Abstract

Phytoremediation is a remediation method by using plants with high tolerance to improve the quality of soil contamined with heavy metals. This research aimed to find out the effect of Hg metals on the growth of the wedelia (Wedelia trilobata L. Hitch) and to find out the ability of absorbing the mercury in the leaves and roots. The research used a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replicated, i.e. 0 ppm HgCl2, 100 ppm HgCl2, 200 ppm HgCl2, 300 ppm HgCl2 and 400 ppm HgCl2. The research finding indicated that the mercury treatment had no significant effect on the parameters of plant height, number of leaves, fresh weight and dry weight. The mercury concentration absorbed by the roots ranged from 0.1128 to 0.2997 mg/g,and by the leaves ranged from0.0221 to 0.0287 mg/g. The wedelia was tolerance and still capable of adapting to mercury at a concentration of mercury at 400 ppm.

Abstract

Industrial activities should produce waste and if it is discharge into waters continually can be resulted in changes to water quality. One of the wastes generated from industrial activities that affect the quality of the aquatic environment is Zinc (Zn). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Zinc (Zn) on the number of erythrocytes, leucocytes, hemoglobin levels and erythrocyte morphological damage in goldfish (Cyprinus carpio). Impact test was carried out by using 54 goldfishes Cyprinus carpio. It was accomplished in 3 different groups of treatment and repeated 3 times. Then, a blood sample from each treatment group of goldfish was taken. The result showed that the number of erythrocytes decreased by 69.2%. The number of erythrocytes after exposure was 0.5 x 106 cells/mm3. While the amount of leucocytes increased by 63.59%. The number of leucocytes was 0.235 x 106 cells/mm3. Hemoglobin levels were unchanged. Zinc (Zn) accumulation in blood achieved its highest level of 1.96 mg/l with the accumulation rate of 196%. The erythrocytes morphological damage was spherocytes (18.44%) and seroid (80.5%). It occurred at a concentration of ZnSO4 1 ppm with exposure for 6 weeks.

Abstract

Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is one of the commodities witha high economic value. The production of the arabica coffee plant (C. arabica L.) is influenced by seed dormancy. This research aimed to find out the effect of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and gibberellin (GA3) in accelerating the dormancy breaking and germination of the seeds of arabica coffee (C. arabica L.). This research used a completely randomized design (CRD), which consisted of two factors. The first factor was the concentration of H2SO4consisting of 5 treatments, i.e. the concentration of 0% (A0), 5% (A1), 10% (A2), 15% (A3), and 20% (A4). The second factor was the concentration of 0 ppm GA3 0 ppm (B0), 20 ppm (B1), 40 ppm (B2), 60 ppm (B3), dan 80 ppm (B4). Each treatment was repeated 3 times, so 75 experimental units were obtained. Data were analyzed using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and a further test using the Duncan test. The research findings showed thatthe treatment of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) at concentration of 10% was the best concentration for accelerating the growth ofthe seed of arabica coffee (C. arabica L.) with a percentage of 57.18%. The combination of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) of 10% and gibberellin (GA3) of 40 ppm was the best concentration for the growth of germination of arabica coffee (C. arabica L.) with a percentage of 38%.

Abstract

The efforts that should be made to maintain the quality of fish is by using antimicrobial compounds, one of which is chitosan. The use of chitosan in this study was to determine the effect and optimum concentration of chitosan in maintaining the quality of mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) from the microbiological and organoleptic aspects. The study used a Completely Randomized Design (RAL) with 3 variations of chitosan concentration is 1%, 2% and 3% dissolved in 1% acetic acid. The control used was acetate 1% solution and distilled weter. Observations were made after the fish are kept for 24 hours with the observation parameters of Total Plate Count (TPC), organoleptic and the fish pH. Based on the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), the result showed that the administration of chitosan on mackerel did not significantly affect the value of TPC and organoleptic, but the increase in the total number of bacteria in mackerel was lower than without the provision of chitosan. Chitosan was also able to reduce the value of mackerel organoleptic lower than without the provision of chitosan. Mackerel stored for 24 hours at each treatment increased the pH 5 to 7, which shows that the fish has undergone a process of decomposition.
