementation of the Islamic education curriculum in pesantren and to assess its impact on educational quality and relevance in a rapidly changing societal context. Methodology: Adopting a qualitative library research approach, this study systematically examines scholarly literature, policy documents, and prior research to explore curriculum practices in pesantren. The focus is on understanding both traditional and modern models of curriculum integration and the challenges faced in adapting Islamic education to contemporary educational standards. Main Findings: The study reveals that traditional pesantren, emphasizing classical religious sciences, often encounter difficulties integrating competency-based curriculum reforms demanded by modern education systems. Conversely, progressive pesantren that adopt competency-based frameworks exhibit significant improvements in educational quality, particularly in practical skills aligned with societal and workforce needs. However, the transition remains uneven and faces structural challenges. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers a novel perspective by highlighting the tension between maintaining religious authenticity and pursuing educational modernization in pesantren. It proposes a strategic model for curriculum transformation supported by government policy, teacher capacity building, and infrastructural enhancement. This study contributes to reimagining Islamic boarding schools as dynamic institutions capable of preserving religious values while equipping students for global challenges.

Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study aims to explore fourth-grade students’ understanding of mathematical concepts by examining two psychological and behavioral variables: mathematics anxiety and learning independence. Specifically, the study investigates how these two factors influence students’ abilities to comprehend and apply mathematical concepts in classroom learning. Addressing this issue is essential, as early mathematical understanding serves as a foundation for more complex problem-solving in later education. Methodology: This research employs a qualitative case study approach, with data collected through classroom observations, structured interviews with students and teachers, and analysis of related documents, including student worksheets, math test scores, and teacher reflections. The study utilizes a customized analytical framework based on a modified version of Bloom’s Taxonomy, allowing for a detailed exploration of cognitive understanding, emotional responses, and metacognitive strategies in relation to mathematical learning. Main Findings: Findings indicate that many fourth-grade students experience moderate to high levels of math anxiety, often rooted in negative prior experiences. This anxiety correlates with lower conceptual understanding and reduced classroom performance. Conversely, students who demonstrate high learning independence characterized by initiative, persistence, and self-regulation tend to show greater comprehension and confidence in learning mathematics, even in the face of challenging tasks. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in its integrative framework that connects emotional (anxiety), behavioral (independence), and cognitive (conceptual understanding) domains in elementary mathematics education. It also introduces a structured interview instrument designed specifically to uncover students’ internal learning experiences, providing deeper insight into early mathematical development.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze the relationship between academic writing culture and students' self-efficacy. Academic writing is a crucial skill in higher education, yet many students struggle to develop effective writing habits. Low interest, lack of academic support, and limited foundational writing skills are key factors affecting the students' self-efficacy in performing academic tasks. Methodology: This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational method. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 26 students who were actively engaged in academic writing. Data were collected through a Likert-scale closed questionnaire and analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between academic writing culture and self-efficacy. Main Findings: The results indicate a very strong relationship between academic writing culture and students' self-efficacy, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.994. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 98.8% demonstrates that academic writing culture makes a significant contribution to improving students' self-efficacy, while other factors influence 1.2%. This finding suggests that fostering a strong academic writing culture enhances students' confidence in facing academic challenges. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study provides novel insights by highlighting the essential role of academic writing culture as a dominant factor influencing students' self-efficacy. While previous research has examined writing difficulties and self-efficacy separately, this study establishes a direct and strong correlation between them. The findings underscore the importance of institutional support in promoting academic writing habits that boost students' confidence and academic success.
