Abstract

Ferns (Pteridophytes) are one of the sources of germ plasm that play an important role in forest ecosystem and in human’s life as well. However, due to forest conversion, ferns gradually decrease in number especially the terrestrial species. This study aims to identify all terrestrial ferns found in the forest area of Tauk Village, Air Besar District, Landak Regency. The study applied Cruise Method and lasted for four months period of time, started from March to June 2014. The findings from the inventory, there are 18 species of terrestrial ferns found in the area and identified as members of class Polypodiopsida and 13 families of ferns. Most of the species of ferns found in the area come from the family of Lygodiaceae, whereas the species with the least number come from the families of Aspleniaceae, Gleicheniacea, Nephrolepidaceae, Thelypteridaceae, Lindsaeaceae, Tectariaceae, Davalliaceae, Lycopodiaceae, and Dennstaedtiaceae.

Abstract

The increase in the vaselife is one of the important factors to improve the quality of cut flowers of orchid Vanda douglas one of which is by giving a growth substance. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of BAP and to find the concentration to reduce decrease of vase life and withered petals as well as maintaining the period of vase life. This research was conducted in the Biology Laboratory of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Tanjungpura University, Pontianak in May 2014. The research methods used was the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 6 BAP concentration treatments, i.e. aquades control of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 ppm respectively. The results showed that the giving BAP of 20 ppm could slow down the decrease of vase life in cut flowers by 35,31%, the number of withered petals by 40% and retained the period of vase life of cut flowers up to 12,33 days.

Abstract

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn) is an aquatic plant that contains various kinds of phytocemical compounds, one of which is quercetin that has the potentiality to suppress inflammation. The arm of this research was to observe the anti-inflamation effect of Lotus infused water on kidneys mikroanatomical structure of mice (Mus musculus). The test subjects used in this research were 2 months old male swiss strain mice. This research utilized the completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replication each. The treatments groups were the given Lotus infused water orally consist of 5,6 mg/g BW, 8,4 mg/g BW and 11,2 mg/g BW dosages for 7 days, the normal control groups and the negatif control groups. Kidney microanatomical preparations were made using paraffin method with HE coloring. The result of this research show this research shows that stressing the mice may affect their kidneys microanatomical structure in forms of cell swelling (edema), hidropic degenerations, necrosis, and atrophy. The consumtions of Lotus infused water can suppress the inflammation on kidneys mikroanatomical structure of mice. The changes on kidneys tubulus and glomerolus of mice may start to be visible on the consumtion of 5,6 mg/g BW dosage of infused water.

Abstract

Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are pathogenic bacteria that can cause intestinal and skin infections. One of the potential medicinal plants that is active against bacteria is basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum). This research aims to examine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts of basil leaves againstthe growth of E. coli and S. aureus. The Research was conducted from September to December 2014. The ethanol extracts of basil leaves in this study used a concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, and Thiamfenicol as a positive control. The antibacterial activity test to observe inhibition zone was done through the disc diffusion method. The results showed that the extracts of basil leaves were bacteriostatic. In this research, the highest inhibition zone occurred at a concentrations of 100%, while the optimum treatment in inhibiting the growth of E. coli and S. aureus was the concentration of 80%. Based on results of the phytochemical test, the ethanol extract of O. sanctum had a secondary metabolite compounds i.e. flavonoid, tannin, and essential oil that act as antibacterial. The Anova statistical results showed a significant difference in the diameters of the inhibition zone of the treatment of extracts with positive control.
