Abstract

Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) function as repellent and anti feedant. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of usingsoursop leaves a botanical insecticide to control termites. This research was carried out in two laboratories in Tanjungpura University, Biology Laboratory, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Wood Technology Laboratory, Faculty of Forestry from Februari 2013 to May 2013. This Research utilised two factor, factorial design with completely randomized design (CRD).The first factor is the weight of soursop leaves ( 0 g, 2 g, 4 gand 6 g). The second is the types of bait media such as sawdust, filter paper, and ground termite nest. Each treatment was done three times to eventually achive thirty six experimental units. Subterranean termites highest morality is found in the combination of 6 grams of soursoup leaf powder 6 g with 10 g filter paper as the bait medium. The average morality of this termite is 99.33 %. On the other hand, the treatment resulted in the lowest weight lost of bait media is the combination of 4 grams of soursoup leaf powder with 10 grams of sawdust, losing averagely 9.99% of bait media weight.

Abstract

Tofu is one of the most popular food in Indonesian society. Tofu has a relatively short period of storage ranging from 1-2 days to be consumed, so it takes process of preservation in order to extend its storage life. One of the natural materials that could potentially serve as a natural preservative is the Piper betle leafand the noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia). This research aims to determine the concentration of each effective extract, the total number of bacterial colony and the organoleptic test results. The research was conducted from May until September 2014. It was an experimental design using the Completely Randomized Design. The concentrations of the extract used were 0%, 3%, 6% and 9% for each extract of Piper betle leaf and noni fruit. The results showed that the effective treatments in slowing down the process of decay were the Piper betle leaf extract (9%) and noni fruit extract (3%) with an average Total Plate Count (TPC)8.23x1010CFU/g dan 6.7x1010 CFU/g. Both extracts were able to maintain the storage life of tofu in room temperature for 3 days. The Piper betle leaf extract (9%) and noni fruit extract (3%) had a high value in the organoleptic parameter (aroma, texture, color and taste).

Abstract

The most commonly found disease causing microorganisms are the Staphylococcus epidermidis and Salmonella tyhpi bacteria. These bacteria can be controlled by using natural antibacterial ingredients, one of which is the fruit of ketapang (T. catappa). This research aimed to find out the antibacterial intensity of methanol extract of the T. catappa fruit in inhibiting the growth of S. epidermidis and S. typhi. This research used the disc diffusion method. The extract was given treatments with 25%, 50% and 75%, both positive and negative control treatments. Each treatment was inoculated with a bacterial suspension, and then the filter paper that had been soaked in the extract was aseptically placed on the surface of the media, incubated with a temperature of 370C for 24 and 48 hours, then the area of clear zone around the filter paper was observed and meassured. The research findings showed that the fruit of T. catappa had an inhibitory effect against both bacteria tested. The extract of the fruit of T. catappa at the concentration of 50% was found to be the optimum concentration for inhibiting S. epidermidis and S. typhi.

Abstract

Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus are pathogenic bacteria that can cause intestinal and skin infections. One of the potential medicinal plants that is active against bacteria is basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum). This research aims to examine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts of basil leaves againstthe growth of E. coli and S. aureus. The Research was conducted from September to December 2014. The ethanol extracts of basil leaves in this study used a concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, and Thiamfenicol as a positive control. The antibacterial activity test to observe inhibition zone was done through the disc diffusion method. The results showed that the extracts of basil leaves were bacteriostatic. In this research, the highest inhibition zone occurred at a concentrations of 100%, while the optimum treatment in inhibiting the growth of E. coli and S. aureus was the concentration of 80%. Based on results of the phytochemical test, the ethanol extract of O. sanctum had a secondary metabolite compounds i.e. flavonoid, tannin, and essential oil that act as antibacterial. The Anova statistical results showed a significant difference in the diameters of the inhibition zone of the treatment of extracts with positive control.
